Self-Tanners

I have used several brands of self-tanners and have been allergic to all of them. I can use each of them a week or two and then they start make my legs itch. I've used Avon, Clinique and several others. I've tried Neutrogena once but it isn't very good and I can't find it anymore. Does anyone else have this problem? Any suggestions as to one that is hypoallergenic?

Beverly, check out a book by Paula Begoun called 'Don't go to the Cosmetics Counter Without Me'. She also has a website called cosmetics cops (link below). She analyzes cosmetics and stuff by ingredients and debunks a lot of the BS. She has discussed tanning lotions. Also has a hair care book. Great consumer advocate. She has her own skin care line.

Realize original post is a little old. Just wanted to let the self-tanners out there know about 2 products I have found to be very natural and not at all orange. Fake Bake and St. Tropeiz. Unfortunately I am allergic to Fake Bake. Both are mousse applications and being a self-tanner for over 15 years, I have it down pat. Use disposible latex gloves. Can pretty much do my entire body. You will notice a little brown in the water after your first shower. If you can, do the application and don't shower for 24 hours. Just makes it a little darker. I put the St. Tropeiz on and go out for the day. The color is brown when you apply it so you can see where you are putting it, not to miss any spots, but you can still go out once it drys because it looks very natural. Both products are very subtle. I have had problems with spray tans. Hollywood was a disaster with that booth thing and turning around, etc. I looked like an orange the next day, spotty just plain horrible and it took a week to scrub it off. Other personal spray tanning gave me trouble one year I kept getting a itchy rash and had to stop going, thus the St. Tropeiz. Not itchy at all after using it all the time this past summer. No time to lay in the sun for an even tan even if I wanted to possibly take the risk of skin cancer.

Not sure if this is the best but I have been very happy with just the Jergens Lotion Tanner. It has tanning color in it and it turns a nice color. (Do wash your hands!)

I quit coloring my hair over a year ago but 'touch up' a too obivious gray streak that developed when I was 18. I have a nice hair color, I don't know why I started coloring it in the first place (Someone probably dared me to do it) (Spell pedicure correctly 3 times: pedicure, Pedicure, PEDICURE!) I enjoy the maintenance when I have the time, maybe I'll have more time to pamper myself when all the boys are away at college next fall. I am upping my sunscreen protection and slowing replacing my makeup with products that include it. I can't think of anything I do every month on schedule anymore. When I colored my hair, I would call it "Mom,s Spa Night' While my hair was morphing, I would give myself a facial mask, use the epilady places where I needed to, and soak my nails for a manicure (no polish) Sometime I think just staying clean and trying not to sweat is a major beauty accomplishment for me. When I went through my "big hair' stage back in the 80's, keeping up a perm with bangs was tough. If anything, I'll apply just mascara and moisturiser for a day around the house. Cupajoe, I wonder if I had that kind of money in highschool, if I wouldn't have done the same thing. I was a narcissus little thing back then...had to keep the package looking good...

I don't know why but your bathing suit saga made me think of my honeymoon on Captiva. I found the best fitting two pieces at a little galleria shop. (DH despises shopping but he had patience that day. ;D ) It was a mix n' match deal (I love those, so rare, when tops and bottoms can be purchased individually by size). I found two patterns I loved, got a single top in each and two separate pairs of bottoms, one for when DH & I enjoyed the privacy of our rented house pool and a bit more conservative cut bottom for 'public' on the beach. Which in retrospect was silly because the beach was right out our front door and in a residential area so we often were alone. But I was thinking ahead for back home. ;) I still have those suits (colors/patterns had a lot of longevity and didn't scream 80's) tho I haven't worn them in ages. Any chance you can buy a suit on vacay? I bet you could find some nice ones.

Speaking of those cosmetics, I once heard a scientist talking about cosmetics that are supposed to something special to your skin. He said there is no such thing as some of the ingredients listed on the jar.

I have also used serveral self-tanners and have been allergic to them all. I have even tried hypoallergenic self-tanners but still get a horrible rash from them that can last a couple of weeks. Have you had any luck with self-tanners since posting your lost post?
I now think its the dha added in self-tanners. This it the main ingreient in all self-tanners. Anyway I have an appointment with the dermatoligist later this week to find out what I'm allergic to. Lets hope its not the dha or I wont be able to use any self-tanners apart from the bronzers that wash off or fade by the end of the day.

If I shave and then use them right after, I get a horrible rash. Using an electric razor helped me, waiting a day later, and using fake bake has given me the least amount of bumps and looks dark after one application. My fav so far.

I want to try this, but have to sell my Jet Tan first. If anyone decides to purchase it...please let me know.

Same for me!! I always break out in a hive type rash! there must be an ingedient I am allergic to. I have tried several brands and even the more expensive department store ones and get the same rash.I am thinking of trying a spray tan but i am afraid the same thing will happen.
I guess we have to use the sun but that is not good or else embrace being pale, which is no fun either!

I too have tried MANY self tanners and every single one of them makes my legs itch, which drives me crazy, so I don't use them. If anyone knows of one that doesn't have that effect, please let me know. I'm also going to check on the "DHA" ingredient mentioned above.
