I'm not sure if I posted this correctly, but I do remain curious if anyone has heard of George Raduano lamps??

They were of a heavy plaster material, solid, not hollow, and usually had a simple round ball finial.

I can't post pic, as lamp is now at Mom's place, but it sure was pretty...as if a drapey toga fabric (only hard plaster)!!

Any remembrances or knowledge of this lamp maker appreciated, my search turned up nothing!

Sorry....never heard of that company nor Down by the Sea Lamps...

Thanks, Linda...sweet of you to get back to me so quickly, OH REVERED AND GREAT ONE!!!

Actually, the lady at my favorite lamp shade store knew the guy who made similar lamps (down to the plain ball finial!) and suggested maybe it was the same maker, and told me he must be well up in years now. He must have been a local Florida fellow.

I Googled, no luck.

Nevertheless, somehow the lamp when I bought it at Goodwill for $9.99, seemed unfinished. It was white and chalky..the chalk would rub off onto my fingers. As if it had been primed with chalk, but not painted!

Mom dusted it well, applied artists' gesso as a primer, and then we spray painted it ivory bisque. When we took it to the lampshade store, that is when the lady suggested it was one of George's lamps.

We selected a new shade, and threw on a lovely tassel that has the colors of Mom's bedroom, and kind of hangs about where the "knees" would be on this statuesque lamp, and OMG, it is now a REAL beauty! Mom LOVES the lamp!! We were just wondering about who would have made a lamp that just wasn't "finished" ....and left all chalky, alone, and forlorn in the thrift store!!!

Hi Donna, Yes, Catts need a lot of light to bloom. If the pseudobulbs are fully mature and not enough light was given during the critical period of sheathing/budding, they will likely never bloom, but will give support (food and moisture) to the plant. Some Catts have dried sheaths that, with proper culture, including light, will bloom eventually. Some Catts take awhile to bloom, even though the light is good. Many hybrid Catts bloom more than once a year, and species Catts usually bloom once a year. The seasons vary, according to the type of Catt and environment. Since you've just installed lights, you can expect to see blooms any time...some might have been waiting for more light and will likely bloom earlier than you'd expect, providing they are receiving the correct amount of light, along with your good culture. Fascinating...I have to look some of those things up because I don't even know what they are. I have just started to collect Pacific Northwest studio pottery from about 1945 on (I live in Oregon and there's a long interesting history of 20th c. art pottery here), and getting into glass a bit (coming to Blenko--Husted and Myers, mostly -- late but I still find pieces every so often), and I do love quirky folk art things as well. Not incredibly valuable but I've always valued a story more than anything :)

Your first question regarding paint is a very good one and I'm interested in seeing what kind of feedback you get. We just finished a remodel and didn't want a high sheen in our new master bath. Based on the reps recommendations from Sherwin Williams we went with a satin finish in SW Sea Salt. I was a bit hesitant but we were told it would do fine. However, after using the new shower a few times, we noticed water drip stains from the steam flowing down the walls EVERYWHERE. They don't clean off and now we have to repaint so we're a bit annoyed. In regards to the baseboards, we did wood. A previous owner used some of that vinyl trim in one of our bedrooms and I have to say, it looked cheap (to us) so vinyl wasn't even a consideration. Maybe for crown, where the eye is farther away it would be ok, but not base board or other trim. That's just my thoughts. The elements you're bringing in sound lovely, but very very neutral or bland. I would use the paint color as your opportunity to introduce a little pop. That doesn't mean you need to use something bright or overly energetic, a soft aqua, a blue or green gray or even a cafe brown would look pretty, compliment the other elements in the room and still offer an airy and calming feel.

Sorry if this post is chaotic. I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed. We are in the middle of a full kitchen remodel of our 1921 pseudo-Prairie style house, and need to make some lighting choices. I don't have plans available, but here are some basics: We will have a U-shaped kitchen (approx 12' x 14' x 8') with the 8' long stretch formed by a peninsula (with raised bar top for counter seating). There will also be a 5' long island in the middle. No upper cabinets. Two west-facing windows and 12ft wide sliding glass doors facing north. Our original plan was the following: 1. Recessed lights (4" LED) above the countertop for task lighting 2. Recessed lights (6" LED) above the passageways 3. Semi-flush ceiling fixture (300W incandescent) above the island for ambient and task lighting 4. Three pendants (halogen) over the bar seating area Our architect questions the use of recessed cans, which he says affect sound transfer between floors and also don't provide as much light as flush mounted (so you need more of them). He also doesn't think that they fit with the style of the house. My original plan was based on the assumption that recessed cans would do just that -- i.e., "recess" into the background so that the main ceiling fixture and three pendants would be the main focal point. It also seems much easier (and cost effective) to find recessed LEDs. We have to contend with Title 24. Can anyone give advice on what might work? Are there quality LED lights that would work as task lighting and passageway lighting but wouldn't make our ceiling look like a collage of competing fixtures?

My guess is he is or was a local artist who made lamps....and either died or sold his business and somehow someone salvaged an unfinished lamp base. They decided they didn't like it or want it any longer and gave it to the thrift shop....where you found it!
I have a small painting by a local artist who's work always looked "overworked" to me. At her estate sale I bought a small unfinished oil of a child by the sea side and just love it!
Ask around locally at antique shops and decorator shops to see what you might find out about George Raduno.

We sell George Raduano lamps at The Lamp Connection in Stuart Florida. His son is running the business and making some beautiful tropical lamps , some in custom colors!!
