Another year!!!

Well today is Al's birthday, he is now 52. it's been a different kind of year, thank goodness no heart problems, that he has to go to the hospital about.we are now going through being up all night and sleep during the day. he is in alot of pain, in his legs (for our new friends out there Al is a double above the knee amputee). i never thought he would tuff it out like he is. when i went to the mental health specialist she said you know that your marriage was over years ago, it's time to move on. well iguess i can't or i just won't. anyways, it's cool and crisp out and ds is spending the weekend with us after work. enjoy those last few warm days if you can. i think about you all often. Tell Al Happy 52 Second Birthday!!!! Oh how I would love to be in the 50's, instead of the 60's--although (knock on wood) I am feeling better than I have felt in a long time.
Glad to see you have your son back in your family.

Just a recollection (that is OT) of one of the original Victory Garden programs which featured two English friends who engaged in an annual parsnip competition. Each planted one parsnip seed in a soil-filled 5' tall chimney flu. Both carefully tended his 'crop' until fall when they extracted the parsnips to measure root length and declare a winner. The program showed that each gardener spent most of a day carefully digging his huge parsnip root, almost one grain of dirt at a time, from the confines of the narrow container protecting the root from breakage. It was a fun program filled with the dedication and humor of British gardeners. How I miss those early Victory Garden programs....

Yup. Put the whole head in a paper bag and set it in the back of the refer. It needs enough humidity not to dry out, but not so much as to rot. The vegetable bin generally has too much humidity. The further south you are, the longer it takes to avoid vernalization reset. We have had a string of warmer winters (according to friends that were born here). I was not getting 100% clove formation until I went to much longer chill. Last year I planted a split of 10 VS 12 week chill. I got a single round in the 10 week and the 12 week heads were all larger. I would love to get away with 6-8 weeks that less tropical growers can, but I don't like finding out next spring that half my garlic didn't. Getting seed early enough to chill that long isn't easy. I harvest in April, even the soutwest growers don't get all their crop into the drying sheds until June. I have found Filaree Garlic will put you on their Alaska ship schedule if you tell them why you need an earlier ship date than places like Alabama. Yong Farm has been able to get me seed early too. It is getting late in the order cycle. I need to get my order in as soon as they start accepting them to get my seed. I have been planting in mid to late December because of the long chill. My head size is not what I would like. I think getting the seed into the ground in October would produce larger heads. To that end, I will be planting some of my own seed, grown from bulbils, this October. I would like to be able to develop a couple of strains that are more heat tolerant. This all applies to hard neck garlic varieties. I have not messed with the soft necks yet. As a zone denier, I targeted hard necks because they are supposed to be the least likely to grow in in central Florida.

Yes, I am saying wait til spring but also totally agree with jedoba that it looks like it is starved for sunlight and that's what may be causing the legginess. You can start by moving it into more direct sunlight to see if it slows down the legginess. My plumies and in full, brutal sun, and at this time of year I water daily. Lack of sunlight aside, I do have plumies with long arms despite being in full sun. So, it could be both factors. I think it would be safe, as an experiment, to cut ONE branch about 6" from main trunk and see what happens. My guess is that you will get 1-3 new tips. There is still plenty of hot days to come so little risk of rot, unless we get a rainy spell.

Maybe I'm being more observant - and while winters are mild, I recall a late frost freeze this year and last.... You know what I did just because it was warm yesterday....and I was cleaning out the sprayers and all. I gave this bed a foliar feed of kelp. *I don't know if bulbs benefits from foliar feeds* - but at least i'm giving this problem area whatever input I can. Connie, what a beautiful baby, tell us more!!! are you freezing where you are too? we had afew flakes of snow on friday and sat. morning, but thankfully it's gone! i just went out to get the mail and i must say it's probably only about 25 out! I get a kick out of the university students from southern ontario they have scarves,mitts, parkas and toques on, well all i can say is they haven't seem cold weather yet! debbie ps. - pb i just finished "S" is for "Silence" from the library, i think i was hold number 112! nonetheless, a good read!

We think he is beautiful also, even at 2 and 5 am. I got the shift last night, as his mom has developed a fever and breast infection, so she came to stay with us, so I could help her. Her hubby is in school and does not get home till late.
He is our 4th and probably last grandchild, so I am try to eat him up big time.
Yes our weather has turned a definite cold. We went to upper Michigan last week-end for a wedding and we got to see our first snow and first black ice on the road. Was glad to get back to the lower part, where that has not started as of yet.
My son and his girlfriend are running in the Detroit Marathon this coming week-end, I am hoping it warms a little for that event. He has qualified for the Boston Marathon time and she is trying to do the same.
Well best go get a little shut eye, as the baby is finally asleep.
