Building a Home

Did you put accent tile or a mosaic in your entryway?

Our greatroom will be all limestoney colored porcelain tile. I was thinking of doing some sort of accent in the entryway to set it off. We have a mosaic in our current home which gets compliments and I found another that I like but am wondering if I should do something more subtle? What did you end up doing?

Oops I meant to ask if you put a medallion in your entry or something else? It has been a long decision day.

Our Brazilian Cherry flooring is going in while I type (Yay!), but I'm having them leave a framed area in the entry for tile. It'll be pretty simple...A 3 1/2' x 5' area of brick colored penny rounds, edged by a triple row of 1x2" slate bricks. It was my 11 yo dd's choice, and I think she did a good job! We thought of doing something more complex, but I really like her more understated plan.

@Dibgar- I owe you an apology, I missed your question from almost a month ago. The vanity is 93" x 20" deep. It's a 1985 golden oak builder grade vanity that we refinished and added pulls to it. The sinks are 20x14 and are 7" from the edge of the vanity. We don't think they are too close to the edge, we have plenty of room. The vanity is basically two 34" cabinets with a space in the middle that was designed to accommodate a vanity bench. We put a shelf in the middle of it and put towels on that and have a basket for dirty laundry under the shelf.

Missleah, I just went through the same thing. Check the thread titled "for those of you with white cabinets and white subway tiles..." I was in despair because I held up a (very) white subway tile we had used to tile the bathrooms next to our white-until-you-see-it-against-something-really-white cabinet door sample. It looked terrible. Little did I know there were many options out there. Luckily a lot of people on this forum came to the rescue with suggestions of tile companies with different shades of white. So far, I have gotten samples of Anchor Bay and Subway Ceramics; both have off-white tiles that look great with our cabinet. I also discovered that our local tile shop carries Irongate (Meredith) tiles; they have a crackle that goes well with our cabinets and some nice decoratives for a backsplash. Samples are definitely the way to go.

Geez Red, you sound like me. After 8 quarts of paint, I think I have finally settled on BM Shelbourne Buff. Now I can call the painters! You just cannot tell with a swatch or even a 2 foot square (at least I can't.) Sooooo, I painted the same wall 8 times and I would live with each color for a couple days and finally I think I've got it! It's gold enough to go with my BM pirate's chest but not overly gold. Besides, I saw it in the local decorator's showhouse and loved it. That always helps - when some real professional somewhere picked that exact same color!

House: Insulation (interior walls) - we hired the spray foam done Prime and paint All trim install, sanding, caulking, painting - after this 'project' I can say with 100% confidence that I HATE sanding, sandpaper, dust, dust cloths.....I will run the other way. :-) Hardwood floor installation Tile installation - floors, back splashes Fireplace surround, stone Cabinet and hardware installation Mudroom lockers/bench Wainscoting Landscaping, under ground sprinkling Screened porch, stairs, railing All clean up which was throughout the build Barn: Framing, shingling, siding, electrical - pretty much the whole thing We were owner build and that is how we were able to do that much. I know some builders will not allow it. It sounds like yours is giving you good leeway for what you are comfortable with. There are many times we were so sick of it but now that we are in there are some nice memories (and some not so nice ones - hehehe) and fond feelings when we look at say the fireplace for example since WE did it.

We have natural slate on our entry way floor. I did a rug pattern with some accent tiles. This is a photo of it before it was grouted and I think it was a bit wet, too.

Most of the living area will be wood, but for the foyer I choose a tanish veined marble and a solid black. The tiles will be 18" or 20" and placed on the diagonal. I wanted something more traditional than trendy, and was afraid I might tire of a medallion, although I think they're beautiful.

Minnt, love your entryway! I love my slate in the mudroom, laundry room and one powder. I need to go back to some threads and read about sealing it, because I haven't done that yet.

I have two medallions. I don't think they're trendy as they've been around for ages. The difference seems to be that they're now more affordable and popular so you see them much more. Ok, so maybe that will make them trendy after all, who knows?

This is my main medallion - it's about 5-6', and the blond travertine is probably similar to your tile.

What does seem to be more "modern" in medallions is mosaic designs, i.e. small pieces of marble/granite to form the shape. Here's a bad photo of my smaller mosaic medallion.
