I have a similar set to that. Did some research at the library and found out that they were made in the 1920's or 30s. Nice art deco style. A lot of mid-range stores made these. Sears, Wards, etc. Don't know if they're worth a great deal but they sure are beauties! I'm sure they'll look even better when they're fixed up.

Thanks for the reply! since my first posting I've removed all upholstery from the couch and rebuilt/re glued and added more bracing & screws to the frames where original design was inadequate now I'm in the process of refinishing the carved wood mahogany stain and minwax wipe on polyurethane,not original but much better.just purchased the upholstery this evening from a great site www.newtoto.com great products and pricing and they send you free swatches clearly labeled with price,so far I'm very pleased and less 1/3 the price if purchased locally.I'm not worried about value for resale we just really liked the style.

Be sure to post pics of the finished couch and chair. I'd love to see them. It's always so nice when someone takes the time and care to bring old things like this back to life.

My set was reupholstered back in the 50s. Originally it had red plush velvet. One day we'll bring it back to its former glory but in the meantime, this fabric is immune to kitty claws so it's staying.

Well what I found out is that its hard to find info on furniture from this era (between the wars). There's tons of info on Victorian furniture and mid-century modern is quite trendy these days, but 20s and 30s stuff tends to get overlooked. I went to the main Chicago public library downtown looking for info. I found a grand total of one book that was about art deco era furniture.

Now that book happened to have a picture of a couch that was virtually identical to mine. The only difference was mine has the fancy flower carving on the arms and this one had the "rope" carving all around. I'm guessing that mine was the slightly more expensive version. This book dated the couch to the mid 20s but didn't give a manufacturer.

The best place to look for that is in original sources, old Sears and Wards catalogs are great. They're hard to come by though. The only reason I know that mine had red plush upholstery is that the grandchildren of the original owners mentioned it to me.
