My standard answer is wood floors are okay in a master bath, but I'd never recommend them in a kids' bathroom.

I do have brazilian cherry flooring in my master bath (and throughout the house) and teak countertops over cream-colored cabinets in the master bath.

No worries whatsoever, they still look great.

I'll also include a standard warning though...if your toilet tank sweats and drips condensate in the humid seasons, then the continual dripping can damage the wood flooring.

I put wood floors (site finished oak) in my master bath, against the advice of everyone, because I really wanted them to flow from the master bedroom. I love how it looks.

I know I will be careful and no one else uses the bath. With a Swedish finish the only real concerns I have are the places where it meets the tile tub and shower areas (water sitting on top in other areas just evaporates).

Wow, both of your baths are Amazing, I would love to see the rest of your homes!!! Anyway, thanks for the advice. What do you think of a less expensive wood for a vanity top? Do you think it would stil work? Would any kind of wood on the floor work the same? I am asking because I have a very low budget for this project. Thanks for sharing. Terri

Sure, pretty much any species can work on the floor.

For the countertop, I'll only caution if using an undermount sink due to the exposed end grain of the wood at the rim opening. If you use a drop-in sink, there is less worry.

If the wood has an open grain, use a pore filler first, then when you use polyurethane you'll get a glass-smooth surface with less effort.

With plank glue-ups, wood can move. It wants to move. You can best control movement by using vertical grain wood versus flat sawn, and urethaning all sides of the countertop (bottom and edges too) instead of just urethane on the top.

It is a bathroom countertop, so it's not going to get worked over hard like a kitchen countertop.

Thanks Sunshinetm. I don't know what is less expensive than oak, I really didn't price other species because I wanted to match the bedroom floor. I did do some research to see if anything could look close to the oak but be more durable and am pretty sure I read that engineered flooring shouldn't be used in a bath, nor should laminate (but will let the experts weigh in on that). I looked and looked for a satisfactory woodgrain tile, but found nothing close to the oak and what I did find was even more expensive than the wood. One thing that I did find that I will use when i redo my main floor bathroom (which gets more traffic and people would not be careful enough for a wood floor) is a top quality vinyl (I don't know the brand) that is installed in squares, I think, that looks like a larger format tile with a wood border around each tile. The wood part is exactly the color of my wood floors and I just loved how it looked.

I thought someone told me engineered wood is better in a bathroom than wood but I have heard so many conflicting things. I know I can't afford to have the type of flooring you have installed. We do have some engineered wood flooring in our other bathroom (couple yrs now) & it seems to holding up perfect. I am a little concerned about hair spray & such getting on the floor becaue how would you clean it? They sell a cleaner for the floors we have but I doubt it would take hairspray & such off, hopefully I am wrong about that. Maybe I should ask on the flooring forum? I really do not want laminant but I have never seen what you are referring to. We don't do a lot of entertaining here so it is mostly only DH & myself. If I go with tile I don't want a wood grain look, I would want it to look like ceramic tile. LOL Thanks for the help. Terri

Mondoct -- I love your vanity. I've spent hours and hours looking for something close to what's spinning in my noodle and yours comes closest. I love how the crown molding seems to run down the wall and blends with the cabinets, almost like they're the same piece of wood spreading all over the bathroom. We're having a vanity built that should look similar to this, but not so much detail in the moldings. We're going for more of a modern country look. Anyway, we just purchased a slab of reclaimed Myrtle to be used for our countertop. Almost of the contractors we've met with have cringed when I've said we're using wood for the countertop, but we're confident it will work.

Wondering what you're used on your teak. Teak is as water resistant a wood as possible, but what did you finish it with? I keep hearing that Waterlox is one of the best products to use so we're planning on applying multiple coats to our Myrtle. Kudos again on a beautiful vanity and bathroom.

Waterlox is an excellent finish, you won't go wrong with it. The countertops in this bath were finished with spar urethane. A couple of coats of gloss for durability, then finished with a couple of coats of satin for a quieter finish.

Thanks for the comments about the cabinets. Kind of funny that my wife nixed that cabinet corner detail when I showed her my drawings and a little mock up, she though it was a bit fussy. It wasn't until after I finished building them that she came to love that little detail.
