1847 rogers bros silveware-- pattern/year?!?

I have recently acquired a set of "1847 Rogers Bros" silver plated flatware, though perhaps I should say "formerly" silver-plated since most of the silver has worn off.
I would like to know what year it was actually produced.

I am aware that just because 1847 is in the stamp does not mean that it was made in 1847. Many companies from centuries/decades past continue to stamp their products with the founding year of the company. On the other hand, I have also found numerous sites saying that in 1898 Rogers Bros joined the "International Silver" consortium and afterwards began stamping their products "1847 Rogers Bros IS" to reflect that affiliation.

Since mine lacks the "IS" that would seem to mean that it pre-dates 1847. (Again, I can cite sources to attest to this). Thus, ne would THINK it would not be difficult to find a matching pattern and and a subsequent date that this was produced, since I only have a window of 51 years to explore, right?

Wrong.

I have looked through hundreds of patterns and on every "1847 Rogers Bros" search that I can, and have come up empty on pattern and date -- which often go together, as many sites will list the pattern and the year it was produced.

I would be thrilled to know the pattern and the year my silverware was produced. HELP!

Zands - and that be would be cool if i had the Carabao, Phillipine SUPER mango, but mine look smaller don't you think? Not as elongated as in your picture... Ashley - maybe I'll call it Wilddog - my new mango hybrid! Anyone have contact info for the Federal Patent office ! (lol). But do let me know, with comments and pictures, how your Manila looks as it fruits - I'm super curious to see your results - maybe this summer???? Mango K - Manila is the ONLY mango Lowes/HD offers at their stores here in So Cal, so there's no chance for a mislabeling unless it happened at LaVerne's before it was shipped, cuz you can special order other varietals from them (but through Lowes), which I did (I think a Glenn and something else) but they were just crappy sticks so I got my money back.....but yeah anything's possible - I suppose I could look at the other varieties LaVerne offers (like 7-8 others) and go to the PIN viewer and see maybe if one of those mangos comes up looking close to mine.....hmmmm..... Oh...and thanks Harry for the steady faith in the Edwards Mango, which I just spent $160 on to get a big tree and plant. what a wonderful find! i have silverplate that I bought when still single - never used in all of these yrs!!! I'll be using them once I get moved. I also have my MIL (and her MILs) silver. I've used some of that. we used to eat pizza using linen napkins and silver forks (while watching tv). the forks were for what might fall off of the pizza on the way to our mouths -lol! . figured I might as well use it since I have it. I still have my original stainless too. I seem to have lost a number of pieces of that since I moved here. Maybe the mice carried 'em off. use it and rotate using it. see if you can find some archival quality bags. you also might find some 'silver cloth' at a fabric store or online to use to line those boxes. my MIL (probably from her MIL) had some in silver cloth 'bags' with a drawstring closing on them.

Thanks for sharing your beautiful doll collections with us Dream! I also really like your music box and beaded purses. I collected few things until recently altho have probably made up for it in the last 5 years since I retired. The only things I collected seriously were the cobalt blue Bing and Grondahl Christmas plates. It was an easy collection as it took little time. Started in 1965 and bot my last plate in 1994 as I knew I didn't want to display more than that. I have 35 plates because there is a larger one every 5 years altho I didn't get the 1965 large plate. When we had this house built I had plate rails built on 4 walls (3 in the great room and one in the breakfast) for these plates. I love plates and have since collected dozens of single plates I like and I often use them on the plate rails instead of the blue ones. I also collect a lot of other things, one of my favorites is silver things. I have some silver treasures from family but most are from auctions and yard sales. One of my recent finds is a set of 51 pieces of silver plated flatware for $5. It's Reflection pattern by 1847 Rogers Bros. so I thot it was a real find and great for tablescapes. I have dozens more pieces - lot of trays, plates, bowls, and wedding baskets which are fun to use in vignettes, for serving, or display. Tried to load some pics but Photobucket must be making some changes and I can't. I'll try later. I used to have a Shutterfly site with a lot of my pics and it was easy to post a slideshow or link but I found people were using them so I've made it private. Don't mind posting the occasional pic but don't like to give carte blanche for people to steal any/all of my pics. I tried a free watermark but it seems to change the color adversely. OA, thanks for the encouraging comments re: my treasures going to good homes. I've never really been concerned about my things when I am no longer here to worry about them. It's just stuff! I do hope some of the Grands will like old treasures tho as IMO they are more special than new stuff. Jeanne, I had never heard of a tomato spoon either and this one has such a cute cut out daffodil. If you are interested in seeing lots of silver it's on the link below. So many patterns and types of serving pieces. Nice you got your Mom's silver. I got my Mom's also but gave it away to one of my kids as at one time I actually thot one set of silver was enough and I have my wedding silver. That was before yard saling. ;-D Thanks Luvs, hope I don't look too fat in the pic, I'm trying not to gain anymore! LOL It was a good thing I had just bot a new pot of silver polish as I used about half of it with these finds. Karen, there are lots of yard sales where I don't find anything, even days I don't find a thing altho then DH may find something. We call it 'our little Saturday drive in the country' to rationalize the gas expense if we don't find anything! Here's more information on Rogers 1847 silver plate ware. the mark, 1847, was used over many years. The better age indicator is the pattern. The Roger's firm and many others were merged together.

Thanks for chiming in. I did not find a precise match but a link, from a link, from your link (not joking) led me to search "1847 Rogers Bros plain" -- the word "plain" bringing me a bit closer. Thanks again.

I have many, many pieces of silver-plate and think I have that pattern also. There is a wonderful soft cover book that has patterns in it, and I have found the best thing is to forget the maker and just go through the book, page by page matching the pattern(s) up. I will say that I doubt your pattern is before 1847

Thanks. I have looked up a few patterns without using "Rogers Bros" in the searches, but only a few. I will redouble those efforts. I don't think mine is "before 1847" either, but I do lean toward pre-1898, when the merger with International Silver occurred, if only because it seems Rogers Bros changed their stamps after that.

If you do a search using the words 1847 Rogers Bros Warranted 12 DWT, you will find more information. There are many listings on eBay. I never found the pattern name.

Thanks a lot! I did those searches and there are differing estimates on the age of the knives, but the majority leans toward late 1800s, with only a few saying "1900-1940." The forks are another story. There is little info on them. But as I said earlier, there ought to be something after "Bros" on the stamp if they date after 1898, so I think mine are among the company's early works. I am not even interested in their market value. I just like the fact that I am eating with something pre-20th century. YES, I use them: one fork, one knife. LOL
