Recommendations on a comfortable hospital bed?

My husband's best friend has ALS and just got a hospital bed. He said it is so uncomfortable, he can't possibly make do with it (and he's not a complainer). Do any of you have recommendations on a brand and model of hospital bed that your dear one found comfortable, or at least, acceptably so?

The bed is not the problem, the mattress is. His best bet is to invest in what is called an egg-crate pad that goes over the regular mattress. A medical supply store should be able to furnish a good one. I have seen them also in stores like WalMart.

If he can't find an egg crate....a regular foam pad that's about 2 inches thick will help. Call a nearby nursing home to see where they get theirs.

Hospital bed mattressess are just awful. Plastic coated, poorly made, no support. He needs to look for a mattress that will bend with the bed, he may have to try them out. Then he should get a memory foam mattress topper - 3' or 4" thick, or even a memory foam mattress, that might work very well. Very comfy and good support. He can get the mattress topper at Walmart, or on Ebay or Overstock. He can probably get a mattress from eBay or Overstock.

I just have the standard size pillows. I wash 2 at a time, just kind of curve them around the basket of the washer so there is one on each side. It keeps the load balanced. If you are only washing one pillow, maybe put a towel or two in with it. As far as wrinkles go, I am horrible about getting my loads out of the washer right away. I never leave them in long enough to start smelling, but definitely overnight sometimes and I've never had problems with wrinkles. Nothing has been misshapen either. If you're worried about a delicate item use the "hand-wash" cycle. I wash all of my hand wash only clothes in it and they are fine. I don't put them in the dryer though. I don't use HE detergent. I use natural laundry detergent which isn't specifically HE so you just use less. Even when I used regular detergent I didn't use HE, I just used less of the regular stuff. I hope you enjoy the machine, I just love mine. Don't think you made a mistake not getting an FL. I used my girlfriends for a couple of weeks and canceled the one I had on order. Everything came out wrinkled no matter how much fabric softener and how many dryer sheets I used. I didn't find a pen in my son's pocket and it ruined two pairs of shorts and a hoodie (ripped huge holes in them). And, to me anyway, the clothes just didn't feel clean. I can't explain it, they just didn't feel right. The only reason I'm sorry I don't have a FL is that I would like the extra "counter" space you can get using the top of the machine.

I have a slipcovered queen sleeper from Pottery Barn. It has a 5" mattress. There is no bar-in-the-back and it really is firm and comfy. We have had two guests with bad backs claim they actually felt better after sleeping on that bed. No lie. As a sofa, it is very comfortable. The slipcover looks schlumpy as a rule, but that's because it goes on differently than a "regular" slipcover I think. It would not be so nice in a living room, but for a den/guest room, it's fine with me...

Over the years, we have owned 3 Bernese Mountain dogs and now have a Leonberger. These are big dogs, and I can say, without any hesitation, that of all the numerous beds we have purchased, this bed from Fosters & Smith http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=20937&prodid=42174&catid=2179 is the best. Our Leo absolutely loves his bed and being the couch potato that he is, he spends hours a day in it. We actually purchased a second one to have in our bedroom after seeing how much he loved the one downstairs. The covers are removable, and I have washed ours many times without problems.

I can address some of your questions but not the fold-up part. The only thing I used on a sleeper that folded in with the mattress was a plush mattress pad that only sort of helped the comfort factor. All that to say we bought a queen sleeper mattress to put on a box spring that we already have because it was a super firm mattress (which my MIL prefers). It's the more infrequently used guest room but I still want it comfortable and needed to bump up the height of the mattress - it looked oddly low. So I bought this https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01MYN9K5B/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o08_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 and that bed is now super comfortable - you sink in a bit with the foam and then have firm support. It squishes down to nothing for shipping and then 'inflates' after opening so I'm sure it would squish enough to fold in with the mattress.

New hospital bed recently installed here and they returned and installed what they called a gel pad on the matress.

Its about a four inch thick memory foam type thing, I think. Certainly built a form fit hole where my dad lays - that indentation sticks, doesnt return to a fluffed up state during the few hours when he's not in it.

Makes the bed just a bit too high for his foot to naturally touch the ground when sitting, even at the beds lowest setting too.
I dont think there's any jelly in it, but I may be wronk.

I'm also bed-shopping. I can't seem to find any actually in set up in the medical supply houses to look at. On the Internet, I've seen a few brands, but also cautions not to buy "some flimsy homecare bed" and to get a real hospital quality (reconditioned) bed instead.

I know the mattress will have a lot to do with it -- But anyone know if the Homecare beds really are flimsy? And what brand/model would you say is or is not flimsy.

Mom wants to buy (not rent) a full-electric bed, and Medicare isn't really an issue.
