Reglazing Tub, Sink & Tile

Hi,

I have a very outdated 1950's bathroom. It has yellow and black tile. I have the typical cast iron tub (not freestanding), and porcelin sink. The main tiles are yellow with a strip of the black near the top.

I'm looking to sell my home, and I want to freshen up that bathroom. I don't want to go through the whole process of gutting it with a full remodel, so I'm considering getting the tub, sink, and tub and wall tile reglazing to a sparkling white. The house dates back to 1911 and when the bathroom was put in when plumbing became available, they put it in a room with very low ceilings. So, in an effort to make the room look bigger, I figured I'd get it all done in white, and use towels and accessories as color accents.

Anyways, my questions are these: Has anyone ever had an experience with having their bathroom updated this way? What is the average cost and were you happy with the results?

I've used an outfit that does this, using a urethane acrylic coating. It's nice because it coats/colors all the ceramic accessories too, i.e. soap dishes, towel bar mounts, toilet paper alcove/holder, shelves, window sills, etc. SEEMS very tough, and is claimed to be long-lasting, but, like you, I sold the prop shortly after, so I can't say what the real world durability is.

OTOH, I'm in Tourist-Central (So-Fla), and I *did* verify a couple of the hotels they said they'd coated, and did get hold of one on-site mgr. who said indeed it was standing up to the tourist traffic (and maid cleaning).

CAVEATS: It's a very THIN coating--basically a super-adherent paint job--so you MUST re-GROUT, or the bright white will make any grout erosion very evident. You might not have any grout erosion at EYE level, but in any old bathroom, there's probably some around knee level (less so for a tub than a shower stall, but still...), and any window sill inside the wetted area. Coating is claimed to prevent further grout erosion.

Most of the re-glazers will take care of stripping old CAULK, and re-caulking once coated, but you're usually on your own with the grouting beforehand.

As for cost, I had a small 6' x 4' BA, w/ tile up to 7' high in the 30" x 48" shower stall, and tile 4' high on the 3 walls outside shower, had the whole room done for $575 (bargained down from initial $650 quote). But that was with the toilet and vanity ripped out, and door off the hinges, so they had an "obstacle free" zone to work in.

It was a thorough process, some epoxy(?) base coat, then the A-E color coat... 3 (half) days total... PREP is everything, and they did it with some nasty acid wash... brought their own exhaust vent fan w/ snorkel, plus BA had an opening window.

Had another quote for only $400, but that was a 1-day process, in and out in 4 hours... didn't sound as re-assuring. ;')

Anyway, it showed well, and certainly gave an early 1960s BA a more up to date appearance.

In FL this re-glazing activity is NOT licensed, so buyer beware. (I think that's why they don't do any grouting or tile repair--because THAT requires a license.)

We had our tub reglazed about 2 yrs ago with a company called Miracle Method. It looks great, and this is our only tub/shower. They can also do the wall tile. Our existing wall tile was in good shape.

Yes, we had our harvest-gold tub turned to white last November. 5 months, so far so good. A co-worker of mine had his done 2 years ago and has had to have the guys back twice to redo it, starting just 3 months after the first attempt. Were his guys idiots? Is his tub magically impossible? Who knows. It seemed to me (from articles and reviews on the web) that a national franchise will reliably do an acceptable job; an independent could be better, or much much worse. So we went with what seemed a reliably adequate chain (Miracle Method) and, like I said, so far so good. Looks fantastic, like a fully white tub, cleaning's been easy so far and it's still unchipped, unscratched, and unstained. I'd say, just do it, unless you can convince yourself that the grey fixtures are really going to look as good as you want them to in your new design.

This decison was the biggest issue before we started to remodel and really held us back from starting sooner (we are now in the middle of it). We wanted to gut the bathroom ourselves but heard how hard it was to get the cast iron tub out. Ours was pink. We had bathfitters come, and the quote was over $3,000 for a custom tub and wall surround. Then we got a quote for reglazing -- $300. He said he would only do it in our downstairs bathroom where we have a window, but will not do upstairs becuase he won't use the chemicals where there is no window -- too dangerous to his health. So we were kind of bummed because getting the tub out from upstairs will be a bear. We were pretty set on reglazing because the downstairs is a guest bathroom and the bath/shower isn't used that much -- unless we move downstairs when we are old :) Then our plumber came to give us an estimate for the rough plumbing -- he suggested not reglazing because it doesn't last, and said here's a hint, take a sledgehammer to the tub -- which we did and it came out in 6 pieces in 1 hour -- and the town took it from the curb. He also begged us not to get our faucets from the big stores so he wouldn't have to rip our walls out in a few years. So now we have a new Kohler white cast iron tub downstairs and are not afraid to face the upstairs bath remodel. We will most likely get Americast upstairs because it is lighter. Just wanted to let you know what we found out about reglazing and an easier way to get the old tub out.

I'm far from an expert, but I went with reglazing when I redid our bathroom, in an old 1928 bungalow. The cost was also $400, if I recall correctly. The reglazing process was very thorough, they removed all the old glaze, down to the original, cleaned, and sprayed the new white glaze. I think the stripping and cleaning is critical, so if you do go reglaze, make sure this is done very meticulously. It has only been one year but we're extremely happy with the reglaze. It looks great, saved time and a fraction of the cost of the total replacement. Like your husband, I also did not want to mess with the plumbing -- which can get complicated for a non-professional DIY job, especially in an old house with old pipes. I cannot speak to how the reglaze will hold up over time. But so far, so good, and at the cost I think we'll be better served just reglazing the tub again when/if it needs it. Plus the old cast iron tub is quality -- they just don't make 'em like they used to any more!

Just had a 66x32 cast iron bellwether installed. Price was high due to the size plus extra install costs. But worth it (to me). Love the feel of cast iron under foot and easy to clean. Plus I couldn't find a tub I liked the style of as much as the bellwether. (It was replacing a pink tub that I painted white many years ago, which I do not recommend because the paint does not hold up well.) If only I had had a 60" alcove, things would have been a lot cheaper, even for cast iron. Also, there was still a fairly long lead time for the bellwether, even though the fire at the kohler foundry was awhile back. We were warned and I was willing to wait.
