BT resistance in GMO is in a variety of pests...in GMO cotton it's becoming less effective for a variety of pests (especially boll worm) because too many farmers seem to think it's their right to plant a full field of BT rather than the suggested 20/80 non-BT/BT in order to give diversity to the pests. Well, it is their right, but it's a stupid use of their rights. Greed has caught up with some farmers in some areas and now they're having to use more expensive pesticide control measures. This is huge problem in developing countries (especially India) and the South-East US. In some areas of the South-East US it's currently a 50/50 (n-BT/BT) recommendation for cotton because of farmer misuse. Where they've tried to control it in India the farmers have turned to black/grey-market seed sellers to source their GMO cotton seed because they've been limited from legit sources based on the amount of known cropland they have. Some of that black market seed has caused residual issues...such as not really being GMO seed and farmers not applying correct pest control issues because they assume the plant will take care of it. I wouldn't do it Lucy. As far as I can see all the mentions of this concoction come from one source and are being repeated by others raher than being based on experience. I am a pretty gungho gardener regarding various scares but foxglove is a plant I wouldn't play about with. It can have serious effects, not just a bit of a tummy upset. I grow them and look at them and that's all. I find that sawfly doesn't come every year. How many bushes do you have? I only have 4 albeit large ones and I have found that vigilance and hand picking work. Another idea I read is to spread a white sheet under the bush and shake it vigorously.

They seem to be growing back, yes. In the process of cutting them back, I believe I also eliminated those nasty caterpillars that get on them every year -- I still don't know how to treat that problem, either. I've tried Bayer pesticide and even pouring some cold brew coffee (lots of caffeine). Conversely, I had a pot outside that had petunias that would start growing back after winter. I thought that was rather interesting, especially for zone 5 here in New England. Most of the do not :) I have read that you need to keep pruning petunias throughout the year. But if I can just figure out how to keep these pests off my plants, I think they will fare better. This year, I think some kind of fungus or microbe attacked them in addition to caterpillars.
