Getting fair value for collectibles at a garage sale venue
Comments (14)Thanks to all who responded to my post. I've been about every route with my mother's estate. With Craig's List I usually end up waiting for people that never show up. I don't live close enough to any large population centers to make it worth the trip for anyone interested in just one thing. I had one woman leave an angry message on my answering machine "I drove for two hours and I still didn't reach your town!" I have contacted estate liquidators and the consensus of opinion is that unless I have very high-end antiques (you know - Ming vases and Duncan Phyfe furniture) it would cost me more to pay them to do a sale than I could make from the sale. Most of the dealers here in upstate New York only want the very finest antiques and collectibles. Consignment shops won't take anything either because they are not selling very much right now. Everyone is griping about how bad the antiques market is. I guess I just hit it at the worst possible time. I know my mom bought most of her things, like Depression glass, in the 1970's when it was a hot item and expensive. Now you can't give it away. A few weeks ago I saw a Madrid cookie jar in the local Salvation Army for $2.99. I went back this week and it was still there! I have two pieces of Oyster and Pearl I've been trying to sell - a 14 inch sandwich plate and a divided relish. No one even looks at them. Most people that stop at my sale ask for: military and sports memorabilia, old fishing equipment, jewelry and gold and silver coins. Yeah, everyone has that laying around the house. I made a Web page with photographs of some of the contents of the house. If you'd like to look, click on link below. On another note, I theorize that unless you can have a tag sale on the first or second weekend of the month, don't bother. By the time the third and last week of the month rolls around, people are starting to run short on money and not looking to blow it at a tag sale. Any opinions on this? Comments (10)Ok...the lidded jar on the right side of bay window...love that...with the roses & lil' angel! (I haven't looked at your Part 2 yet...maybe more bay window stuff!) Your Mom & Dad's portraits are precious...I also like the gold hearts you added in the corner of each pic! Your tea cart is beautiful ...that lamp w/the added berries...so pretty! & the rose plate colors just work perfectly w/that lamp! Such a pretty vignette with white vase & red roses! I always love seeing the mercury glass you've collected...pretty pink ones are a fav! & how cute to work in the 'Charming Tales' Val-bunnies! They are so sweet...thanks for posting close-ups! Cute in the dessert stands! Well, it's lookin' quite 'lovely' at your place, PM! TFS! Jeanne S....See MoreI have a question on my Christmas plates.
Comments (29)Hi Ladies, new here but enjoyed the comments of the Lenox plates, excited to see other people with them, I have Lenox Eternal, Lenox Holiday, Lenox Bohem Birds, Lenox Colonial Wreath, Lenox Sentiments of Roses, Lenox Colonial Bouquet, Lenox Woodlands Wildlife and Lenox Trees Around the World. The only plates that you cannot eat off of are the Trees Around the World. I have some experience in china paintingand as long as the decal is under the final glaze that was fired in a kiln they are safe to eat off of. They will have a shiny slick glaze. The reason the Trees plates are not safe is that any plates that ave the raised enamel are not safe. Some other brands of decorative plates, like the Lena Lui and many Bradford Exchange collectors plates are not fired with a final glaze. I never completed my Trees and am so far behind now it would cost a fortune to buy what I need, would be willing to sell them. The Colonial Bouquet are beautiful and my current "need to complete" list. I think I also have the 3 Lenox Quilts plates these were really cool and I wish they had not discontinued them. I hope I hear back from somen of you....See MoreWanted Bradford Exchange Plate.
