Hi -
I've been taking 1000 mcg. of Biotin daily for several weeks and have noticed a difference. The crown area of my scalp is so thin to the point that you can see through to my scalp if my hair isn't worn curly on top or blown to the side. My hair has started growing in the front where I had virtually no hair. I've 46 and female and just disgusted with this problem. I've also used the generic form of Minoxidil. The only thing is really does is make my hair grow, but doesn't seem to fill in the areas where I have hair loss. I really hope my info has helped. Let me know how it goes. I feel for you. Best of luck, Julie

Thanks, jewel. WIll try the Biotin. Was really disgusted with Dr. I saw. Said" its not stress, its just one of those things. Can't help you"
Why do they make the big bucks!?!?! I have been watching this since I was about 45, am now 50, and I'm getting scared. It helped that to begin with I had extremely thick hair, so its just now getting to the noticable stage.

Sorry it took me so long to get back to you guys...my membership ran out and then PayPal wasn't working! I got my hair cut on Tuesday. I went to a woman recommended by a friend (she's been going to this hair dresser for years and she cuts my friend's daughter's hair which is quite similar to mine). I went with a picture and showed her what I'd be interested in. She washed my hair, looked at the picture, and told me that it would be a bad idea for me to go so short because of the way my hair curls and the amount I have (too much!). She said that cutting it short would only result in a balloon of hair around my head. I also asked her about thinning it out and she said that while it would be okay to thin out underneath the bottom, thinning out the top would be a bad idea because when it started to grow back, I'd end up with little springies around my head, like a fuzzy halo. So, she cleaned up the ends, re-cut my layers, and left it "long," which is quite a bit shorter than it was, so I'm trying to get used to doing it again! So, I was disappointed that I didn't end up with the picture I had in my mind, but I am EXTREMELY happy and impressed that the hairdress was honest with me and knowledgable enough to have an idea about what will and will not work. I'll probably go back to her, which is saying a lot! Thanks again for all your input; you guys are great! Chan

Sorry, party-pooper here. I also have noticed thinning hair, but because of the side effects would not use rogaine type products. Vitamins biotin, B complex and c are great. Also gelatin and increased protein work without toxicity. See Rogaine side effects copied from wiki: "Side effects Common side effects of minoxidil include burning or irritation of the eye, itching, redness or irritation at the treated area, as well as unwanted hair growth elsewhere on the body. Users should stop treatment and seek medical attention right away if they experience any of the following serious side effects: Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); chest pain; dizziness; fainting; fast heartbeat; sudden, unexplained weight gain; swollen hands or feet.[8] Alcohol and propylene glycol present in some topical preparations may dry the scalp, resulting in dandruff and contact dermatitis.[9] Some formulations of minoxidil substitute lipid Nanosomes in order to reduce contact dermatitis from the alcohol and propylene glycol vehicle.[10][11] Paradoxically, hair loss is a common side effect of minoxidil treatment.[12] Manufacturers note that minoxidil-induced hair loss is a common side effect and describe the process as "shedding". Although this phenomenon demonstrates that minoxidil is indeed affecting hair follicles, manufacturers offer no guarantee that the new hair loss will be replaced with hair growth. The speculated reason for this shedding is the encouragement of hairs already in the telogen phase to shed early. Side effects of oral minoxidil may include swelling of the face and extremities, rapid and irregular heartbeat, lightheadedness, cardiac lesions, and focal necrosis of the papillary muscle and subendocardial areas of the left ventricle.[13] There have been cases of allergic reactions to minoxidil or the non-active ingredient propylene glycol, which is found in some topical minoxidil formulations. Pseudoacromegaly is an extremely rare side effect reported with large doses of oral minoxidil.[14] Another side effect of minoxidil is that of dry skin, dark under-eye circles, and skin redness. Studies have shown that minoxidil can cause collagen depletion as it is a lysyl hydroxylase inhibitor, an enzyme which is key in collagen production.[15] Minoxidil is highly toxic to cats and may cause death with just inadvertent skin contact.[16][17"

thinning hair...

I'm in my 70s with normal loss of hair volume. Last year I decided not to go through the whole routine of wash, blow dry, curl, some color etc. Go natural now without any of this and only wash my hair twice a week, a recommendation to retain natural oils . I do have natural waves and fine hair at just above my shoulders. Sometimes use a gel for fulness, always use hair spray, but not at the level once was. Of course my hair style will always be the same now. Looking back at 55+ yrs of every day and all the chemicals, it is a wonder there is any hair left. At my age there isn't a feeling of need to go through that again. Plus I see little difference in what was, than what style is now. Always disliked my curly hair and did everything possible to straighten it. If I ever needed a wig, I would do it. A fun adventure for something different. The market gets better every day and who knows what is on the horizon for hair styling, plus options for new growth.

I read that if you tug on the hairs that you have in any particular place on your head for 2 minutes tugging forward and backward it helps blood to get to the hair follicles which is increases thickening and growth. Maybe it dislodges or displaces testosterone receptors at least for men. I think women's thinning hair is from a different reason or hormone? Maybe I will try that for my scant eyebrows that I've always had. I used a whole bunch of things for hair growth inadvertently when I was seeking help for my migraines. I use MSM for my leg cramps and my hair is more plentiful. When I was taking a ton of flax oil which was one of the best things for my migraines my hair started growing much more. MSM makes it a bit thicker flax oil made it grow and Sprout like crazy but remain thin. I'll have to look into collagen. I'm glad to hear the Rogaine now works for older women. Best of luck :-).

I too asked my internist who said my hair loss is due to stress. I've also asked a dermatologist who said I have androgenetic alopecia. My siblings and my mom do not have this problem at all. I'm so frustrated and know exactly how you feel. Please let me know if the biotin helps you at all. At least it's cheap. Good luck.

Did the Dr. check your thyroid level? Low thyroid causes thinning hair right above the forehead and on the eyebrows, cold hands & feet, dry skin, weight gain and fatigue. Thyroid hormone replacement pills can reverse all of that.

Biotin helps hair and nails grow faster and stronger. I take 500 mcg daily and have noticed much improvement.

I started taking a multi-B and C vitamin about 20 years ago. My hair and nails grow very fast.

The vitamin will make your hair grow faster and maybe thicker but not more of it. I've used Follicure shampoo and conditioner and I had a lot of new hair growing in. This was great until my hairdresser used dye twice in one day and noticed a lot of hair was gone again. She did make the comment when I came in that my hair looked fuller. She was mum when I left.

NIOXIN,NIOXIN,NIOXIN!
My hair isnt thinning, but very fine.Nioxin is meant for thinning, fine or flat hair.
It's a 3 step system shampoo,conditioner,and scalp treatment/spray.
My hair has never,EVER been this thick in my whole life! Not only does it plump hair from the inside,it puts your scalp in optimum conditions to grow hair with natural ingrediants like BIOTIN,rosemary and mint that stimulate the scalp.
I have been using it about a two months now,and my hair has grown alot!
I also take biotin vitamins, soy (anything with protein helps),vitamin C and fish oil that contains omega fatty acids that are good for hair.
I hope this helps! Ladies, try the Nioxin,it is wonderful!

There are several studies which indicate that soy has very good effect on thinning hair. It has alot of protein, and has isoflavones which mock that of estrogen. So if thinning is due to a hormonal imbalance,it could certainly help.
