interior and exterior door knobs

We are at the part of our build when we need to pick door knobs. Are there any brands to stay away from? Any really good ones that do not cost an arm and a leg? Has anyone heard of or used Cal-Royal knobs? They have good pricing but I've never heard of them. Any help would be appreciated!

We used Emtek and Nostalgic Hardware and were very happy with both.

Remember of course that this isn't a permanent irrevocable change. If anyone wants to turn your house into a museum, they will have to change whatever you put in anyway and it won't be hard. Knobs are like wall paint. They aren't permanent. (I admit I looked high and low--and ended very low--to find knobs to match my original small brass 50s mushroom knobs. But I like them!)

The entry door handle set is probably a Schlage. It would have a stamp/logo stating it was ThermaTru brand lock. I don't see that on your photos. Those don't look like they are Multi-Point locks (certainly not the gray/blue door). So you should be able to replace it. Type in "keyed entry set door hardware" or just "door hardware". Plenty of options out there. Sliders may require some more research. Call your local lumber yard see if they sell ThermaTru and talk to a salesperson. Best of luck

We like Schlage, and they have a nice matte black finish, as well as quite a few knob styles, which you can mix and match with their rosette styles to create a look like you show.

Do you open your windows in spring and fall and let the fresh air in or keep heat/ac going all year? Unless you need a handicap handle, seriously consider using just basic style knobs -- but choose stainless steel for those knobs and for the hinges. Stainless steel is not going to discolor as other metals likely will (unless, of course, you keep the house climate controlled 24/7 365). Rounded knobs or round levers are more comfortable to the hand than corners. No matter how good a square lever handle might look, it will not be a comfortable.. At least try one before investing in a whole house full of whatever you're considering so you know what you're getting.

We also used Emtek and are happy with them. We've been in 39 months.

We used Emtek on the front doors and Schlage on the sides and back. Both brands can be keyed the same.

I have emtek, some of the sets seem very stiff, but I have a feeling they were installed badly.

Bought mine from Simpson Hardware online, great prices very good service.

Bought the Emteck interiors from Homestead hardware. See link below. They had the best price on the crystal knobs.

Brutuses, cdecker1 and others with the crystal knobs from Emtek - Are those olde town or astoria style? They are so beautiful.

One other thing to consider - handles instead of knobs. This is our last house, and as we're not getting any younger we wanted it to be as handicapped-friendly as possible. So, no knobs but handles (which are easier on arthritic hands) on every door here.

We have levers also. They are great, but one of our dogs can let himself in and out - which is helpful at times, and at others not so much!

allison, I had a cat once who could let himself out also with a levered door handle.

I'm worried in the new house, with the ice dispenser on the outside of the fridge, that my dogs will learn how to dispense their own. They love ice and once they see daddy getting it out of the front of the door I'm afraid there might be a problem. LOL
