This is a quote from Penn State Extension that seems more apropos re. baking in jars. If breads or cakes are baked in canning jars, seal them after they are completely cooled so that a vacuum seal is not created. This will prevent the growth of Clostridium botulinum. Also, immediately refrigerate. Refrigeration temperatures will prevent the growth of other harmful bacteria that can grow at the water activity and pH typically found in these types of products. The shelf-life in the refrigerator is several weeks. Additionally, there is always the risk of having the jar break in the oven or upon removal from the oven. Also, the jars can be very hot so use oven mitts to prevent burns. â¨â¨from: Dr. Angie Fraser, Food Safety Specialist, North Carolina State University. Some of that is clearly stating the obvious, but I do know there have been a number of complaints about the quality of the finished product (i.e. insufficiently baked at the center and over-baked at the edges), especially if the jar is a quart, rather than a half-pint or pint. But it seems if someone wants to bake in jars and is willing to risk the possibility of reduced consistency/quality and perhaps breakage, that's up to them. I can guess that cupcakes or mini-yeast loaves (like little brioche) baked in half-pints would be cute. However, I wouldn't do it because I don't want to stress the glass, risking future breakage during canning, and because I have certain pans I know produce really reliable results for me. I think he got the love & respect of the old things from me, LOL. I'm thinking of letting him have my grandmother's quilt to put at the end of the bed. I know she made it prior to 1939 but I don't know exactly when. I hadn't thought of the depression so it makes sense to me now that I think about it. ;-) If I post a photo of the sleigh bed, could you give me your opinion on that too? I am resurrecting this old post because I just discovered it while researching some old chairs that were given to my husband and I recently. They are IDENTICAL to the chairs in the original inquiry on this post. My husband and I know absolutely nothing about furniture, but didn't think they were terribly old, so we have started to refinish them. In doing so, we have discovered that they appear to be constructed of tulip poplar (Liriodendron tulipifera). They are very lightweight and pretty under the finish. So, I'm just wondering if anyone has any additional information about these particular chairs. Surely they were mass produced? We're curious about where and by whom? Thanks! Botnerd

Whatcha talkin' about - I just picked up a cabinet that was still in fairly good shape, that I thought that I could use. Then it appeared that it could do much more yeoman service in my landlord's shop. He gives me space in sheds and barn, plus space for a large garden, and replaced a pump in the barn that he really didn't need, plus added some pipes to irrigate it ... and cultivates it with his tiller. He wanted some space there, and hadn't planted anything by two or three weeks ago ... so I transplanted some of my tomatoes in his area, and some of those squash that had grown up in the space between the rows, also planted some onion, carrot and melon seeds. He invites me to pick asparagus in his garden. He's a nice guy, as I said: best landlord that I've had in years. ole joyful
