8' x 8' - too small for tub and shower?

My master bath circa 1959 is 8'x8' and currently has a pocket door dividing the shower and toilet from a vanity and closet. I'm thinking of remmoving the wall and pocket door completely and putting a soaker tub ( 60" x30") under the window where the toilet is and moving the toilet to the closet

or moving a tub into the closet and leave the rest as they are. Would this work? The current shower interior is 29" x 34" and entirely too small, but I'm hoping an extra 4" of wall thickness and glass will help.

I don't know if it will work but I am sure that Sunshine Stone Inc. could supply the soaking bathtub you need if you are interested in stone bathtub too. You could have a look at their website www.stone-bathtubs.com.

lina, If you put a 5' tub all the way in the upper left corner, that leaves you 36" for your shower stall width. You can maximize that by installing the glass to the outside edge of the enclosure. If you make the shower 54-60" long, with the entrance on the wall perpendicular to the tub, you still have plenty of space for your toilet in lower right (check your code but here 30" is fine.)

If the shower's 2 walls are both glass, I don't think it would feel TOO cramped.

I'll try to find a sec to draw this out later and see if I have any other ideas :)

Thanks for all the replies! This is our first house, not our "forever" house. We are planning to finish the bath update so we can put our house on the market within the next 8-10 months. Then hopefully we'll be in our "forever" (or at least for a long time) house. :) The tub in the master is somekind of old, original cast iron tub. So I know it will be a pain in the butt for our GC to remove! I'm not much of a bath person except for occasionally, but my hubby likes to take them a little more than occasionally. Really this update is to make our home more attractive to potential buyers and hopefully secure us a fast sale. The master is one of the only things we haven't updated in our home, and we're not planning on spending a fortune. What I DON'T want to do is spend this amt of money period, and then wish I had done the tub. It's in really good condition, but it's so narrow and shallow. I wanted to potentially put in a deeper, wider one, but the walls are an issue. The non-plumbing side is my husband's closet, which is the same size as mine (not very big, but a "walk in," which is the plumbing side.) Moving a wall is an expense I'm not willing to undertake, so that's why I was wondering if we could hack into the wall just a bit where the tub is against my husband's closet. I havent talked about this with my GC yet. I'll do that this week. But y'all have seen that done?? Removing the tub and taking the time/money/effort to create a big walk-in shower is not what I wanted to do. We do have another tub in the hall bath, but not having a tub in the master might make someone not want our house. It's all about resale at this point! At the lowest remodel cost. :)

Well, phooey. I taped it out in the bathroom with blue tape last night and it looked like it would fit, but with too many nos, I'm back to the drawing board. Interesting thought, Vix. Right now we don't actually have a toilet room, so much as a separate toilet "area" (there's no door, and the closet takes up too much room to add a door), but it's on my agenda to create one. In our house, it's very necessary. I generally use that bathroom to try to FIND privacy, only to have 3 people (and sometimes the dog) follow me into the bathroom. I'm looking forward to having a door that locks and a fan so that I don't have two little people handing me the TP and asking whether I'm doing number 1 or 2 (oh, and the 1 year old likes to flush while I'm ON the pot; so I've got my own special cold water washlet), while DH decides that he absolutely has to shave and brush his teeth at that exact moment. Now if I take a hike to the guest bath on the other side of the house, all three just follow me AGAIN. Sometimes when I have insisted on locking the door in the guest bath (no way to do that with our LOUVERED -- why??? -- pocket door in the master), my one year old plopped down prostrate outside the door and cried until I open the door. For my W/C, I want to put in a LOUD fan; no whisper quiet for me. Maybe I'll even add a radio. :) The way I'm seeing it, I can either get rid of the long vanity altogether and live with a fairly small vanity, plus a tub and shower, I can skip the tub and live with the kids' bathroom on the third level as the only room with a tub, or we can bump out that weird corner jog, which would give us an additional 49'' X 27'' space -- enough to fit a 5X3 tub, 5X3 shower and keep the two vanities. But that sounds very expensive and will require carefully removing and replacing the siding to match the existing. DH's response to all this was "why do we need a tub?"

Now this is more like it: It's freestanding (though I don't care for this particular surround) and the backrest is what I find the ideal shape for two people side by side, with good back and shoulder support for both. Most tubs with this shape are like 5 feet wide which is not what I want; this one is just wide enough for two. The taper at the other end helps preserve water without getting too crowded, but is still wide and sloped enough to lean against when you want to face opposite directions. Still, it's the side by side configuration I like best. Two-person tubs where you face each other look great in pictures and in the showroom. Then you use one in real life only to find you have to SCREAM AT EACH OTHER to be heard over the roar of the jets. Although air jets may be a bit quieter than the water jets I've used. I could do without the huge ledge at the end of this tub though - what's that all about? I too can't find a tub that gets everything right.

I had a room that size, probably smaller, as child in two different homes. Cannot remember that they were small to me personally. I spent a lot of time outdoors playing and activities inside the rest of the house. If you have plenty of room throughout the rest of your home for toys and play, in my mind it would be functional. There are so many storage options for beds with under storage, putting dressers in closets and using lights and storage on walls. Being creative in a small room can be great fun. As a nursery it would be fine, enough room for essential furniture. A full size bed is approx. 54 X 72. You might want to lay tape over a rug or floor and imagine the options from there and also lay out furniture if you already have some. If I were a guest in the small room, it wouldn't be a complaint from me. Someone posted a wonderful loft that barely fit a full size bed. Used for guests and a cozy reading area. Love your bathroom. I followed your progress with interest and noticed you have a Kohler Archer tub. How much extra does the deck add to the 60 x30 dimensions ?
I would really like the tub under the window which extends 58" from the corner, so the shower glass could be at 59 or 60 inches. Right now, the space where toilet and shower are from wall to pocket door wall is 36" and that seems fine for the toilet, but the interior shower is 34" and enclosed by three tiled walls.

You can make the deck any size you want. If I were you I might consider extending the deck into the shower, as a ledge. Then the glass can sit on it right up to the tub.

OTOH, the more I consider it.... the Archer tub like I have - drop-in type- sort of needs some space around it, which might cramp your shower. The tightest I have mine is the long side, where there's only about 2" to the wall. Not easy to clean in there! What about doing one that has a tiled deck on the front side, but a flange on the other 3 sides, to maximize space in the shower? it would be the same look, but not require the additional 5"+ for deck around the drop-in.

When I sketched this roughly this AM, I removed the existing interior walls.

My shower is 36" x 60" interior floor space and it feels nice. I would think even 54" long would be fine. can you put the showerhead on the wall at the top of your drawing? Ours is on the long wall in the center, and I feel like the shower space would be more useable if it were on one of the short ends...

If you turned the toilet and had a smaller vanity, you could probably make the shower close to 3x5. Tub where closet is, surround encroaching into shower space slightly, 5 foot width of shower along upper wall with 3 foot space left for toilet facing down. Smaller vanity at front corner of room.

This would involve changing the window, even if you juggled the orientation of the above idea, I think.
