Mama loves her bicycle horn!

My 87 year old Mama moved in with me in March and we needed something loud for her to call me when she needed.

The old time bicycle horn with the black bulb on the end is a wonderful thing for Mama and me.I can go outside or on the other end of the house or even at the neighbor's;

she squeezes the bulb on the horn and I can hear her calling.

I kept looking for something loud enough for her to use and calling my cell phone is difficult for her and she couldn't holler loud enough and one day I was walking around Walmart and this kid was blowing that horn and it was so loud I heard it across the store. That's what she needs I told myself. For $4 my problem was solved.

Since she's had it I've had so much more freedom and don't have to worry about her. She also has the on call button around her neck for ambulance and that gives both of us peace of mind too as I am able to go shopping.

Just thought I'd share this with ya'll.

This is a wonderful forum with so much useful information and great people.

Just a personal note about bicycle horns.

I had some serious back surgery and I couldn't turn myself over. I had to be turned at least every two hours, but it was usually more often.

The Husband Guy was worn out from lack of sleep. One afternoon I needed to be turned in the worse way. He didn't answer when I called. So I called my daughter in law who lived across the street. She dialed the house and gave the phone to her little three year old daughter and told her to let it ring until Papa answered. When he finally did, she said "papa, mema wants you in the bedroom." and hung up.

The next day the DIL and her mother came to visit and brought a bicyle horn that had come in handy during another person's illness. It was a wonderful thing!!! He could hear me over the entire house. I didn't know the dratted things were sooooo loud.

So, if you have someone that is confined to bed or a chair......get a bicyle horn. I agree, they are well worth the price.

My mother-in-law would sometimes try and get up in the middle of the night (she would not call me), so I started putting a set of the large jingle bells (a large group, like Santa might carry) on her walker at night and put the walker so that she had to reach and pull it toward her before she could use it. I heard it every time, but I do not think it ever woke anyone else.

I have to admit that even though I'm not into Country music, I do love and admire George. When he is in concert in San Antonio it is almost impossible to get tickets. I tried to get 2 tickets online the last time he performed there and was at the site minutes before they went on sale and still wasn't fast enough. It sold out in a couple of minutes! A couple that I know from here were celebrating their anniversary, so they closed off both ends of the street by their house for a street dance and invited half the town. They hired George for the music. LOL Yes, that was quite a few years ago when he lived just 45 miles away. In fact he might have still been in college at the time. Everyone liked him, but no one knew what a star he would become!

My mother was not treated well when she was a child. She was given away when she was four years old. I don't know the exact circumstances....how much it was discussed or anything like that. She was illegitimate....and I am sure that was much more frowned upon when she was born in 1904 than it is now. She said she was playing in a ditch in front of her house and a well to do man in the community drove by in his wagon. He asked her mother to give her to him. And she did. Like I said...I don't know how much thought went into that...or anything else about it, but she had a very difficult childhood and was treated more like a servant. She was never legally adopted and didn't inherit anything from that family. I do know that it stayed with her forever. The last words she ever said to me were, "When I was four years old, my mother gave me away." She was 97 and had been bedridden for several years. She didn't know anyone....didn't talk very much. But that was the last words she ever said to me. I am often surprised at how motherly she turned out to be, not having a good role model. So, I know it can be done, and Moni and those who didn't have a close relationship with your mothers, I think it is wonderful that you were able to over come that and have a close bond with your children.

I don't think the Oslo to Bergen route is a particularly fast train. A quick look suggests the route to be 450-500km (just at or a bit less than 300 miles) done in 6 hours, so less than 60 mph. The French TGV model (that runs throughout much of Western Europe) regularly does long stretches at 300 kilometers per hour, just under 200 mph. The high speed rail beds are laser straight when possible with gentle curves. The route from Oslo to Bergen goes through a lot of valleys, has a lot of curves and turns, and most certainly wouldn't permit high speed. An interesting bit of trivia - when the high speed line between Paris and London (through the Channel Tunnel) was being laid out, the French were able to give priority under the law that permitted obtaining the needed land parcels to allow straight segments and high speeds. On the UK side, obtaining the needed land was not possible to the same extent and so the British segment from the Tunnel to London was less straight and had lower average speeds than the same train could travel on the French side. i don't know if that's changed, I haven't taken it in a few years.

My husband had Alzheimer's and after hearing so much about them getting up and leaving the house I put a cast iron bench in front of our bedroom door and hung a small wind chime under the seat. We had a bathroom in the bedroom so he could go there without leaving the bedroom. After trying it one time he never tried again.
