The next holiday.....

Though not a 'calendar' holiday, some people celebrate madigras with a party or at least a dinner, masks optional. I was curious if any of you 'do a little something' and what does your celebration include? I was considering having a little get-together, but don't have a clue how to make it 'original', for lack of a better word. Maybe a little mask making?

I've also wondered how many people celebrate the Chinese new year, even though you may not be of the ethnic origin. I've always been intriqued and 'follow' the eastern animal signs akin to our western horoscope. What sort of celebration comes to mind?

St. Pat's day would probably be the next holiday, but not having an ounce of Irish blood running thru my veins, think it's a little silly to 'celebrate NOT being Irish. LOL ;o)

Oh my, I forgot the BIGGEST money making holiday next to Christmas! HOW could I forget Valentine's Day?

Could it be that there isn't a man in my life? Some things are soooo over-rated. LOL ;o)

the Dollar Tree has some of their Easter decor out already. I see they have those neat rugs again. I love them when they have them.

Usually between Valentines and Easter I put out my Fairies or Noah's Arks. Or maybe it's my birdhouses.

Nancyjean, I'm so glad you enjoyed our Forum's table albums enough to bookmark them. I try to add photos fairly often, the gals here always have such neat settings worth us not 'losing' in cyberspace. I hope you also checked out our albums for Holiday decorating. Last time I counted, we have over 1000 pictures saved for Inspiration and ideas. I'm always browsing looking at stuff, LOL. I keep telling everyone here these aren't "my" albums but belong to all of us here. And anyone who finds a photo they think should go in there, let me know. I don't snag pictures from blogs since I feel I should get permission to do that. But BHG has been a wonderful source, and google.com "images". Its been great fun setting up the albums for us to enjoy. (but I'm not telling anyone how much time I spend looking thru them! LOL. I love all the pretty pictures and ideas) hugs, Karen

oh yeah, I keep forgetting about St. Patricks Day. My family isn't Irish so I've never gotten into that holiday aside from wearing green. This year Easter comes in March so there wouldn't be much time between St. Pat and Easter anyway. I used to have the large flags but it was such a hassle getting out the ladder to hang them I finally gave up and swapped it for those small flags you hang horizontally from a black iron pole that goes into the ground. I love these little flags, I keep them together in the closet on one skirt hanger (with two plastic clips). So I always know where they are and it's easy to switch from one to the next. I started out with a couple and now I must have one for every month of the year. Who knows, I may even buy one for St Patty's on of these days since I can't seem to stop buying these flags! The neighbor's kid is too funny, he told me once, "lady haven't you got enough flags! Every time I ride past your house [on his skateboard] there's a different flag out!". What can I say, after all the holiday decorations are gone, the weather has turned cold and rainy, there's nothing better than a colorful flag to liven up dormant landscaping. :)

SD had like snapped back to her old self today!! playing with dd and just "normal' we didnt realise it was no school - we just know we wanted her home at 7 every visit except over nights - i mentioned noone realised it - i realised it once i told my mom how court went. BM text dh about 30 min that she just wants to be a good mom and we never want to see the good. DH told her she had the chance to agree to our attorneys offer but now its going to trial - if the judge doesnt like what he hears she could get even LESS time and we will be fighting to raise child support but if she wanted to work something out to let him know. She said she did - he told her that if she wants to agree to our attorneys terms that he will not fight for more child support. she agreed. so i emailed our attorney to see if we can get this in a court order and done with or what we need to do. if it goes throu then BM gets everyother weekend which means we get full weekends with sd too =) then every other tue. every other holiday and split christmas..

The soil gets better every year if you're amending it as you should....and the gardener gets better every year too. It all works together. : ) Here in OK the thing that throws the wrench into the works and gums it all up is the weather, because we never know when we are planting exactly what the weather is going to do for the next 6 or 8 months---it could be drought and no rain for 3 months or it could be flooding rains, 12" of rain in one day and 24" in one month. How in the heck can any gardener plan ahead and be prepared for all that? I stay out of feed stores during baby chick time or else I'll bring home chicks we do not need. They are too little, too cute, too fluffy and just too adorable to ignore. The last time we were in Atwood's they didn't have chicks in the stores yet, but I figured that for sanity's sake I need to stay out of Atwoods for the next couple of months, and TSC too. Rebecca, You probably are on track with your succession planting, but with snow peas/pole beans it might be a little tricky. I like to plant pole beans early---before the peas are done---because we get so hot here so early that my pole beans need to flower and set beans in May in case the heat is about to crank up too hot in June, which often happens here. If only the weather were perfectly predictable. My English iris, ornamental alliums, red hot poker and some daylilies (but not all) have been up for quite a while now---maybe a month? The daffodils were really late, and some of the daylilies aren't up yet, but I really think that is because of the lack of moisture. The recent rainfall should help with that. The autumn sages are leafing out, so I need to cut them back soon. Most of the reseeding herbs and flowers are no shows so far, but I saw the first couple of larkspur (sprouting in a pathway, naturally) a couple of days ago. I am thinking everything likely will just explode now that we had some rain. I hope Travis Meyer is right about Spring. I'm never going to be unhappy about an early Spring because I dislike Winter's cold so much. The incredibly, horrifically invasive pink evening primrose plants are popping up all over the front half-acre, and in the garden. I pull them out of the garden the minute I spot them. I am considering hitting the ones in the pasture with a herbicide. Yes I am! One plant gives you a million more and they invade everywhere. I got rid of them in the drought years of 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014...but they staged a remarkable comeback in 2015, 2016 and 2017's wetter weather. I cannot stand them. If you let them grow and reseed as they will, that's all you'll end up with in the end. I might keep them if they'd crowd out Johnson grass and bermuda grass---but they do not---they just happily coexist with it. Do you have any idea which parts of Fort Worth they're looking at? Maybe by direction, like North, South, East or West? The DFW metroplex has grown so very huge (7.23 million people) and Tarrant County's population so large (1.8 million I think and I am not sure how much of that is Fort Worth proper and how much is the suburbs that surround it) that it is hard to talk about parts of Fort Worth, as many people now buy homes in developments in the many suburbs that ring the city. Most people who move to the area try to choose a nice neighborhood that will be a decent commute to their work so that they don't spend an hour or two commuting each way each day. So, if you can tell me where their new place or places of employment are located, maybe I can point y'all in the direction of the great places nearby to live. And, I want them to be forewarned, it is a seller's market and homes are selling fast and at inflated rates, so if they want to buy, they need to pre-qualify to know their price limit and find a great real estate agent. Many of our friends who once lived in Fort Worth have fled to the outer, outer, outer suburbs as it all has become too urbanized for them in their former neighborhoods. Some have fled north almost to Denton, to north towards Denton and then west towards Decatur and the like. Others have fled very far south---farther south than Burleson and perhaps as far southeast as Mansfield. My niece tries to keep me up to date on what's what in terms of the neighborhoods and housing developments, and it shocks me when she mentions a neighborhood that was perfectly lovely and highly coveted when we left Fort Worth in 1999, and she tells me it has gone downhill and is now "ghetto". I guess nothing remains the way we remember it once was. If Saginaw and the area northwest of it are near their place of employment, there's tons and tons of new housing developments and new shopping centers going up there---for at least the last 10-15 years, and the growth is never-ending. It used to be Denton was considered a long drive from Fort Worth and too far to move to live, but now people tell me Denton isn't far enough away. I think much depends on whether they want to love in a highly developed neighborhood with lots of homes close together, etc., or if they want to move further out and had a half-acre or acre lot or even more. The weather was gorgeous here today. I trust it was gorgeous where y'all are as well. It was a little wet and muddy, but that won't last long. It actually was nice to see puddles for once. Of course, we had a fire. Remember how I told y'all that when rain falls in a bad fire year, it can make things worst? It sort of did that today. Some vehicle on I-35 had a tire that was coming apart and a piece of flaming hot tire landed in tall grass beside the road and set the grass and trees on fire. This occurred less than 12 hours after our rain stopped falling and it happened maybe a half-mile from our fire station. I was wondering if the ground was muddy enough for the brush fire trucks to get stuck, and suspected it probably was. The answer, apparently, was yes, and I learned that when one firefighter was yelling "stop, stop, back up, back up, you're gonna get stuck" to the fire truck behind him. Sitting at home listening to him holler made me grin---not because I wanted for anyone to get stuck, but because it is just so predictable. So, now that we have had rain, the fires will continue on because dry, dormant vegetation reminds dry and dormant, and the fires will be harder to fight off-road because of the mud. As my son would mutter sarcastically "Great, just great." One thing that was odd(in a good way) today was that it was so warm that the songbirds did not have to spend every minute of every day eating nonstop in order to stay fueled up and warm. I didn't have to refill the bird feeders until almost sunset. The stores near us still have all the typical cool-season transplants on the shelves, but also more herbs that I think of as needing slightly warmer weather...and quite a few tomato plants. This was the first week I saw tomato plants, and I won't remember all the different varieties I saw, but among them were Early Girl, Better Bush, Roma, Better Boy and maybe Beefmaster or Big Beef. Most were the smaller transplants that cost $3.48 or $3.58 in 3" peat pots, but the Early Girls were larger and cost $5.88 in what was probably either a 5" or 6" plastic (not peat) pot. They also had flats of pansies. Last week they only had violas. I bet next week they'll have flats of petunias. It follows a fairly predictable pattern here. We only went to Wal-Mart and didn't go across the road to see what was at HD because their plants come on the very same trucks from BP, I think, and they tend to get the same plants in at the same time. Exactly the same, but sometimes HD does have pepper plants in about two months too early---and earlier than Wal-Mart does. It was ridiculous to stand there and look at those big monster plants, all of which could eat my tiny tomato seedlings in one gulp. It doesn't make me wish I'd started mine earlier---because our soil is still far too cold for tomatoes. I believe I started mine at the right time for my area given my weather and soil temperatures (even with the recent warm-up). I might feel differently if the soil temperatures start hitting and staying in the 50s while my tomato plants are still 2 or 3" tall and wide. Gardening is an imperfect science. I hope people didn't see those tomato plants and automatically assume it is time to buy them, take them home and plant them because we have some freezing nights in our forecast around mid-week. Dawn

patty_cakes, I've never decorated for nor celebrated Mardi Gras, but think it would be fun. A sit-down dinner or buffet would work, but I think I would already have the masks ready for the guests. I can "see" one of Judith's table settings with the stacking cake plates done with the bright beads and trinkets of Mardi Gras and a mask laying on each plate. A "King" cake is a must. We always had one growing up. And of course beignets. You could google and see what others do to find your own interpretation. Let us know what you decide please.

I don't observe the Chinese New Year and don't know anyone who so I can't help here.

I do Valentine's Day. I decorate, we have the usual gifts and a nice dinner. That's it there. And I bet you would be surprised to find how many married ladies would trade places with you more than once. LOL

We were born and raised celebrating St Patrick's Day. I decorate for it, and buy a card and Irish what-knot for my son. We always have cabbage and potatoes which we love. And, I don't think you have to be Irish to celebrate.

Minnie, I've never seen the rugs you're talking about at Dollar Tree, but I'm going to check them out this year. Sandi

Sandi, I just love your enthusiasm! Motivates me to want to do more decorating. I enjoy the creating process of it, and how nice it makes things look.

I am really impressed that Minnie has FIVE boxes of Valentines decorations. This must be an important holiday for her. Who wouldn't like the idea of love, and of course, most all females like pink, red, and white.

Can't help with Mardi Gras ideas. I'm seem to remember a post on here about someone decorating for it. I'll see if I can find that post again if I have time.

Pattycakes, I think you are on the right track--it is more fun to look for things to celebrate and decorate for. Sandi had some good ideas for you. I think it was Dollar Tree that had some unpainted masks. Just paint them and glue on some feathers and beads, sequins, etc. Have fun.

just stuff I've collected thru the years.

The rugs for Easter are flat ones with pictures on them. I like to put them over the corners of other throw rugs to keep the corners flat!! And one for the cat to sit on while she eats in the kitchen.

I haven't decorated for Mardi Gras in several years but I think as long as you keep the colors - gold, green and purple - you could do just about anything. And you have to have the King Cake at the party otherwise how would you know who has to host the next party? Our party and craft stores always have a lot of decorations so I have a Mardi Gras tree with lights in gold, green, and purple - it is the same tree I use in my bathroom. I just remove the ornaments that look Christmasy and add small masks and jesters.

Why not celebrate Groundhog Day? It could be one of those just because days to break up winter. I found some cute groundhog cupcakes a couple of years ago that I made just for fun. I think if you wanted to do a fun, lighthearted theme around it, you could.

Luvs, how long ago did you see the masks? I know I don't have a Dollar General or a Family Dollar, but there could be a Dollar Tree SOMEWHERE, not TOO far from me~will check the yellow pages. If I don't do a party, would like them for my madigras tree. I have a gorgeous mask I use as a tree topper, and decorate with lime, purple, and turquoise beads. Got a lot of ornaments at Big Lots that had a madigras look to them, but couldn't find masks anywhere. Thanks for the head-up.

Minnie, FIVE BOXES of Valentine's decorations? WOW! My 10 year old grandaughter would love to get into that! LOL

The rugs sound cute, too. I haven't decorated for Easter since the kids moved out, and don't do dinner at my house, either~maybe it's something I need to do it just for ME~it's ALL about the decorating!

PF, do the lights have to be gold, green, and purple~what's the significance of the colors? And what *is* a King cake? TIA

Patty, Mardi Gras traditional colors are gold, green, and purple. Gold for power, Green for faith, and Purple for justice. A king cake (a braided cake with purple, green and gold frosting and colored sugar on top) is baked in honor of the three kings who traveled twelve days to honor Jesus' birth, they arrived on the twelth day after Christmas, 6 January or the day of Epiphany. Long ago they put a bean in the cake but in the south they put a tiny baby (represents Jesus). Whoever gets the piece with the baby is declared King or Queen (you can have a King and Queen cake), give them a crown and they get to host the next party or provide the next King cake. Many people think Mardi Gras started in New Orleans, but it was actually Mobile, Alabama and it is celebrated along the coast from Florida to Louisianna with parties and parades. Traditions have changed over the years and everyone has added their own touch to the parties so you can do what suits you. Mardi Gras ends on Fat Tuesday, the day before Ash Wednesday which I think will be 20 February this year. It is a fun holiday.

I am not an expert on Mardi Gras, just what we have done in the past. You could probably find out more on the internet.

Paintingfool, The baby Jesus hidden in the cake is the same as one of the Mexican holidays! One of my Hispanic customers at the bank ran a grocery store. He always brought us one of those cakes each year.

Adellabedella, loved those cupcakes. I too plan on keeping that idea. Little GD is too young to enjoy it now, but should be a big hit in a couple years.

Pattycakes, I was at Dollar Tree just about a week ago. The masks were in the section where they have the shells, stickers, etc. They are unpainted ones--here they were hanging on a hook. Good luck. Your tree sounds lovely. Nice that you can get extra mileage out of a Christmas tree. I'm getting a fake one next year too--so I can keep it up longer.

Sandi, I cook corned beef and cabbage for St. Pat's--and I do have an Irish heritage, but mostly like the idea of celebrating for good luck! You'll have to be sure to see my painted wood leprechauns--I'll post them on the painting forum--will try to remember to put them on here too.

Luvs, I forgot to say we cook the corned beef with the cabbage. How could I forget that when I grew up eating it? One side of my father's family came from France and the other from Ireland.
We have got to STOP talking about Mardi Gras cause it's giving me ideas and I can't afford to buy more decorations and I want the masks! LOL
I would love to see your leprechauns. My son believed in leprechauns until he was way too old. LOL

I loved the groundhog cupcakes. Once when my kids were little I made Groundhog hamburgers. I mixed rice with the meat and they looked a little "prickly" the kids wouldn't est them. They thought it was really groundhog.

Patty cakes. Do it for you. I do it for me. No one ever sees my decor except one DS and he rarely comments on it.

Minnie, You are so right--we have to do the things that make us happy! Your DS may not say anything, but bet he would miss it if you didn't do it.

This thread is making me hungry. I just made cooked cabbage the other night for the first time in a long time. Just sounded good to me--maybe because the weather has cooled off so much.

In fact, I woke up to white slush all over the ground and rooftops this morning. That hasn't happened here in about 15 years! Usually only SEE it on the mountains north of us. I'm supposed to be in sunny California. LOL

Have to enjoy the cooler weather--it makes it seem even more important to decorate our homes and make them feel warm and cozy. Nice chance to light our candles and enjoy the sight and fragrance too.

Our family does up those holidays. We do it mostly because in the middle of winter we need any reason we can get to party, even if it is just a little.

Martin Luther King Day - marble cake and someone reads a speech

Burns Night - Cock-a-leakie soup, neeps and tatties, and cranachan (nope, no haggis) for dinner and everyone reads a Burns poem

Chinese New Year - red place mats, a Chinese lantern hung from the chandelier, flowers on the table, and Chinese take out

Mardi Gras - beads hung on the chandelier and plopped on the table and worn by those who want, sometimes we make masks for table decoration, jambalia from a box, a king cake made by refridgerator cinamon rolls untwisted and reshaped into a large circle

Mostly these are little more work than the usual family dinner.

My goal for this year is to get CDs of music to accompany many of these. It would be an excuse to get more world music into our home.

A Burns Night is a celebration of the poet Robert Burns on his birthday January 25th. He wrote Auld Lang Syne as well as My Luve's Like a Red Red Rose, Jon Anderson My Jo, A Man's a Man For A' That, and a host of others.

To do it 'right' you do things like have the guests rise as a bagpiper ushers in the haggis (Scottish sausage). There is a Robert Burns grace, toasts to ladies and the gentlemen, and lots of recitation of poetry and songs and a fair bit of drinking. We tame it down quite a bit for just the family, though.

Pf(what's your name?), thanks for all the info re:colors and King's cake~I didn't have clue to either. Of course I know about the Epiphany, but didn't realize it realter to madigras, nor did I know about it originating in Alabama!

All this talk about corn beef and cabbage is really making me hungry~that's something i've never made before and have always wanted to try. Maybe this year!!

Still have to get to my Dollar Tree!!! ;o)

It looks so bare after all the Christmas decs are down! I do a little bit for Valentine's Day and if I do a dinner party during that time, I do my table with that theme. St. Pat's is a definite. My birthday is in March and I have rec'd many lovely "Irish" gifts over the years. I make sure to bring them all out. And some type of entertaining is a must. I am of Irish heritage.
I agree with previous posters, if it makes you happy to decorate for the holidays, do it. It is bleak here until Spring and it makes the house a bit cheerier with the Valentines, St. Pat's and Easter decs.
