Removing semi-permanent hair color

I've been using L'Oreal Castings in medium brown for years, Gradually the ends of my hair have gotten too dark so I'd like to "pull" some of the color out. (repeated washing has not faded it at all)

I've tried the Clairol UnColor product and also the Metalex method. Neither has done much to remove the old color.

Supposedly, the color removers for permanent haircoloring don't work on semi-permanent products (Something to do with the difference in the dyes ?)

Does anyone out there know of another way of pulling the old color ?

I heard Prell Shampoo was strong enough to reduce color.
Next time you color, try coating the ends with some VO-5
in a tube, or vaseline, that way the color won't adhere to the ends and it makes for a more natural color job.

speaking as a hairdresser, your "old hair" becomes very spongy afer repeated applications of color. you really cannot remove it. the only option is to have your hair trimed to strengthen the ends and get rid of the dark.
the biggest hint i can give you is NOT to color the ends every time you do your roots.
use regular color on you roots only, then add 2x as much shampoo to the rest of the color in the bottle. put that on the rest of your hair for 5 minutes only. rinse and condition.

have a friend or neighbor help you if you have trouble just getting the color on the roots. leave root color on for 15-20 min only. rinse, then apply the color/shampoo combo for the last 5 min.

The prettiest hair color I've seen is on a lady at my church: she has short black hair turning gray & as it gets more gray, she has a few strands all over dyed back blackish gray so it is such a beautiful & natural looking 'salt & pepper'(forget what the stylists call this procedure!) & she is able to keep it that way. Another lady has what I call the 'reverse Jay Leno': she had black hair that is all white now so she dyes it coal black & leaves a small portion in front the natural white color! Jay's is all naturally white now with a black wisp in the front... like a skunk I call it! I do think some persons have something similar that they were born with though. Many of our Native Americans here in the Southwest keep their long beautiful 'salt & pepper hair in beautiful braids or huge buns & nothing more beautiful than that natural beauty! A senior citizen that keeps her hair long,hanging loose down the back & dyed jet black (usually with the roots showing pure white!) ? ... uh, uh!!

I dont think there is any problem with dying your hair often I change my haircolor atleast once every two weeks but you have to be careful what kind of color you use and if you are just touching up your roots only do your roots for half the time then make your hair damp and pull the color through to your ends this will keep you from having "hot roots" or lines of demarkation. As for is it dangerous to your health I do know a hairdresser who died of cancer and they think that it was due to her messing with color all the time and not wearing gloves but as a hairdresser myself I know that we mess with color alot more then once a month.

Just use a color safe shampoo and conditioner, and once every couple of weeks, use a good detox shampoo. All the professional brands have one, also, Malibu products are good. Remember to condition well after using the detox shampoos. They are higher in PH (alkaline) so you need to use a conditioner to bring down the PH. Hair PH is at a 4.5 - 5.5 range, so anything used on the face skin and hair should be in this range, also. Don't look for PH balanced on the bottle...that just means it's been balanced to the PH of water...which is 7. Look for brands that are proud to say they have a PH of 4.5-5.5. Detox products (ones that remove buildup, clorine, etc) are higher in PH, so remember to use only once a week or less. Then use a good conditioner to close those cuticles up. Hair should be shampooed only every other day at the most. Unless you are doing something that gets it dirty on a daily basis. The natural oils need to be built up to condition the hair (nature's best conditioner.) Also, after getting hair colored, try not to shampoo again for at least 24 hours...better is 48 hrs.

Well ... I've just had another damn haircut! Went back to the guy who cut it last week when I was attempting the messy bob, but found it took too long to get it right before work in the mornings so I was just blowing it out straight, and it was a bit too long to lay right. I'm now shorter on the sides and in back, and very pleased with how simple it is to style this baby into a swinging little bob. I'm done with the changes for now. Only took a month of multiple stylists and entirely too much money to arrive at a style I'm loving. (Eeek. Entirely too much obsession over hair here!)

Thanks for the input. I've given up on removing the old color, and will just keep growing it out and cutting it off. I'll also follow your suggestion for avoiding overcoloring the ends in the future.
