DuraSupreme Cabinets/Lumber Yard Cabinets?

I have asked about Ikea cabinets before and have heard that people are happy with them but that some change out the face. What about DuraSupreme Cabinets? Has any one used them? Pricing? I received literature from them b/c I really like the look of their work but no price info. Quality? Also, what about using a lumber yard (small town)? Based on experience do you get a better product for a similar price by using a small town shop? Curious as to options! Thanks.

We just sold a house with DuraSupreme cabinets. The house was 15 years old, I believe the cabinets were original, and they are still holding up very well. I don't know what the original owners paid for them, but I think the quality was very good.

I've priced out DuraSupreme and thought they were somewhat reasonable, though at least 50% more than what I priced out from Ikea.

One thing to keep in mind is that DuraSupreme tends to have a sale every few months, so if you aren't in a hurry you can wait until you can get a better deal.

nickels, i should mention that if u decide on some black walnuts be aware of juglone toxicity. they don't play well with others sometimes, especially apples. do a search on gw and school yourself on the subject. i have some black walnuts and will be planting transplants and nuts this fall. i'm trying to isolate them in their own "groves" and along the upperside of the road on my property so as to not present a problem to my other plantings. price gave u some good advice. i am thinking of what i should plant to " DIVERSIFY " my retirement trees as rosefolly pointed out in her post. i believe if one plants several species he/she protects themselves against disease or bugs which may decimate 1 specie of tree but not another. geraldo, glad to hear that black locust is doing well for u. am of the same mind just to plant some on a couple or 3 acres for never-ending firewood. haven't proceeded because i am a bit worried about them spreading "too much". if your ever in the need for a fence post i can't think of a better 1 than locust. those ol' steel things just rust away in a couple of centuries, when after the same time u can pull up the locust and bank some coals all night. kinda like multi-tasking ! never hurts to plant a gun stock or coffee table. if nothing else it should raise property values, at least to a savvy buyer. regards, wildlifeman

Plain and Fancy and Omega will be top tier quality, with the pricing that goes with it. Dynasty, Brookhaven. and Medallion are the next steps down and are upper mid grade lines. Dynasty gives a great bang for the buck and was often less expensive than Kemper in some things because of how they structured the alterations. Kemper is solidly mid grade and I did lots of nice projects in them when I sold them. Kraftmaid is the mid grade version of Merrilat, but beware, as they've splintered into about 3 different levels of quality and makes it horribly confusing. Their customer service also sucks. Aristokraft and Merrilat are builder grade. Few choices and not so great finishes. Great for a just married in an entry level house and low expectations, but even those kids have higher expectations these days. Apologies for the poor cell phone pics but there were no lights. Kemper kitchen. This section was right around 20K The other half of the kitchen, in Dynasty. It was around 38 K. This kitchen was big enough to be two kitchens. Each half could have been a total project.

You can use yellow poplar for dimensional lumber, but it checks a lot so it has to be graded first and finding someone to grade it can range anywhere from easy to impossible. You are supposed to have an engineer's approval before using it for post and beams. It is going to be tough to get decent flooring from a couple of trees. Poplar tends to bend as it dries, so a lot of people will use straps and posts to keep the poplar straight as it dries, this will give you straight boards but that will increase the checking. You can also increase the width to mill out the curve which is what a lot of people will do. You want to air dry poplar rather than kiln dry and I would say you need 9 months per inch of thickness but a year is better. The slower poplar dries the easier it is to keep straight and the less it will check. If you have access to a decent bandsaw mill it will definitely save you money, but will take a bit of time especially at first. If you are using an Alaskan mill it is far too much time to be worth the savings for cheap wood. As for the oak, it is oak. Oak will dry slower but is a great wood.

From my end I have in the past worked in "small town lumberyards". The ones I worked in both sold Kitchen Cabinets, several different lines and qualities. If you have a real lumberyard with good knowledgeable people staffing it then yes by all means look into purchasing cabinets from them. A lot of yards these days belong to buying groups and can get pretty dam good deals on many many products. However if the people that staff the yard are not knowledgeable then not so much.......

We installed Dura Supreme cabinets from their custom series 23 years ago and they have held up very well in both durability and looks. We only had some problems with a couple of our large drawers in our pantry cupboard. They used a plastic component to hold the railings which didn't last (probably my own fault for putting too much in those drawers). We were able to buy replacement parts but I would like to think they have improved on that in that past several years.
