Opinions on foundation cracks?
Comments (2)The only opinion that counts is the one that you get from the structural engineer that you hire to inspect the home. Ask for additional time for the inspection period, and call the engineer, as well as several contractors post the engineer's inspection to give you a quote on what he tells you need to happen....See MoreNeed opinions on slab choice...be honest!
Comments (31)sparklekitty and kitchenaddict - I have decided to switch to marble for a couple of reasons. First, I can't find a slab of Delicatus platinum (or Alaskan white, etc) ANYWHERE and second, I fell in love with these marble slabs when I was searching for Delicatus. You just never know what you are going to find I guess :) Thank you all for all of your opinions and advice! I think we are going to go with number 2! They are going to ship it in from Minneapolis early next week and we should have it by late September (I am trying to convince myself that this isn't a long wait!). We really do like the drama in number 2 and it also won because it is an 11' slab and we have a 10.5 foot island so we won't have to do a seam if we pick number 2! Again, thanks everyone!!!!...See Morecant decide on backsplash, slab or calcutta tile, opinions please...
Comments (9)I'm assuming you've propped one of your White Dove cabinet doors against the marble & don't like the two together? Could you find an alternate slab? Slab marble is a more dramatic look than subway tile but if you don't like the slab.... Possibly add some trim pieces similar to this picture to your hood - not the doors but the trim pieces on the bottom of the hood. I'm not sure your hood shape could pull off the marble. I've seen pics of boxy marble hoods but they are usually in a contemporary kitchen without a traditional large crown molding (I do love your crown molding). edit: to clarify, your kitchen could totally pull off a slab marble backsplash. I'm just not sure how a marble hood would look in your hood style....See MoreDo I need to fill slab cracks before hardwood install??
Comments (6)I'm not a fan of putting down plywood over concrete just so you can have a nail-in-place hardwood. Soooo many ways this can (and will) go wrong. Personally, if you MUST have a wooden subfloor over concrete, please use a sleeper subfloor system built properly with the proper vapour barrier used. Or in the worst case scenario, something like DriCore (I'm not a big fan, but it will work when done PROPERLY....ahem, I'll say it again, "when done PROPERLY"). You still have to patch the concrete. After that, you can use a vapour barrier (see how you can't get away from that?) then you lay the DriCore panels down and THEN you lay the PLYWOOD over the DriCore....and THEN you nail down the hardwood. Whew! Or you can look at engineered floating hardwood over a vapour barrier (there it is again) and a BEAUTIFUL cork underlay....like 1/2" cork would be AMAZING! As you can see, I will try EVERYTHING I possibly can to AVOID this type of subfloor system you are talking about. And I mean $5000 - $10,000 MORE to get away from it! That's how much I HATE the system you mentioned. Make sure your builder does everything properly (concrete patch, etc) and offers a LONG warranty on that subfloor system. Like 5-10 years (s/he won't like that ONE BIT). If s/he won't do it, then perhaps you would like to look at a different system....See Morekemptoncourt
