My caregiving friends

I wanted to peek in again and say Hi, to all of you. It is so heartbreaking to see all of you still going through the "motions" of caregiving,but you all still have the loved ones with you. It is harder I must say, when it stops so abruptly, and your world changes so fast. However it is a "sweet relief", no matter how much you miss them and you can look back and feel good about the loving care you gave to them,with -out regrets.I miss Lara terribly, and I think she knew that we all loved her dearly. There were times, as normal when we regret things we said or did,but isn't that just normal? I know all of you will find "peace"...some day asI have and be better for it ,for what you have shared with your parents. I think of you all often and still read the posts .

Nora haven't heard or seen you lately so am wondering how your Mother is doing? Also Linda....how is your Mother? I know you are looking forward to the trip.

Kathy...sounds like ya'll have about had it. I hope you are feeling well quickly and won't have ot be put in the hospital. This must be so hard for your Dear Mother to understand what is happening. Prayers are sent your way. All of you "GET WELL SOON.....

Things here are so much better, and I rearranged my downstairs living quarters and just love it now. This is what I needed for so long. I feel like I have a new house. Even Dh loves it and we sat down there and watched the big screen tonight. We still talk often of Lara, and miss her so. I will continue to read and pray for all of you...until later.....Love Gabby

Hi Gabby, Good to read your post and so happy that things are going well for you and DH. I know you miss Lara...she certainly knew how much you loved her and how wonderful you have memories to cherish. Mom and Dad are doing o.k. Mom has had some not so good days...not walking without help..but she is swallowing good...has lost alot of weight. Dad has been busy outside with this nice weather...we have plans to get the yard mowed and seeded Monday. We had a great trip to Frankfort...DD and SIL bought a new home...4 bedrooms,2 baths...in a subdivison outside of town...they are so excited...will be moving the last of April...we took care of babies while they took care of business.LOL My youngest daughter has been here on spring break from teaching and we have been working real hard at organizing this house and getting rid of things I just don't need.LOL She has helped me so much....sure does feel good to have it done. Other daughter will be coming home from Bolivia Easter Sunday. She has had a wonderful trip. Spent 6 hours yesterday in the ER with DH. He has a kidney stone....this is his 3rd time....oh the pain he was in. Sent him home to pass it...and alot of pain meds. They say the pain is compared to having a baby...well he has had 3 so that is for all the pain I had for having his 3 girls.LOL Got to get him in to doctor tomorrow. Life is just busy...love knowing that spring is near and can be outside. Take care and so happy that things are going well for you. Blessings, Nora

Hi Gabby! Good to read your post. So glad things are working out for you and your hubby... I think you mentioned somewhere that he might have to go to a job and you were going with him in the RV. Did you get to do that???

Hi Nora... Good to hear from you, too! I pray God touches your DH is he's able to pass that stone today. Is it known what causes them??? Sorry to hear your precious mother is having some not so good days and is losing weight... I know it breaks all of your hearts. Thank God your dad is busy with his seeds and plants and getting ready for the garden. May God strengthen and comfort you as you carry on. God is truly blessing your daughters, Nora. I hope the OP did something because this situation sends up HUGE red flags everywhere. My folks are getting older and we have had some conversations about how they want things handled when they are too old to make decisions for themselves. I am grateful that they are willing to discuss this beforehand. I have read everything I can in order to acquaint myself with giving them suggestions about the best/worst ways they could go about this. Here is a good book I found at the library: "The Retirement nightmare-How to save yourself from your heirs and protectors". I am posting just one example of how you can have your life turned upside down if you don't make arrangements for a trustworthy family member (or friend) to be able to care for you before something happens. "In the first chapter of THE RETIREMENT NIGHTMARE, I give an example of this egregious fact drawn from the pages of The Los Angeles Times (November 1997). Glen Hawkins, 89, had bicycled two miles from his Orange County home in Leisure World, California, to confer with his investment counselor. Once there, he was told that the $380,000 in his account was no longer his to control. A professional conservator had been assigned to manage his financial and personal affairs. As Mr. Hawkins soon learned, he already owed almost $1,200 in conservator and attorney fees. How could this be? A social worker at Glen Hawkins' retirement community had filed a petition for an emergency conservatorship over Mr. Hawkins, claiming that he was too ill to attend the required hearing and too addled to understand the legal proceeding. Glen Hawkins had harmed no one, and he clearly was not a danger to himself. He had planned to live out the rest of his golden years in his Leisure World condominium. Unfortunately, his wish to be left alone had led him into dangerous new territory--territory that is made unsafe by the legal reality that each state in America feels free to intrude into the lives of its elderly in ways that would be unthinkable if the objects of its intrusion were young." Here is my story... My great grandma died from HD... my grandma also died from HD... my mom had HD and was in the middle stages when the cancer hit... I also have a uncle in the late stages in a nursing home... as for my mom's other siblings one died in a car accident in his 30's so we don't know and my mom's sister is in her late 50's with no symptoms and has chosen not to be tested... I am the 2nd oldest of 5 children and am the only one who as been tested... my younger brother was diagnosed with Schizophrenia several years ago he is about 15 years younger then me and I will be 41 next month... I really think he is HD positive but he doesn't want to be tested... for the last several years I have been having mild symptoms that were affecting my life and work but mom would get very upset every time I mentioned getting tested... she didn't want to know that she passed it on to any of her five children... so since I was able to compensate for the symptoms I just waited... when Mom got sick and was diagnosed with stage 4 lymphoma I and my step-dad took care of her (step dad has major health problems him self) I took care of her and my husband took care of me... but unfortunately the stress made my symptoms worsen and Mom was entering the end of her life so we waited until after we laid her to rest and I had the test by the time I had the test I had already been clinically diagnosed by the nuro at our center for HD... so we were pretty sure I had it but were still hopeful the test would show different So yes I have am being treated for this by a nero that is very experienced with HD... it was determined that all the stress from the year fight with my mom had progressed my symptoms I do use a walker and a wheelchair for long outings... and talking is okay but anything written is almost impossible and I choke on a lot of time... memory has been effected a little...but it is more to the effect of not knowing how to start things and stuff like that... Yes I have long term insurance from my job and I had been approved for SSDI before my husband passed Depression is just kicking my butt especially after my husband died... yes we knew I had HD but we were making the most out of it together and with him being gone I am totally lost... and my kids are so young I don't think I would have been able to do what there are at there age I feel blessed with them on the other hand I don't feel I am ready for a nursing home I still have my life to live and there is some much I still want to do... things my husband and I were planning on doing together well we could I apologize in advance if this is all over the place but I have a Hard time explaining things Thanks for listening God bless you all

I have lost my Mother, my best friend

My mother passed away April 13th 2022. she raised me and my sister, as a single mother. she worked 2 jobs to ptovide for us, but we took her for granted as children. When the mother of my 2 children passed away in 2016, my mother moved in with us. My mother helped raise my daughter(16 now) and my son(15 now) for almost a decade. My mother was more than just my best friend, she was my only friend. i have complex PTSD, and she was the only one that i trusted enough to talk about the war with… she went with me to the VA, when i had to. she gave me strength, she always seemed to understand things that other people either couldnt or didnt want to understand… my dog died about a month before my mother did… 2022 has taken a lot from me and my 2 children… they saw her as a mother, as much as me… i go from feeling numb to feeling deep sadness and loss… i don‘t want to give up, but i always needed her support. she died from cancer, after being on immunotherapy for 2 years… she suffered from many side effects, for most of her treatment. she became so thin near the end that it was painful to see her like that… i was with her until the end, and it may sound strange but i held her for some time after she died and just sobbed onto her… i talk to her still thst she is dead for months, but i still wake up thinking that she is alive… i beli my mother is in heaven, but selfishly i just want my mom back… i miss my only friend… i miss the only selfless person that i ever met… i feel so empty, and i did not think that id feel so lost… she gave me direction when i didnt know what to do… i hope this posts, it does give comfort to know that i am not a

I say prayers for everyone in that situation whenever I am reminded of them. Like I said, I was only at the blood center and the families and friends all touched my life. It was scary at times, especially when he had a fungal infection that was not responding to antibiotics. His flesh was coming off and they didn't know what it was until the culture came back. Once they got the right stuff treating it, everything turned around. That was the infection that delayed his transplant, but as I said, he is nearly ready to return home now and was able to drive out for the day on Thanksgiving. It was great. I wish I could be there in person so you could see and feel the hope. I'll send all I can by angel wings.

Hi there, all....Glad you are settling into your new life, Gabby. Guess your DH is moving on. Nora, you guys need to stay well. You have too much going on. Cannot believe the trip to Bolivia is almost at an end. Breezy...how's the house coming??? Take care y'all. Derry

Hi, Gabby...thanks for thinking of me. I've been busy with Mom's and my dentist/doctor appointments these past couple of weeks, and by the end of the day just want to see our sofa and the 'big screen', too! ;-) Mom is tolerating her Respiradone quite well, and altho' her hallucinations haven't completely disappeared, and the people on tv continue to talk directly to her and watch her, she's certainly settling down at night and we're all resting and sleeping through the nights now. Finally.What a difference that makes! But she walkes so stooped over now, so slowly...and she seems to be in her own little world much more often, talking about people who aren't here, or a party that didn't happen last night, or simply things I can't make out at all. Our doctor said this may certainly progress to the point where she may not recognize us, or may have to be prompted, and that's my greatest fear. But she continues to eat very well in spite of it all, but can't put on the weight she's lost, evidently.

I'm happy that you can take such comfort in the love and care you gave Lara, and that you and Al are at peace and moving on. Memories will always keep us company....
