traffic accident aftermath

I am new to this board but need some advice. I had a very serious traffic accident on Jan 30, 2007. I had tons of stitches in my face and head. The plastic surgeon says it will be at least August before anything can be done about the scars. The worse are on my forehead and my right eye. Does anyone know how to apply makeup to fairly new scars. Next question, they had to shave my head in spots to stitch it up. It looks like I have polka dots of no hair on my head. My DH said it does not look like it is growing back, it has been almost 4 months. I am almost 50 so maybe it is not just the accident. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

oh my, how unfortunate, I wish you all the best in your healing, you've been through a lot.
I don't know the answers to your questions; maybe a professional make up artist could give you a few sessions to get you started.

I would say firstly you should take a really great multivitiman from your local health food store (Solgar) makes a good one, or (DiVinci) Women's Formula. This may help with the hair growth and also your overall health.

If you are going to have your scars revised, perhaps make the appointment now and go in and speak with the plastic surgeon. I am sure they must be asked this question often. Nothing wrong with getting started with asking how to deal with these scars now. Once the scars are revised there are a host of scar treatments to lighten and lessen the appearance, or you could start on a regimen of Vitamin E oil on the scarring at night.

Best of luck to you.

At least other people have odd things happen, too. I appreciate your only minor leg-pulling. A friend used to tell me it wasn't that the things that happened were odd, it was the way I looked at it that made it odd. I still fail to see how I could have looked differently at a 6 foot I-beam that hit my front wheel as if it had been aimed or why three big truck drivers would think that just because I got out of the car and started kicking the back tire I might take it into my head to go after the driver of the other car. At the time I was a size six and wore the highest heels I could so people would stop patting me on the head and I had looked to see if the guy was all right before I started kicking my own car. Maybe it was my red hair. But back to this accident. Mark, I think the adrenaline rush I got was enough to numb any pain signals from the back. I didn't even think about it until much later and I still don't feel anything particularly uncomfortable. Writing things down does make things clearer though. It just occurred to me the reason I didn't see the squad car coming is because it was coming from the one direction I would not have expected it to come. Even if the turn signal had changed before I started my turn the traffic signal would have been for the north and south lanes rather than the west to east lanes and he was coming from the west and I wasn't even out into the intersection yet. Hallelujah! I don't know what the incident report is going to say but now I know I didn't cause the wreck by some sort of stupidity. It really was an accident! Thank you, thank you! Sandy

joepyeweed, Thanks for the link to the book, it looks like a good thing for winter reading. The plants that I can identify: 1) English Ivy - recently learned that Cornell University Extension classifies this as an invasive for this area. Since it covers almost half the property and is in the process of pulling down several trees and a good-sized chunk of my neighbors stockade fence, I would have to agree with them. But given the difficulty of getting rid of it and my limited timeframe, most of it will be staying when we sell the house. 2) Maple trees - two Norway maples that are >75' tall and more volunteers than I care to think about. These are the primary culprits in the lack of sunlight that affects the lawn area. Aside from the two large ones, many of them will be coming down, especially the ones along the fencelines and any that are less than 4" in diameter. 3) Several evergreen shrubs that were likely part of the landscaping when my in-laws bought the house back in the early sixties. Now in varying stages of health, none are native and all are UGLY. Most if not all of these will be going away. 4) Rose of Sharon - a handful of these exist in a massively overgrown state and will be going to the municipal compost facility as soon as I can reach them. Call it a personal prejudice, but I do not think there is a plant that I dislike more than these. Probably a leftover from my teenage years when my parents had both sides of their property lined with hedges of it that I had to trim regularly. Aside from those, the rest are whatever has found its' way into the back half of a 1/2 acre lot over the past 40 years. Future plans: Though I *do not* intend to go in with a brush-hog and a barrel full of RoundUp, I *do* intend to cut a loop-path through the ivy so that I can get to the entire yard. Although I cannot see all of the yard through the trees/ivy/scrub, I can see at least two dead trees and MANY windfalls that need to go away. Once I can get to the entire yard, I'll take a closer look and see what can be done with what is there. Aside from the items mentioned above, I'm trying to keep an open mind about what stays and what goes.

Update on Repairs after Oct. 20 Accident

I'm bringing this up again because Chubb has yet to settle the personal injury portion of this accident. Someone called today and is sending medical release forms because they have been unable to get my DH's statements from his visit to the ER on the day of the accident. I'm grateful he had no further physical problems once his sore back and ribs recovered, but...we have spent a LOT of time fussing and worrying over this incident. It was a nice autumn day until BAM! this kid hit our car. It took weeks to get our car back -- hours of time dealing with the aftermath. What should we expect to receive for our troubles -- beyond getting the car repaired?

Granite install aftermath

lotofkids- I feel your pain. We too have upper cabinets that come down and set on top of the counters. Ran into the dilemma with the counter top company not wanting them installed prior to countertops. This is want we did to please painters, fabricators, and cabinet installers- the cabinets are hung about an inch higher than needed for now, painters will come in and spray, then on Monday, countertop install, then cabinet guy will return to lower uppers that need to sit on countertop and install crown for the top gap. Fabricators didn't want to be responsible for damaging cabinets, but I think they are temporarily high enough for the counters to slip in between uppers(that sit on counters) and the lowers. Anyway, not that that helps, but my next point is this - I went last Friday to template for my granite island. When I got to the fabricators, they couldn't find my one of a kind, unique slab that I had paid in full and such uniqueness cannot be replaced. I did end up on Friday afternoon finding a similar slab cut from the same quarry, but only by luck. I stop by the showroom today to see if they pick up my slab yet for me to template (installation on Monday). Did very nicely explain that I really wasn't happy with them losing, reselling, or what ever happened to my paid in full slab. It really has upset me. Doesn't appear that they are in anyway going to make up for it. Not acceptable- they have all my $$$$ and I don't have the piece I paid for. I have used them for a bathroom job, this job includes all plumbing materials, perimeter quartz counters, granite island, along with backsplash. I not even sure if I ever got an "I'm sorry" out of them. I tried, but doesn't appear that they sympathize with me. I did see of their website for customer comments. When they are done, I will leave a comment, since they say on their website how they "guarantee" our satisfaction. Maybe that will make me feel better.

I just saw an ad on tv, mederma, skin care for scars; don't know anything about it but I thought of this thread, something to look into.

I have always heard that Dermablend is the best makeup to conceal scars. I agree about seeing your plastic surgeon ASAP. Maybe see a dermatologist about the patches on your scalp. Good luck with your healing process.

So sorry to hear of your accident. I use Dermablend and it really works well. Have the saleswoman at the store do a demo on you, so you can learn exactly how to apply the product and setting powder.

It's also good advice to ask about the scar reduction that you will be having done. As for the patches on your head, find out if they are caused by scar tissue or alopecea (a form of hair loss that can accompany a major trauma - even emotional) If the latter is the cause, your dermatologist can inject cortisone into the scalp. Yes, it hurts like hell, but it works. If it is caused by the scarring, then perhaps the scar reduction will help to close up the larger patches, and then a good stylist can help you with a cut that can disguise the rest.

Best of luck to you as you heal.

I recently had some plastic surgery, and tried Mederma. I immediately noticed extreme itching and redness, so I returned the product. It turns out that one of the main ingredients is allium extract (onions) - I'm allergic to onions! Maybe I'll try the vitamin E oil.
