Higher end range + downdraft options? I really hate island hoods...
Comments (21)Thanks, all, for the passionate comments. As I mentioned in the original post, I think we are already too far down the road of "range goes in island" as the room is still down to studs, but electrical and plumbing are in and we're poised to begin drywalling in the next 2 weeks. However, our plan is below in case anyone has ideas... this is becoming my biggest regret already! Note that we are planning a range (not a cooktop) in the island and an oven + micro in the wall (not double ovens). We arrived at this because we dislike under-the-counter micros and don't have a ton of upper space in this kitchen. There is no view, but the island overlooks a big open floorplan sitting area and dining room, which opens to backyard with french doors. The window over the sink overlooks a sunny front yard. It is not a "show kitchen" as we are regular and adventurous cooks. But... I would caveat to say that we intend to sell the place within 3-5 years so want to make sure we don't make poor choices for resale. It is not intended to be a "forever home". Plan (That's a desk in the lower-right corner) Note massive pantry bank in lower right of this view is now a short run of uppers and lowers....See MoreRange hood recommendation for 36" Bluestar range
Comments (13)Not sure if you’ve already selected your range hood. I do a lot of Asian wok cooking too, and that’s one of the main reasons we bought BlueStar 36” RNB (just stainless steel) last month. With the appliance store salesperson’s recommendations, we paired it with Best by Broan PK22 insert pro-range hood - 1200cfm on internal blower. It worked fantastic and low noise on low and medium settings, the highest setting is kinda loud but i can live with it as i can still keep the same tv volume in another room. We had our hvac contractor to put in the new 10” duct to the exterior of the house and a makeup air component as part of our county requirement. We did consider Bluestar range hoods to pair with but we didnt see the need to spend that extra $ since we can still achieve great results with this particular Broan hood which is less than half the price of a BS one. For us, the installation costs adds up too, especially we‘ve never had an external duct in the kitchen as we use to have a microwave hood....See MoreRange top sits higher than countertop
Comments (10)It appears they used the support cleat method and the cleats or braces are too high. It should definitely sit right on the countertop with either method. Should be an easy fix. From the installation directions: The rangetop is designed to hang from the countertop by its flanges. The countertop however must be strong enough to support this rangetop. It may be necessary to add a supporting cleat along each side or a 2 x 4 corner brace (see page 10). Another alternative would be to construct a deck to set the rangetop on. If that's not the case, perhaps the opening is too small and it is sitting on something incorrectly....See MoreZ line range hood - more than TWICE the decibels - why so loud?
Comments (8)A few thoughts... - Many noise apps are not very accurate. Most accurate we've found in our lab is Decibel X on an iPhone 8 or newer. Make sure you are using dB(a), not dB(c/z), are 1m from the hood, etc. More on how to accurately measure: https://www.houzz.com/discussions/6040827/range-hood-noise-project - Duct and blower should be mounted with strap and NOT ever come in contact with framing or other elements that transmit vibration noise and effectively turn your house in to a giant speaker. - Yes on duct possibly being too small. If so then this will result in increased noise. - Bends/Turns (w/ proper sized duct) are actually good for noise reduction even if not so good for overall performance. - Distance to blower is good for noise reduction. - A duct silencer between the hood and blower can be very helpful. - 1200 CFM is a lot for such a small hood. You likely have a lot of noise just trying to pull a lot of air through a small baffle. - Baffle design has a big impact on noise levels. Many consumer hoods do poorly on this. How loud is it w/ baffles removed? - Your hood lacks sufficient containment volume which requires you to operate at much higher CFM's (and thus greater noise) for the same (or worse) effectiveness at effluent removal. - Blower may be out of balance. Not necessarily noise related: - Your hood looks the same width as your range. The aperture/opening s/b at least 6" wider than your range and ideally at least 27" deep....See Moremarcolo
