I would personally do something like the calcutta countertop. I love the look of contrast in a space. My DH and I just redid our powder room and we did a dark espresso vanity with a with a white marble top. Although it depends on the other elements of your room as well. A darker countertop can look good too, but i tend to prefer the contrast of light and dark.

I actually think espresso could possibly date your kitchen. I see a lot of espresso or dark stain cabinets today with metallic tile backsplashes. It's very contemporary and BEAUTIFUL but it may read oh-so-2009-2010 in a few years. I don't know for sure. My research indicates that white is the safest choice for longevity. We're going with white cabinets, Shaker style, dark countertops and white Subway tile. Our island will be the reverse: espresso cabinets with white (marble-looking but not marble) quartz counters. In our last house, we had light floors (bamboo) and white cabinets with dark counters and black appliances. It actually was a nice black and white kitchen. Kind of an accident but it turned out well. Having said all that, I still LOVE espresso. I think it won't be too dark, especially if you go with a lighter backsplash. And you can take the money you save and get that extra sink! Good luck to you. Here is a link that might be useful: Our Old Kitchen

What color is your trim? I'd try to match either the gray or your trim color.
