Just seen posts wondering where you are. We all hope things are fine with you. Perhaps the computer is down, lets hope it is minor and not major. I hope you post soon....has summer landed in Canada yet>>>>>sunshine and warm weather....and hope Al and family are doing well....HUGS Gabby

Good morning, well at 10 am it's already 73 degrees and humid (it feels like we live in florida! with the humidy and heat!). our computer was in the shop for over 2 weeks and it is loaded with only the basics (Connie, i can't reply to you because of the programme they have installed so i have to wait till theu find the recovery disks from another store, imagine a big chain that can't find disks and they have tried 4 other stores now they have to order them from the states!, so i will reply to you soon, would love to hear about your butterflies!). The leaves are not out yet, however, our plum and apple trees have white and pink blooms! Al has had 2 minor heart attacks but seems to be fine right now and is going to go to physio tomorrow for his hand, this weather we've been having has him in constant pain, so i'll be making a doctor's appointment later on today. one of the reasons i think he had a heart attack is because of some good news Carley was accepted to her first choice and second choice university (really the same university but 2 different programmes) with a busary and scholarship for the 4 years, and also an offer from the university here in our town and a scholarship, not as good as the offer from out of town though, the busary was one of 20 from across Canada!, so she will be going out of town instead of a 5 minute car ride to school! - go figure! i am busy making grad gowns yes gowns, not for a bunch of girls just mine! for those of you who are new, i am a quilter and i do volunteer sewing for a hockey league and have done this for the past 13 years!, so we buy a bunch of patterns and i have just a ton of fabric so i end up making 6 gowns out of extra fabric, but i say to her there's no way i'm putting the zippers in them now, i hate putting in zippers!, so that is the big laugh here, she says to her friends my mom made me 6 dresses and she didn't put the zippers in, since they are not sewers they do not find this funny at all. needless to say after i talk to all of you i am going back to the dress, red satin yes red satin, cocktail length and it is a high fitting halter style, she pick it all out, she said she didnt want anything skankey(sleezy)it must be elegant, so only 16 days left of high school! dear son is not at home, not yet, in my eyes, he must still learn alot about the feelings of others and just general life skills, he turned 23 on tuesday and was also made sales manager of the store! he is thinking about opening his own store now, but with all the thousands of people out of work here, i don't think it's a good idea. well it's off to the dress, wish me luck, and welcome all the new folks! 10 minutes of uv rays are good for you (Cdn. study) just don't overdo it! enjoy your day!!! debbie

Hey there, Deborah. I still have no ice on my pond and it is two weeks since you posted last. Your weather leads ours so maybe your water has frozen since then. I thought I would add a comment or two. The Barley straw ball is not going to do anything to keep the ice open. It will just freeze in place. The tennis balls might work but I always found them on the bottom after they broke open and sank at the first hard freeze that lasted long enough to close the ice. They hold up just fine when you are hitting them around in hot weather but cold makes them brittle. You need something that can be compressed like an inflatable pillow tethered to the bottom so it stays in place. Ping pong balls work if you don't mind the dents that appear. You need to confine them to a small space so there is not a lot of water between them.If the ice gets thicker than the diameter of the ping pong ball the hole will close up anyway. I tried to keep a pond the same size as yours open all winter with a heater and wound up with a heavy frost layer on everything around the pond. It looked like the worlds heaviest fog. I wound up removing the fish on Christmas day. What a mess. I kept the fish in the garage in the winter after that until I could dig a bigger pond a couple of years later. Horton's wood cover sounds like it could be a lot safer than a plastic sheet. The potential problem I see would be if the wind could lift it up. A cement block would solve that problem. There have been a number of threads on keeping the frogs alive during the winter. Lots of failures too. I haven't tried because frogs don't manage to get to my pond. However, after reading many threads on the subject I think I can suggest a solution to the problem in the future. By the way, this is not my solution, it is suggested by someone else who has a web site elsewhere. I just can't remember where it is. An area close to the pond should have a hole dug 12 to 18 inches deep that is backfilled with loose compost or chopped dried leaves or even sand. The frogs will go to the bottom of this backfill and hibernate until spring. Material such as quilt batting can strangle or suffocate the froggie as it shifts around. Otherwise, if you have a properly maintained garden area, the frog will be just as happy there since it would be easy to dig itself in. Freezing does not harm a frog. They produce their own anti-freeze. They are killed by dehydration. I once found the dissicated remains of three frogs who made the mistake of using a bag of lime in which to hibernate. I have also found a seemingly dead frog in the bottom of a ball of soil in a flower pot that broke. I left the ball of dirt in the sun frog side down and as it thawed the frog thawed too. It found a new spot to dig in since the soil scattered. In a deeper pond they would be safe in a bucket or pot of sand or clay such as you would use for a water lily. Sandy

Hi Kaye, and of course you are welcome and anyone else that you would like to invite. I'm so glad my daylily friends are passing the word! Deb and I have been trying to get this plant swap going now for 2 years and we've been doing pretty good. You'll have a ton of fun. I'm like you, in that I like tropicals, too. Of course, my greenhouse is filled to bursting in the winter. LOL. OK, I would love to get any of the following: Any rain lilies, Hedychiums - Yellow Butterfly, Disney, Pink V, Luna Moth, Crinums - Ellen Bosanquet, Powellii pink, scabrum, and more, Iris - Japanese - any, Curcuma Elata and the Zedoaria 'Bicolor Wonder'. Am I being much of a pig yet? Of course, I would LOVE the Dianella tasmanica 'Variegata'! I have some new Curcuma's that I got this year - Pink Supreme - and the others I'll have to go get the names of them. I have one Burgundy Pineapple lily, tons of canna, (Richard Wallace), Rice Paper Plant - (if you get some of this, you may be cussing me out in a few years), Maranta a. variegata, PANCRATIUM Hymenocallis zeylanicum, Air Potato, if I can find that little potato that I dropped off the vine this afternoon, Abutilon 'Marion Stewart", I also have 2 pieces of a Hydrangea that my kids gave me years ago that is as tall as I am now. Found a couple of branches that were laying down on the ground so I cut them off the mother plant and they're out in the greenhouse now in a bucket of water. I have tons of Datura seed, the normal white and also the purple swirl. I have Pink Frost brugmansia and a yellow/orange one, not sure of the name. I also have a collection of Philodendrons that I might be able to get some cuttings from. P. Caulkin's gold I can definitely get a cutting, and a couple more that are in the greenhouse. Oh, and I can get a bunch of cuttings of both of my Glory Bowers (Clerodendrum thomsoniae), one is white with red bleeding, and the other is pink with red bleeding. I also have Daylilies (can you believe it?). Ok, that's enough for now. Let me know if you're interested in trading any or all of the above. hahahahahahha Thanks, Vickie

Linda, i admit i'm scared, what if you think boy, is she ever boring, boy is she is the most ugliest person i've ever seen! but i am really looking forward to meeting you! maybe we can go shopping, and my shopping consists of the sal. army, and yard sales maybe we can get you alot of wood things to paint. but, i do wish we were ALL meeting! this has turned into one great family here. we had rain mostly all weekend and i spent only an hour and a half in emerg. for them to look at my ankle (it pays to be a frequent visitor). i've just put up another one of those nylon sun shades between the garage and house so Al won't fry being out, plus it was more for me so i can deal with the plants in the backyard. for some reason, even living on a lake, we have odd even watering days, i don't water much, save the rain water in huge buckets, because water is so expensive here, average bill is 120.00 every 3 months which is way too much. i went to 2 yard sales and picked up beautiful material and outdoor things and books books and more books. i have to say i do have great kids, they haven't caused me any grief and have always kept busy and they were always allowed to pick if they wanted to play sports or dance the choice was theirs same with books, it makes me sad when i see parents picking out their kids books in the library and not giving them a choice and let them think of their own. al apparently is still employed at the college here and had academic upgrading - people who never got their high school diploma and wanted to take college programmes. as you probably know we have grain elevators here, paper mills and there used to be alot of shipping, but that has changed so most of the people here only have at the most grade 10 if this is where they choose to work. thank goodness al and i chose higher learning, so he has people maybe in their late 50's or early 60's going back to school, so he has math, english and a computer lab (but i learnt everything about the computer from carley!, she even knows more than matthew) matthew is golf crazy right now and enjoyed going to Lutsen for the day, he says it was amazing. on the rainy days i was found in the kitchen re-lining cupboard and drawers, and basically cleaning up the mess in here. the humid rainy weather had al in alot of pain and he hasn't had alot of sleep this past weekend. PeaBee i'm almost finished the book, i do think that Joan Hess knows of a teen that as she said in her other books "talks in capital letters" i know i for one wouldn't put up with her daughter Caron talking to me like that! but since it is a book it is funny. well we are supposed to have another thunderstorm this afternoon so i better do what i can outside before i spend the day inside. Hey deborah_ps, Thanks, yes it's going bye bye. No it does not "go" with the house. It is a modern brick in the original section of the house, which is a 150+ year old log cabin. It wasn't vented because he built this monster for an electric fireplace. I had a friend and expert look at the support system in the cellar and he says that part of it is fine, but of course the particle board/carpet was not. We were thinking we would put in an unvented gas log. But we have decided that the square footage we will gain back is worth the effort of tearing it out. More manpower would be nice, but we should be able to handle it.

Hey there Deb, I second the motion that you seem always so busy. I guess it passes time for you. I am glad that it was not ill health of Al or one of your family that kept you away. These darn computers are a pain, but so much fun communicating with friends. What would we do with-out them? Sounds as if your kids are doing wonderful, makes it alot easier when they are. Congrads on them. Guess it takes a while for summer to get to Canada huh. We were in Florida for a month seeing our boys and there were days it was so HOT, it was just unbearable to be out, air condition felt good tho. Well you keep taking care of your wonderful family and keep in touch.I will check later....HUGS Gabby

It's sooo good hearing from all of you! Well let me start with the dresses, good thing i enjoy sewing! for some reason the final dress that she will be wearing is scaring me, and i'm sewing so slow! it's not that thematerial is expensive total price 13.89! we got her high heels 39.00, and this little beaded bag 25.00, so we got off easy! the ceremoney is tomorrow night at our community autitorium and the road is called Paul Shaeffer drive, yes paul is from here. Matthew will be coming too and has even ordered her flowers all by himself. he was over on sat. and sun. doing yard work for us at no charge, the grass in the back yard was up tomy knees! and our back yard is huge 60 X 120, so it was very nice of him! i know Al is excited about tomorrow night, he's getting his hair washed (by me)_ this afternoon when it's a little warmer out - only 60 right now. i shortened his new pants last nite (for our new friends, Al is adouble above the knee amputee. we also went looking for a new car on friday, and i must tell you that since we get US tv, our cars and trucks are about 2,000.00 more, but it's notworth it for youto comefor vacation atyour dollar doesn't get much of an exchange rate, ithinklastyearyour dollar was worth 1.40 now it's 1.04, and gas is 105.9 a litre! anyways no new carfor awhile yet. i went to3 church yard sales andgot books,books andmorebooks and alsomore fabric! so i spent a grand total of 3.00. Looks tomethatsomething iswrongwiththe keyboard now - lol. Gabby, the weather last weekfelt like we were in Florida, the humidy is so high here, but anything is better than cold and snow! it is so pretty right now, people have spring bulb plants in bloom and the apple trees and other flowering trees and my fav. lilacs, we have them down both sides ofourback yard it smells beautiful! well i have to vaccum so i can sew a little more, enjoy the day! and lets herewhat everyone esle is up to when they have afewfree minutes! debbie
