Melanie on 'This Old House'... Feedback?
Comments (29)Hello Scott: You are too kind and I really appreciate the props and your mistaken impression of me as a genius...idiot savant, maybe, genius, no. It's also been a pleasure reading your posts and I always enjoy your occasional lessons on Japanese garden design. As to the wellspring of my ideas, its neither of the two people you suggested, though in my secret underground lair, consulting with my Number 2 man (his name...Number 2) has proven to be illuminating on occasion. Seriously, if it weren't for Asha's musings, I wouldn't have come up with that plan at all. The "genius" as you call it is self-taught from my seemingly endless reading of gardening/design books, and tours of gardens all over the world. Scott, one thing I neglected to mention is that if you have any ideas, additions/subtractions or suggestions, please share them. And Melanie, no worries...I used Corel Draw to generate the plan, which is a vector-based drawing program similar to Adobe Illustrator. Perhaps we should talk in real time and we can get you up to speed on scanners and available software. Stay warm! spectre...See MoreAdding new windows without removing the old
Comments (52)The temperature of the ambient air outside and the ambient air inside is not the issue. The heat entering the outside window will not be free to dissipate and will compound between the two windows, increasing in intensity. You would have to open the top of the inside window for 2 reasons. 1)Your outside window is single hung and won't open on top. 2)Hot air will rise and intensify in the upper portion between the two windows, so opening the bottom will not alleviate the problem. Opening the top sash of the inside window will let intensified heated air into the house, in effect, heating the house in the summertime. To not have quite this problem, you would have to have LowE glass on the outside window, which would reflect heat away from the window. If you have LowE on the inside window, the heat is passing through the old window but not the new one, building up between the two. I know what you were trying to achieve in theory, but the science of fenestration is against you. I hope your luck is better than some of us anticipate....See MoreRestoring old and neglected apricot trees. Help!
Comments (17)monibucky I don't know if they make a fruit picking pole, but what I use is a swimming pool telescoping skimmer pole. I tape a milk jug to the end of it. I cut the top of the jug and make a vie cut to catch the stem. Then when the fruit is in the jug with the stem in the vie you can use the pole to pick it and the fruit falls into the jug. You can just keep on going till the jug is full or your arm gets tired. If the plastic isn't strong enough you can use a vegetable can and do the same thing. I pick all my best apples this way at the top of the tree. I hope this helps some of you out....See MoreScion wood list 2017 for trade
Comments (19)Hi Matt. I'll try another e-mail. Getting late in the season for cutting with days going 5-8 degrees above zero but we do still have 2 feet of snow on the ground so while the maple syrup is starting to run I think the fruit trees are probably still sleeping. Some of my varieties I might not have wood to spare right now as they are pretty young and I have sent out scions already to several people so far but ask and I will see what I can do. Worst case I will get it to you next year. For cherries all I have is the UofS sour cherries. Romeo, Juliet, Cupid, Crimson Passion....See MoreThunderstick
