Need help on skin

I have large pores on my nose - what do you use, if you have this problem? Thanks!

I was going to ask the same thing, only my facial pores are large all over. I was of the mind that once the pores were large, there wasn't much, short of micro brasion, that would restore the skin and close up the pores. I hope someone has a good answer for us.
I very seldom use any foundation.

Wow! Am I glad to see I'm not the only one with this problem! Now, hopefully someone out there will have an idea for us.

My husband uses the Neutrogena Hand Cream in tubes. You may see advertising about it being the "kind fishermen use". It is an extremely heavy cream, which he applies heavily before work. It soaks into his skin during the drive to his job, kind of leaves a coating on skin for the day. Husband works outside all day, seldom wears gloves in his farrier work. This is the ONLY cream he has used that stays working all day. Seems to only need it applied that once in the AM. He tried ALL the others, Corn Huskers, Bag Balm, along with a number of home remedies like straight lanolin and rendered goose grease. The skin still would split and crack despite repeated applications. I have also had great luck with this Neutrogena cream, but usually put it on before bed, because I don't have the time to let it soak in during the morning. It is pretty wonderful stuff, sure has helped both of us in not getting the deep skin cracks of the past. I do wear my gloves!! While I consider all of their products wonderful, the handcream in the tube, only comes in the tube. None of their other handcreams, lotions, are the same heavy mix as the tube stuff. The soothing lotion is close, but not as stiff and heavy. I would give the handcream a few days or week, to show the best effects if his hands are so very bad. I would have him put it on a couple times a day, when he can let it soak in. It will make his hands slippery! Start with a little dab, tiny, rub it in to see how far it goes. I work it into the cuticles especially, may leave a bit extra there to soak in slowly. Then apply more and rub it in skin of hands. Most folk squirt out way too much, can't rub it all in, have to share with someone or wipe off on a towel. You should see results within a couple days, but raw, split skin closing, healing, takes a bit more time. I use this heavy handcream on my horses when they have new skin that needs protection from the cold wind, dry air of winter to prevent splitting scabs open. Works pretty well. I am always amazed at how long those small, 3oz tubes last. I guess because you only need a bit to do both your hands. You might check with his Dr., to see if any of his medications are having dry skin as a side effect. The hot water hand washing, harsh soaps can be a big factor in skin drying as others mentioned. The bar soaps Neutrogena puts out are very cleansing, without being terribly skin drying. Work well in any water type, and in either hot or cold water. I take mine camping. You never know what the water will wash like, biodegradable fast. Bars do need good drainage so bars don't melt away real fast. Hope some of these ideas are useful. Split skin on your hands is SO hard to live with, constant chance of infections when working.

Violet, my post disappeared or I must not have hit send, but I would start with the ins. covered doctor, and go from there. If she is not getting anywhere, then I would do a self-pay consultation with a homeopathic MD. I found one in her area (Dr. Soule) but have no idea how good he is. Anyway, that isn't the starting point, just good to know there are options, if that makes sense. She just shouldn't give up. Duluth, wow-- Addison's Disease. My dear friend, who was really more like a cousin to me, passed away from it. She was 10 and I was 12. It was undiagnosed. She was half Mexican, half Irish. Her mother (Mexican) was very pale . . .as was she. VERY pale. She came home from a trip to Mexico and her skin was unusually dark-- in a tone that I've never seen anyone with. Along with this, she had symptoms like licking pickles, licking the salt off potato chips. Her test scores went down. They put a cot in the classroom for her. Etc., etc. The doctors would NOT believe her mom. They said she was fine. Said she needed her tonsils out (now we are amazed she survived the operation). Said she got dark because she was Mexican. Doctor appointment after doctor appointment, and they turned her away. As her parents were sitting down to discuss what they would say at the doctor's appointment (scheduled for the following day)-- they were not going to leave without answers-- she went into cardiac arrest and passed away. I miss her dearly. Shortly thereafter she passed away, my father had a dentist appointment. Our dear friend's death was weighing heavily on his mind, and told the dentist her symptoms. The dentist immediately diagnosed her with Addison's Disease. We could never figure out how the dentist knew, and these doctors-- for years-- did not. If only we had information back then as we do now. So glad you were diagnosed and are OK.

I'm 74 and have been exercising 3 times weekly now for 11 years. I really concentrate on my legs as they need to work for me when my poor old damaged lungs can't. I could still wear shorts in the summer until about 5 years ago when gravity finally got my knees. It was inevitable. I have very strong muscles in my legs but it's the skin, not the muscles. Yes, I have been a sun worshiper for many years. It doesn't help my skin but tanned saggy skin looks SO much better when it's tanned. At 60, you don't yet have the old bruised, scared legs that will appear over the next 10 years. Out skin on our calves thins and a small bump can result in a deep cut. My lower legs look like someone has been beating them with a stick! But when they're tan, they look much better and the scars and bruises don't show as much. It is very hard to age when one is vain. One must do the best one can and accept the rest with humility.

For dh's spot, I think a PCP could have done the biopsy and if the results are positive, then go to a dermatologist. It's a 45 min drive to the area of specialists we go to. I need to mention something else which is part of my question about PCP's. I've mentioned I have restless leg syndrome, and I've had it since my 20's. About 15 years ago I finally mentioned it to my late doctor, the one who did the biopsy on me, and he immediately gave me a prescription to take before bed. It was a life saver, because I had no idea a medicine would stop it. My new doctor let me continue the prescription but now I have to take a half pill more a day if I want to lay down to read during the day. My RL hits immediately, even when I'm not sleeping. At my appt. last week he upped the med by a half pill a day. Because I did a lot of research online about RLS I know there are other meds to take and I asked if I could try another one. I could tell he was looking it up on the computer and then he said to me, "I'm going to refer you to a neurologist because I'm not familiar with the medication." Then he continued to tell me they'd probably do an overnight sleep study/whatever. I looked at him and said I'm not going. Referring me to two specialists in one visit? Why couldn't he research the meds, or call his buddy the specialist where they make more money because of the referral and simply ask him what would be a good med for his patient? I'm not a doctor but I found that to be lazy on his part. He still referred me and I had to tell the lady no when she called.

I will ask the woman at the cosmetics counter at our department store, next time I go there. I would expect her to try to sell me a product of theirs, but I'll just try to get information too.

I'm sorry.... I meant dermabrasion! I guess no one has an answer yet. Whatever is causing the pores to remain large,needs to be removed wouldn't it?

I went to the library and got Paula Begoun's book -The Beauty Bible. There is very good information about caring for the face. I'm going to try the cleaning process she describes. I've been using bar soap, so I guess I shouldn't be surprised at the results.
If you can, take a look at this particular book. Too much to explain here.

As far as I've seen, from my "research" at Sephora and other places like that, there are only products that make your pores "appear" smaller (whatever that means), not that actually make them smaller.

The book says to use a gentle liquid or gel cleanser and exfoliate, also with non-abrasive gel or liquid.

I really think I am probably going to have this condition for a lifetime. It's only pretty noticeable outside in bright light. I think I have done all the wring things in regard to taking care of my face. Due to lack of knowledge and little interest when I was younger.

I was told by my doctor that you really can't do much to minimize them permanately.
Perscriptives sells a good daily fix to wear under foundation. It is called
Super Line Preventor. I feel like it works and makes my pores look better. However when it washes off I have large pores again. There is also something called Dr Feelgood that you alse wear under your foundation. It is made by Benefit. I liked it better but I had an allergic reaction to it.

Large pores are something you have forever. What you need to focus on is making sure you keep your skin clean, using a good pore minimizer (makes them appear smaller: Clinique Pore Minimizer, DermaDoctor Porefect are two I've used that are pretty decent), use a foundation that doesn't settle into pores (Avon Matte Foundation is wonderful), and a loose powder. Some people have found that rubbing an ice cube over their face also helps. I always use an astringent after cleaning and like good old cheap Clean and Clear. I don't know about you but I also have oil gusher skin (oily within 1/2 of cleaning) and blackheads, so my routine has been to use MaryKay Timewise Facial Soap, Clean and Clear Astringent, pore minimizer and a mattifier (can also make pores appear smaller - I like Smashbox Antishine or Face to Face Antishine), foundation, concealer, and loose powder. I also like a special washcloth that I've used for years called Old Vic - it has a nubby texture that exfoliates gently and is available online from both Amazon and The Vermont Country Store.

This won't be a popular answer, but here goes. ACCUTANE. I used to have big pores and acne. Not hideous acne, but a mild, yet persistent problem. I went to a dermatologist and he suggested accutane. I thought it was only for bad cystic acne, but he gave me a milder dosage for about six weeks. Yes, it's drastic, but what a difference! That was almost 20 years ago. Other than terribly dry skin during treatment, I had no side effects.
