Tequila Shortage

Is there a tequila shortage in your area? It's impossible to get where I live. The clerk told me there is not much agave??catcus out there anymore. I'll be interested to hear everyones opinion. I don't drink a lot of this, but in the summer margaritas are nice :-)

I work for a liquor distributor and yes, the agave plants used to make tequila have a disease. So basically, there is no cheap tequila anymore, although Cuervo and Sauza have not raised prices as much, so we joke that some price fixing is going on. A good value is Sauza Commeverito - 100% agave, not like Cuervo Gold which is caramel colored Silver and only 51% agave.

Just by being self-sufficient you'd be helping, because that frees up more supplies for others. I'm glad for this thread (won't say I'm glad for all the snow) to remind me we should have water stored. If you want to be really motivated to prepare, read One Second After by William Forstchen. It's a novel about what would happen after an EMP attack. The electromagnetic pulse brings everything to a halt. The story imagines what life would be like in one of the best places, a community in the mountains of North Carolina. The people have skills, they help each other, and there is even one car that still works. But things get harder and harder. It's an edge-of-the-seat read, and very scary because it's possible.

Duane, I too can't wait for fresh tomatoes with some salt. That is my absolute favorite as well. I bought my sister a gift box of salt from the Himalayan salt site. Not only were the varied salts wonderful (the block of pink salt particularly), but the packaging was lovely as well. Sherrmann - that is really interesting. It must be some weird taste thing, but it sounds like his body has found a way to compensate. I can understand being sensitive to fructose, the sugar in fruits (does he eat other sweet things?), but the vegetable thing is weird. Do they take suplements? Getting your vit and min through whole foods is the best bet, but it sounds like for them supplements might be a good idea. We also have deer wandering through the property, but they've stayed farther away since we got the dumb mutt. They're clearly not afraid of her, since they just look at her when she barks, but they do keep a respectful distance now. AM

Beware renting near the UofA unless he wants to continue college life! Not a lot of apartments near Raytheon. (DH just retired from R and we moved back east after 3 years in TUS.) Also beware renting in a place that caters to snowbirds, unless he likes being surrounded by geezers! He could also check with coworkers for recommendations. One of our favorite grocery stores is Sprouts, a west coast chain. Great weekly specials. And the Total Wine there is unbelievable....a whole row of tequilas! One of DH's local favorites is Del Bac Mesquite Smoked Whiskey...worth schleping back on the plane!

September 30, 2021 Remember the apple tree that was blooming a few days ago. Here's a picture which I shoulda otta posted then. If you remember i also had photos of a quince that bloomed last Christmas and then again in the spring. The quince was on the vacant lot next door and got no attention. for years, other than I threw a spade full of manure at it, I think, earlier that spring. I think stress might cause this but the quince had been neglected and perked up after the manure treatment. This apple got a lot of manure last season and no attention this year. It also had loads of apples which I should of thinned but had no energy for any gardening this year other than sitting and watching the weeds grow. Any way; I may have Golden Delicious apples come ripe next winter.

I have been to Jalisco and Guanajuato in central Mexico. Yes, there is a shortage. Many Mexicans are concerned because there are so few mature agave plants. The plants take years to grow, and I only could find very young plants when I was there last. Also, the demand has increased. The popularity of brandy seems to have decreased, and the popularity of tequila has increased.
A good bottle of tequila was only $7.00 six years ago. That same bottle is now more than $20.00.

I live in Guadalajara, Jalisco, home of the appellation, "tequila" and 30 miles from Tequila, Mexico.

The agave shortage is real due to underestimation of sales and a Gringo-taught contrivance to boost prices. The agave "pineapple" takes years to grow so recovery will be slow and prices will reflect this. Even in Guadalajara, prices have skyrocketed.

But for anything other than "neat" drinking, I use Cuervo Gold. Making a margarita with 100% agave azul tequila is like drinking Petrus on the rocks.

My favorite is Chamucos ("Demons"), a reposado, which I keep syrupy in the freezer.

Tequila is s**t anyway. Why support foreign liquor companies when you can buy quality American whiskies, made from corn and other grains instead of cactus?

I spoke too soon. About a week after I posted that, I came home and found a bottle of Sauza on the table (it was my roommate's). I smelled it and it actually smelled GOOD! I also realize it's made from agave and not cactus. And with that whole Seagram's 7 thing, well I actually prefer Jim Beam (longer tradition, American origins, not blended, since 1795!) bourbon. But I now am going to include Sauza (the darker variety) in my liquor cabinet:)
