Reinforcing the ceiling for a punching bag & ceiling swing/chair?

We will have a punching bag on our second floor. It just occurred to me that I haven't discussed this with the architect or GC. What kind of reinforcement (if any) is needed on the ceiling? Also, we may decide to put in a ceiling mounted chair in the playroom on the first floor. Same question for that.

Our GC had a wonderful exercise for us. His assignment even before we met was to have DH & me write out our top 20 items/ideas for the house (in order of importance). We did this seperarately w/o knowing each other's top 20. We then brought this list to GC on our first meeting. This enabled him to get the big picture. We also took these lists to the architect. Along with this list, was a photo of what we desired & a layout we thought we liked. As the process has developed, all of our smaller, nitpicky items have come out. GC has appreciated the thought process that I've put into it all. He said it has made everything move smoothly. In the end, I will have less daily choices to make. Although I did SO much research prior to all of our meetings, I have welcomed GC's ideas & knowledge, as well. Afterall, we are hiring him for his skills, knowledge, & expertise. He has been doing this 30+ years & I have only just recently begun this process. I definitely would not go into this seeming like a total know-it-all or you will make GC's life quite unpleasant. Also, in all honesty, about 90% of our desires for our home, GC had already planned for, so I would really be looking for the best GC you can find.

"It could be a simple explanation that an untrained worker nailed off that area and his lack of skill ended tragically, but 60 years late. " The nail spacing does appear rather large. Keep in mind tat they are probably just plain carbon steel nails, and thin ones at that. Not ring shank, or anything special about them. Years of slow rusting ad wood shrinkage coupled with an inadequate nailing schedule and walking on a floor above may well have contributed. Be glad no one as injured. A neighbor had a section of three coat ceiling (on wood lath) fall on their child and break the 5 year old's collarbone. Child services then got involved. I would at least pull at some of the plaster at the edges of what fell to try and assess how solid it is. You can sink drywall screws if their is any question about the rest staying up. The area that fell can be repaired with one aer of drywall by sistering the joists with 2x2 pieces to make the face of the new drywall come out flush woth te rest of the ceiling. Two layers of to match the thickness would get you back some of the sound absorbing qualities of the old ceiling through more mass. While a single thicker layer could also be installed to match it is harder to get and just about requires a drywall lift to install. The thick sheets get VERY heavy to move around, transport, and hold in place for screw fastening.

As requested earlier from Davidro who wanted to understand traffic flow, below is a whole house "sketch" which shows our first floor layout (upstairs is only a loft) and second diagram is where I'm at with regard to kitchen design after input from you guys and after Ikea consultant/designer who was at my home today gave as far as cabinets fitting. Also, from the earlier discussion, I had some confusion about whether I could relocate the washer/dryer to the hall. The contractor who visited today didn't have any problems with the relocation. It helps a lot that our foundation is "pier and beam". Moving plumbing around is a whole lot easier. New location of washer/dryer may be a bit claustrophobic in the hall way outside the bathroom but I only do laundry a couple times a week for short spurts. I'm in the kitchen a whole lot longer and since the relocation of washer/dryer is the only thing keeping me from having the kitchen layout I REALLY wanted from the beginning (barring the fact the pantry has gotten quite a bit smaller), I am a happy camper. I'm going to lie low a while and get our bathroom done and maybe a roof before I come back with any updates on the kitchen. And for anyone who is in doubt, the Ikea prices for all cabinets is half of what price was quoted for Innermost cabinets by Home Depot. And the Ikea quote includes several of the appliances though I'm not sure yet if that is how I will really go. But cabinets -yes - their prices are too good to pass up. The money we save can go for the bathroom we're getting that has a curbless shower, and several other expensive details which Ikea can't help us out on. I'll still be listening but hopefully everyone can see the aisles around the island are considerably wider (maybe even too wide with my feet problems). If I need more pantry space, I'm fairly sure that several of the drawers in the main part of the kitchen will not all be used so I can use them for pantry space spill over if there is any. THANKS AGAIN (though I will definitely be back - still need to pick out countertop/backsplash/flooring/hoodOverCooktop and make decisions about appliances..) And since I haven't marked it well, let me explain that there are upper cabinets on either side of the cooktop and also to the left of the fridge. No uppercabinets on the sides of the "cleanup sink" with the large 6 foot wide window. Think I may wait until kitchen is done and probably install some open floating shelves on either side of cleanup sink - more for esthetics than function but I think I can wait until the last minute for that. (Maybe even some art work...)

It's over a year later, but I thought I'd update everyone on how we feel about our kitchen. We continue to love it. The only things we'd change: practically nothing! The design and flow has worked well for us through the last 12 months. The only things my husband and I have ever-so-briefly mentioned in the past has been the addition of a potfiller at the stove (but my husband, the cook, said it isn't necessary even though he has to take 5 steps from sink to stove), and having the garbage disposal be on the LEFT drain of the sink rather than right (which is my left-handed self being picky about how I do the dishes). We had some brief concern about the dark floors, but they are still lovely and comfortable. We do have to sweep and clean them quite often, but that's okay. That's what the kids are for, right? *lol* HollyRu - as for your question as to what's to the right of the sink, we have a 12" cabinet, our black dishwasher, and then the turn to the winerack. The second rack you see is actually a reflection of the real one on the black dishwasher. When the dishwasher is open, it's a breeze to put away the bowls and plates, which go in the two large dish drawers visible on the same photo.

I don't know anything about reinforcements, but we hung a similar swing from the rafters of our unfinished basement. It wasn't intended to spin, but my daughter apparently could not help herself. She spun it around and it eventually unscrewed the very big screw from the wood, which then fell down on her head, along with dropping the swing on the floor. (Bad parenting!!)

So my suggestion is to make sure you either have a way to bolt the swing or have a swiveling hook for it.

Laura12, I haven't seen it IRL. I am a hammock lover, though & want my kids to grow up with them, as I did. We will have a couple of hammocks on the lanais, as well. I will let you know what we end up doing.

Supporting these kid's toys isn't dependent on the ceiling. It's dependent on finding and connecting with the structural elements to which the ceiling is attached. What's supporting the ceiling depends on the number of floors in your house and where your kid's room is located.

For maximum safety, it's probably best to attach the support to at least two structural members above the ceiling using blocking or bridging to connect the two members. If the house is already built, that means either removing a portion of the ceiling to install the necessary blocking at the desired location, or, alternatively adding the blocking on the face of the existing ceiling and connecting it to at least two joists, rafters or trusses (whatever structural elements are above the ceiling). I'd recommend at least 2" penetration into the joists, rafters or trusses. Even with this, good parenting suggests checking regularly on the connections to ensure they remain sound and safe.

Why would you need to tell a builder or an architect how to provide support for this equipment? Just tell them how much weight will be supported and where you want to hang it.

Some of this equipment might come with an appropriate hanger so choose the equipment first.

Because some things like punching bags (especially speed bags) are not solely a weight issue.

The fact that the weight is a hanging load and can move produces a lot of other forces besides dead weight.

I hope the designer and builder don't need a homeowner to tell them how to install equipment with such small easily determined loads. If the structure above can support a floor or roof load it can easily support a speedbag or a person without reinforcement.

The issue should be the connection to the structure and that should be addressed by the manufacturer so pick the equipment out and give the installation information to the professionals.
