How do you darken walnut flooring without using stain
Comments (1)You can use a dye. Post over in the Woodworkers forum. They know about this stuff. I once stripped some stain off of a Walnut table and was really surprized at how light the wood really was. Here is a link that might be useful: Wood Dye...See MoreMahogany Porch Refinish - Use ATO? Comments (3)Hi I just had my contractor do a quote for my mahogany deck. It has turned black from the buildup of penefin over the last few years. This guy wants to sand it also which I wasn't sure you could do with mahogany. But he says they won't use ATO because of the reformulation. Because the VOC's have been taken out it doesn't last at all like it used to. He is recommending a Ben Moore product called Arbour coat. It seems like I get a different answer from every person I ask. I personally don't like the dark color and want as clear a product as possible. How much is your quote? Mine is 3000$ for 10x10 deck with lots of stairs and railings....See MoreMahogany bridge refinishing
Comments (3)Use an orange stripper(non toxic). You can use a bronze or brass brush to get finish out of grooves---an iron/steel brush might leave rust marks. Be very careful when brushing, the stripper can burn skin and you do not want it in eyes. Then use the product I linked below---they make a clear version as well as the different color stains. Comments (2)You may be able to do this with a glaze coat. A glaze is a finish with heavy pigment and light binder It's made to between coats of finish. You'll need to make sure your top coat is compatible with whatever finish is on there now. Clean it well, since it's probably full of body oils. Use dish detergent such as Dawn, and water. When dry wipe with a cloth dampened in mineral spirits or naphtha. The first removes the water-soluble soil and the second the oil-based soiling. The rough it up with a bit of Scotch-Brite pad. (Don't use steel wool). Apply the glaze and let it dry 24 hours. Then apply your top coat of finish. Orange is neutralized by blue. Some people use gel stains as glazes, but you are unlikely to find a blue gel stain. So you will probably have to go to a professional-level paint store and have them custom mix a blue glaze from a glaze base. When I had a week-long refinishing class, one of the other students had a table that was too orange. I knew this would work in theory, but was amazed at watching it really happen before my eyes. Worst case is it doesn't work to your satisfaction and you have just lost a little time and effort. Then you can proceed with the stripping If it does work, you've saved yourself a lot of work stripping....See Morecentralcacyclist
