What size light over 72'mirror?

We are doing a small remodel in our main bathroom. New faucets and counter top, adding a shower in the tub area..can't believe there never was one there, tile floor and light fixtures. The vanity is 81" with a 72"mirror above and only one sink which is not in the center. This is okay but how wide a fixture and number of lights should I have? I have a 36" oak strip with 6 lights now and because its narrow it does not seem proportional to the overwhelming mirror. We are adding a can light over the tub, there's a fan/light combo and directly overhead when you walk in there is a light. No window. Any suggestions?

I would do 72" or thereabouts even if it meant using relatively lower wattage bulbs because of the number of lights. Is there any possibility of doing a sconce to each side of the mirror instead? I would prefer balance and symmetry of the lighting over the mirror/vanity since they are so large rather than an assymetrical fixture over the sink.

There's no room for sconces because the mirror is too close to the wall(6") One part of the vanity is cut out underneath for seating so I am considering putting 2 fixtures instead of a long one. Although I prefer odd numbers such as a five bulb one, I think I might like two 3 bulb fixtures. Any comments? The toilet is on the same wall as the vanity so I'll have to get a double towel bar or something decorative above it to finish it off.

You don't have to match fixtures in different baths. In fact, you probably couldn't find a designer to recommend that. Builders do it because it is cheap and easy to put the same products everywhere and in every unit. As for the size, it is clearly a matter of personal taste. However, most women find it practical to have the light coming in at an angle rather than overhead.

Just my opinion on the shade size: Just from a "looks" standpoint, I think the cord or rod length should be at least one-and-a-half (twice or more is even better) times the height of the shade. Otherwise, the pendant might look shade heavy. If your ceiling is high enough this is probably not a problem.

Virgil - Thanks for the input.. I should have better explained the photos in my original post.. Photo #1 - View from top of landing down stairs and down hall. In this photograph you can see the red arrow points to the ceiling box where the light fixture will hang from to go over stairs.. In the middle over the railing are wires for ADT smoke/co alarm and also a box for "building code" fire alarm.. At the end of hallway is air return, large circle cutout for speaker, and small ceiling light box for light fixture. Photo #2 - View from end of hallway looking towards landing. In this photograph I have the red arrow pointing to the ceiling light box where the hanging light fixture will be for over stairs. Over the railing you can again see the hanging wires and "box" for smoke/co detectors. Going closer to the window there are three (3) holes. The large circle cutout is for a speaker, the small circle cutout is for light fixture and the rectangular cutout is air vent. I am trying to decide on the light that will hang over the stairs. We will have two (2) light fixtures at either end of the hallway plus the fixture over the stairs. 1 fixture will be over landing and the other towards the end of hallway by the air return, but there is nothing between them except the light fixture that will go over stairs. The idea was that the hanging fixture over the stairs would "spill" light into the hallway next to the staircase.. This is where I could not decide on using down lighting, uplighting, or an open light fixture. We also could not figure out what size fixture we should use. The stairs are 4ft 2inches wide from wall to railing. Below are a few lights we were considering, however we just don't know what size range is "appropriate" for the staircase.. My parents have a light over their 3'8" stairs that is only 10inches wide and I never really thought about it.. I think it looks nice, but not sure if there is a good "rule of thumb" with these types of things... I don't want to close in the area and make it look small, but I also don't want to go too small with the fixture.

Make sure you have 450 lumens of light at the counter for task lighting from cans that are in front of you when you're standing at the island so your body doesn't create a shadow. Then pick anything you like for ambient lighting. Or something colorful without lights.. . .I'd wait until everything else is in there.

Two would work as well IMO, as long as they are symmetrical over the areal.

One type of sconce that could possibly work is a swing arm sconce: back plates are normally about 4" wide and then the arm of the sconce could be angled over the side of the mirror. Also some sconces are quite narrow: I placed sconces in 1 4-1/2" space between the mirror edges and the wall. Had to look at a lot to find those though.

My vanity and mirror are 90 inches long (giant length there-but due to vents only a phone booth for a shower-separate garden tub)

We have 2 3-light fixtures, but we have 2 sinks and one is over each sink. The other bath is a 60, or maybe 66 inch and has a vanity bar that is 6 or 8 bulbs long. Based on that, I don't think a vanity bar is the way to go for your lenth. Get 2 fixtures and maybe leave equal space between them and on each end. Hopefully one lines up over the sink for you!

Thanks for your responses. I have purchased two- 3 bulb fixtures each 24" in length and a new ceiling fixture. The only thing I am questioning now is if I should keep the mirror as is, put it in a frame, purchase a bit smaller one(maybe 60"). I considered two in frames or even doing some rewiring so I'd have room for sconces. But there comes a time when I just say "enough, is enough" and just move on to the next project!

I have a 72” double sink vanity and one mirror 68” wide. how many pendant lights do I need to get? i want to usr the single Kohler Artifacts pendant adjustable pulley lights?
