Do you like your internal water dispenser?

I have ruled out ice/water on the door, but cannot decide if I want the internal water dispenser. Do you like yours? I'm on well water, so the filter isn't necessary from a taste standpoint. I have one friend who thinks hers is in a poor location (she has a JennAir FD). Thoughts?? Thanks!

We have an internal ice dispenser in our cabin refrigerator. The fridge is a Whirlpool with a top freezer. The dispenser doesn't seem to get in the way, (it's on the ceiling) but if you have a lot of people in your family using it all the time, it may warm up the fridge. I like it though, and the water is always icy cold, which is nice. It's better than having a pitcher of water to take up space...
I know what you mean, I dislike the door dispenser water/ice thing too.
Ice is either falling on the floor, or crud is building up. The ice warms up from opening the freezer door and then freezes together in chunks, then won't go through the door dispenser! This particular fridge has a very large ice tray/maker in the freezer part which is very easy to pull out to fill a lot of glasses, or to just reach in and grab some cubes. No waiting like in a door dispenser! We needed a lot of ice for summer days and it fit the bill.

I have a Kenmore elite french door fridge with internal filtered water.

I love the fridge and the water! the internal water is a definate space saving design on this fridge as the outside one takes up a bunch of room in the door. I don't find it cumbersome.

I once had a GE refrigerator with an internal water dispenser. To me, it is a flawed design. To get the water you stand in front of the fridge with the door half open....letting out all of the cold air. This lets the food warm up until it all cools down again. Every time you stand there to get water. It's insane. The temperature on a thermometer I had in there would show a warm up of 20 to 30 degrees while standing there. I quit using the internal water and no longer have that fridge. I now have no water dispenser on my Whirlpool. I don't mind putting ice cubes in my glass and going to the tap. It tastes much better, but we have wonderful well water. If we lived on a municipal system I would be using reverse osmosis.

i always hated the stupid water in the door things. the buttons never work well, so you have to snake your hand back behind the glass to push the button, plus if you like a big glass (which i do) you're SOL, cause it won't fit in the little nook. also, those drip trays underneath that are supposed to catch any water drips hold about a quarter oz. of water so they're basically useless and they always get all nasty and gross underneath them when you finally think to clean it. plus, i hate the aesthetic of looking at that box cut into the front of my fridge, and i hate how much space the icemaker part takes up right at chest height, which is premium freezer storage space. (i don't have one of the internal water dispenser units, though, so i can't speak to their functionality. they do seem far more appealing to the dreaded water in the door) oh, and i also hate the filter on the tap solution, since it's ugly and the water flow slows to a trickle when you activate it so you have to stand there for like three full minutes to grab a glass of (tepid) water. i also like my water cold (without the use of ice cubes) so they suck for that reason as well.

These comments are so helpful, thanks! I think now I am reassured we will be OK with the dispenser inside the fridge. I am surprised no one has mentioned that you are leaving the fridge door open, letting cold air escape, as you fill a glass with water, so I guess it's not much of an energy loss. Mountaineergirl, we aren't so young, but we "play-acted" at the store scooping ice, and we felt fine with it. Even have our ice scoop picked out (the Oxo, looks awesome) :)) Now to pick the fridge - Whirlpool vs. Kitchenaid (we know they are the same company) vs. Samsung vs. Electrolux. DH loves the look of the Electrolux, but the online reviews are appalling. All I ask is that the icemaker is in the freezer section, not the fridge section. But many french door fridges have the icemaker in the fridge section.

We have one and use it ALL the time. I don’t use the water though - it runs too slow for me. Last summer, though, we were having problems with the ice flapper - yes, that’s it’s real name. Apparently it wasn’t closing completely every time we got ice and was letting warm air leak up into the freezer. That caused some ice melting/fusing of cubes. So I finally called the repair guy and he got me a new flapper. Total charges about $110. (And then my electric bill went down cause my freezer had been running excessively! I should have noticed that, but I just didn’t. Duh.) My refrigerator is about 7 years old and it’s a Frigidaire.

I have a Jenn Air FD with the water dispenser in a funny place and it's awkward but not impossible. My husband uses it a lot. Personally, I don't use it except in the hot summer: instead I use the cold water from the tap (for which we have an undercabinet water filter).

Why did you rule out ice/water in the door. That was my best decision in that the kids have been drinking more ice water versus other drinks. The crushed and cubed option novelty has not worn off over one year.
