Steam showers should have vapor proof lights, that prevents vapor from getting into the light housing or up into the framing bays of the house. For permitted work I can't get a steam installation signed off if the light isn't a commercially purchased vapor-proof light. Sadly, they are usually expensive and/or ugly. But it is what it is.

Some folk use air tight cans and seal them with silicon.

Yes, that's a problem. There are some can lights which can be installed in steam showers, but they will be a specialty product and your licensed electrician should already have special ordered accordingly. The lighting element(s) and the wiring should be COMPLETELY isolated from the moisture of the steam shower. Simply sealing the cover to the tile with a bead of silicone isn't going to be adequate.
Contact your local electrical supply house or Electrician's union for suggestions on which equipment is available in your area and insist that your electrician correct his mistake before final payment.

As a follow-up to Mongo's simulpost, there are some low-voltage vapor-tight cans which are very attractive. The cost, including a ballast, is going to be high but it is an alternative.

I did inquire about the light when it was installed and they told me it was suitable for wet applications. I do not think it is a speciality vapor-tight can light.

I guess I better go back to the electrician and find out, from all the other screw ups on my new construction the last thing I need is a moisture problem in my very expensive steam shower.

To me it just not looking like it is fully sealed, scares the you know what out of me.
