Rain Shower Head

I plan to purchase a Grohe 6" O.D. rain shower head for my new 48"x32" shower. It will be in the center of the ceiling. My concern is the lenght of the extension arm. The choice is 6",9" or 12". In my opinion the 6" gives it a finished look. What are the purposes of the different lenghts. Less pressure? More pressure? Different water flow? Is the shower head supposed to be a certain height above your head? Any help would be appreciated.

The length of the arm has nothing to do with pressure or water flow. It is purely personal preference.

There is no "right" height. Obviously, every person isn't the same height, so whatever height you put it will be different distances away depending on the person.

Also, the ceiling height plays a big role. If you have 8 foot ceilings, the 6" might be perfect. If you have 9 foot ceilings, that would be a really high shower head!

We are getting a rain shower and the lady at the fixture store said most people do 12-18 inches above the top of your head. She said you might not get the desired effect of a gentle steady shower at a lower or higher level...for what it is worth.

We are on a well and we have a Grohe Relexa Five with the head tilted from the arm on the wall. It's working really well for us - no garden hose effect. No problem rinsing hair. Of course, we don't have as much water pressure as someone with city water.
