Good morning, well at 10 am it's already 73 degrees and humid (it feels like we live in florida! with the humidy and heat!). our computer was in the shop for over 2 weeks and it is loaded with only the basics (Connie, i can't reply to you because of the programme they have installed so i have to wait till theu find the recovery disks from another store, imagine a big chain that can't find disks and they have tried 4 other stores now they have to order them from the states!, so i will reply to you soon, would love to hear about your butterflies!). The leaves are not out yet, however, our plum and apple trees have white and pink blooms! Al has had 2 minor heart attacks but seems to be fine right now and is going to go to physio tomorrow for his hand, this weather we've been having has him in constant pain, so i'll be making a doctor's appointment later on today. one of the reasons i think he had a heart attack is because of some good news Carley was accepted to her first choice and second choice university (really the same university but 2 different programmes) with a busary and scholarship for the 4 years, and also an offer from the university here in our town and a scholarship, not as good as the offer from out of town though, the busary was one of 20 from across Canada!, so she will be going out of town instead of a 5 minute car ride to school! - go figure! i am busy making grad gowns yes gowns, not for a bunch of girls just mine! for those of you who are new, i am a quilter and i do volunteer sewing for a hockey league and have done this for the past 13 years!, so we buy a bunch of patterns and i have just a ton of fabric so i end up making 6 gowns out of extra fabric, but i say to her there's no way i'm putting the zippers in them now, i hate putting in zippers!, so that is the big laugh here, she says to her friends my mom made me 6 dresses and she didn't put the zippers in, since they are not sewers they do not find this funny at all. needless to say after i talk to all of you i am going back to the dress, red satin yes red satin, cocktail length and it is a high fitting halter style, she pick it all out, she said she didnt want anything skankey(sleezy)it must be elegant, so only 16 days left of high school! dear son is not at home, not yet, in my eyes, he must still learn alot about the feelings of others and just general life skills, he turned 23 on tuesday and was also made sales manager of the store! he is thinking about opening his own store now, but with all the thousands of people out of work here, i don't think it's a good idea. well it's off to the dress, wish me luck, and welcome all the new folks! 10 minutes of uv rays are good for you (Cdn. study) just don't overdo it! enjoy your day!!! debbie

Oh Debbie...for goodness sake, be careful!!! I know you have a lot on your mind and when we do, we tend to be prone to accidents...we're just not really focusing on any one thing. Since you've shared all of your accidents of late, I will share something with all of you, which I haven't told anyone else, since I was SO darn embarassed...On Sunday, we were planning to go to my sister's house for Father's Day...mom was already there because she had spent the nite Sat nite. I was getting stuff ready to bring with, my DH had gone over to pick up his mom to take with us...so I'm running around, getting things together and my darling Golden Retreiver, Cheyenne, who is almost two now, decides it is play time and starts taking anything he can get his mouth on and dragging it all over the house, just to get my attention (very much like a kid)...so I'm chasing him and thinking, this isn't going to work, he's so full of energy (and this is after a 3 mile morning walk with us) and I have to crate him while we're gone because he still can't be trusted, so I'm thinking I'll give him a tranquilizer, one of his, from the Vet...only use them when really needed..my thoughts were it was better to tranq him so that he's calm in his crate and then maybe he'll be calm when we get home with mom cause she can't stand any kind of commotion....OK, long, long, story short...what do I do? I TAKE THE TRANQUILIZER!!! Don't ask me why...it was NOT a conscious decision and I realized it about 30 seconds after I took it...so now my husband is back with his mom, so now I give one TO THE DOG this time, and we leave...I'm thinking, the dog weighs 75 lbs and the meds go by weight, I weigh much more than him, so I should be ok...we get to my sisters and I feel like I've had three martini's!!! And, I am so embarassaed because of what I did, I can't tell anyone!! I'm trying to help my sister prepare and I'm dropping one thing after another...I finally said I had a horrible night and needed to go lie down, which is what I did and slept for about two hours...after that, I was a little groggy, but ok...talk about being distracted!!! So, Debbie, try to focus more (like I plan to do!) and maybe we can both stay safe!!!....take care, Mimi

Too funny Linda, I had my casual gathering tonite and served it also...It really is good. I forgot to add that it makes 6 healthy servings, or lots of leftovers, which are good for days :) Paella Salad 1 cup good olive oil 2 cups long grain rice 5 cups chicken stock 2 generous pinches saffron 1-1/2 teaspoons salt 1/3 cup red wine vinegar 1-1/2 pounds medium sized shrimp, cooked, peeled (Costco) 1/2 cup julienne slivers red pepper 1/2 cup julienne slivers green pepper 1 cup green peas (I use uncooked frozen) 1/2 cup halved black olives (a mix of greek olives are good) 1/4 cup chopped parsley 1/4 cup chopped chives or green onion 1.In large heavy bottomed pot with lid, heat 1/4 cup of the oil over medium high heat. When oil is hot add the rice and cook, stirring until it is opaque, 2-3 minutes. Add the stock, saffron, and 1/2 tsp. of the salt. Stir well to dissolve saffron and bring to a simmer. Lower the heat and cook, covered, until all liquid has been absorbed, about 20 minutes. (try not to over cook)When rice is cooked, remove and turn out into a large shallow bowl or pan and let cool to room temperature. 2. To assemble the salad, place the vinegar and the remaining 1 teaspoon salt in a large mixing bowl. Whisk in the remaining 3/4 cup olive oil. Add the shrimp, red and green peppers, peas and olives. Let marinate 10 minutes. Then add the rice, parsley and chives. Mix well. 3. Serve at room temperature or slightly chilled.

Hey, Deborah! Thanks for the kind words. I'm really not an expert...I just have a few years of experience growing this plant and finding out what works well in an indoor environment. I've only ever used tap water, so I don't think that is too important in the scheme of things. More important is a potting mix that won't hold onto those salts in the tap water - a mix that allows you to flush the medium without worrying about overwatering (lack of oxygen in the root-zone). But now is not the best time to re-pot, even in warm L.A. To measure moisture, use a wooden kabob skewer. Stick it all the way into the container, wait 5 - 15 minutes, and slide it back out. If the skewer is dry, the medium is dry. So, see what you can discover with that method, and then we can discuss a good soil flushing. Josh

Rose Growth Rate

Hey Deborah, I've gotten a couple more roses now, bringing the total to close to 100 roses. I've lost some over the years but have a lot of my original collection that I posted about 3 years ago. For the most part they do get really big, a lot of them even bigger than the estimated sizes that are listed on sites like helpmefind.com (which I use a lot as a resource as far as mature rose sizes). I guess that has a lot to do with having a longer growing season than most (not as long as yours though!) I will say this as far as rose wisdom goes: I now know to pay attention to the growth habit of a rose before buying it. If the growth habit isn't upright and bushy (but not overly so, wider than tall doesn't work in a rose bed with a lot of roses in it), then I probably won't be interested in it. There are specific roses I have in areas where I want climbers. Trying to prune a climber as a bush doesn't really work. Also, it's not a huge deal if my roses don't go dormant in the winter, freezes don't kill them in this zone (there was even a huge cold snap this February in Texas and even though temperatures dropped to as low as 8 degrees and some of my roses died to the ground those were all own-root and came back from it really quickly). I was always really worried about the fact that my roses didn't ever go dormant even as colder weather was approaching. This information is obviously zone-dependent so if you do live a colder zone it's a good idea to hold back on pruning/fertilizing as colder weather approaches. Another thing is that it's very true that prepping the soil where you're planting the roses is far more important than how you feed them afterwards. For the most part I don't feed the roses all too frequently but the soil they're in had a lot of time put into it. The holes were dug deep and wide, and plenty of organic matter was mixed into them. Another thing that I don't think some people realize is that they should really let their roses do their own thing until they do reach their mature sizes or close to it. They want to grow to their mature size, pruning too much before that (other than removing dead growth) is probably more of a hindrance to the roses than anything. That goes back to one of the things I pointed out earlier, trying to control a rose's growth habit is a losing battle, and if you want to put a rose in an area that needs a smaller rose, don't keep chopping back one that wants to grow big. Find one with similar characteristics that has a smaller mature size instead. I don't really take pictures of my roses and I do have some weeding to do in my rose bed, but I will post back here with some pictures...eventually. I will definitely keep you in mind though! Just want to get the weeding done first, it looks shameful as-is!

Hey there Deb, I second the motion that you seem always so busy. I guess it passes time for you. I am glad that it was not ill health of Al or one of your family that kept you away. These darn computers are a pain, but so much fun communicating with friends. What would we do with-out them? Sounds as if your kids are doing wonderful, makes it alot easier when they are. Congrads on them. Guess it takes a while for summer to get to Canada huh. We were in Florida for a month seeing our boys and there were days it was so HOT, it was just unbearable to be out, air condition felt good tho. Well you keep taking care of your wonderful family and keep in touch.I will check later....HUGS Gabby
