Helpful ideas for kneereplacement care?

This is coming very soon, I have never had anything like this before, and would like to have anyone that has give me some insight into what is involved, and what perhaps you did to help yourself, or a person after surgery, and how it worked out for ya.

Will be gratefully accepted, and appreciated, I am alone, and need some suggestions for real assistance for myself.

Basically, there are two kinds of patients for this. 1) Those that follow through with therapy and do what they're told and 2) those that don't.

Strongly suggest #1. It will hurt. You won't want to do it or be regular with it because it hurts. But, if you do, you will recover wonderfully. If you don't, you won't. They've gotten awfully good at these procedures but the patient has to do their part in order to achieve the end result everyone wants. If you're alone, you will need to have more discipline and will-power than if there's someone there to push you.

If the procedure is on your right leg, you won't be driving for a while. Be sure to make arrangements.

I had a few extra inches planned between my refrigerator and framed entranceway so that the refrigerator door could open fully. A panel was supposed to cover it. I never would have been able to do something really useful with the few inches as I didn't need a pull-out that big right next to my doorway. After the sheetrock was put up, we discovered a few more inches! I remembered that someone on this forum had a cabinet mounted sideways next to the refrigerator so that it opened out. I kind of used that idea but the cabinet opening is on the other side of the doorway. So now I've got a recessed custom built-in cabinet in my tiny mudroom. The cabinet depth is the door frame and "kitchen filler space". The filler space is covered by a small panel and I think of it as my reclaimed/found space! jayne

Help! I have no idea how to care for a succulent!

Hi Andrea. To me the other room with the direct sunlight sounds good. Succulents can get sunburnt though, especially if it's lived in a garage for a while :-D so needs to be acclimated to direct sunlight. Maybe couple of hours in direct sun first. Then increase by 2 hours every 2 or 3 days? I like Katherine's advice and she would mean to put the skewer in for 2 minutes then pull out to check. I would stick it right to the bottom to make sure it's all dry. Personally I would see what the pups, offshoots, do as you repot. If they seem to be falling of the mother plant I would pot them separately so I have 3 plants lol. But if they are seemingly hugging close to mama I would leave them be as I don't know about Sempervivums. If it was an Aloe vera i would seperate because I know those plants will grow. When repotting wash all the soil off the roots first, dry them gently with a paper towel, then let them dry off. I usually leave my succulents overnight. If the roots or bottom of the plant don't look good, post us some photos of the areas of concern before you repot. As I said, I don't know Sempervivums, so hopefully someone will post if any of my thoughts aren't good for them, but generally Succulents all need similar care. Hope it all goes well.

Dee, I agree with you about the CNA’s. They are the ones who have the most direct contact with the patients - bathing, bed changes , diaper changes, feeding, etc. My mom was extremely sick during the last three months of her life and I spent a lot of time in her room at the wonderful skilled nursing home and was so impressed with the care she was given by the CNA’s. They are low paid and appreciated the gift cards. I knew they were struggling with their own family shopping so I gave Amazon gift cards and Walmart cards because I knew that was where they did the bulk of their Christmas shopping. This is not about gifts, but I always had to stay with her when she was in the hospital as she was deaf and could not use the call button. I never called for help if it was something I could do for her. One time she was hospitalized and I was sitting in her room on a Sunday morning, reading the paper. A nurse or aid (don’t remember exactly) came in to give her her bath and asked me to leave the room, almost with an attitude. She was shocked when I told her I would be happy to give her bath since I was not doing anything useful. I had to keep reassuring her that I did not mind doing this and I know she was grateful as they seemed to be short staffed that morning.

We don't know where you are - general location or growing zone would help...they do not like hot & humid climate, and could look almost 'dead' in those conditions, but will survive. Growing in pots is np, just give them good drainage (pot with drainage hole and well draining mix). Amen to what asolo said above! My husband (60 years old) had a knee replacement and my mom (who is living with us) had one when she was 85 years old. It WILL be a real pain to do those exercises at first...but do them you must if you want your flexibility back. Physical therapy (will you go out for it or is someone able to come in to do home therapy?) is a must for about 6 weeks, then daily exercises will keep it flexible. Keep a bag of frozen peas in the freezer for icing if you don't have a velcro ice wrap for your knee. A cane or walker for the first few weeks (depending on Dr's preference and your mobility )
Someplace to sit where you can keep your knee straight.
--and hopefully a great physical therapist! Good luck to you...both of the replacements at our house have been successful...it takes time to heal !

If you live alone, it might be worthwhile to talk to your orthopaedic surgeons about a limited time in the rehab unit of the hospital or a short time in another rehab place. It is hard to deal with initially, but if you are good about the exercises, you can be back to normal, pretty quickly.
