wheeler & wilson treadle sewing machine

I recently received a Wheeler & Wilson D-12 industrial treadle sewing machine. Does anybody have any info in it? Looking especialy for a Date of manufature? I have done the usual search on the web and keep getting the same info but no dates.

I sew professionally and the words "industrial" and "treadle" don't really jive. Industrial indicates electricity; a 1/3-1/2hp motor, a larger "head" and mass production.

I've never heard of Wheeler&Wilson, but there are a lot of things I've never heard of!

Does "treadle" refer to the way the machine is powered (by foot... you pump the treadle and make the machine go?), or are you referring to the treadle as the thing you put your foot on to activate an electric motor?

I've googled it and am still poring over the sites turned up!

Beautiful. Would you happen to know where I can get a bobbin for my Wheeler & Wilson D-9 treadle machine? I am interested in getting a bobbin for use to commission a local machine shop to make some for me. I do have one bobbin for my W&W D-9 treadle but I use my machine often for making quilt tops and I'm reluctant to use my only bobbin as an example for the machine shop. You have a beautiful machine and I'm sure you enjoy it.

Hi everyone, I know I am over a year late from the last time someone updated this feed, but hey. I am wondering if any of you wonderful people could help me. I have almost finished restoring a Wheeler & Wilson no.9 that I rescued, but sadly I cannot get hold of a bobbin and bobbin case. The machine was about to be vandalized. The owner was going to have it turned in to a table and the machine just thrown away. I quickly threw on my nicest smile, added some charm and sweet talked her in to giving it to me instead. I have gone over the machine with a fine tooth comb, replaced a few parts and repaired the foot pedal and mechanism and it is now ready to go, except for these two parts. If anyone would be kind enough to give me some advice as to where I can obtain these parts, it would certainly be invaluable information and I would be very grateful. Kind regards, Nathan

For sure not Singer, while the older treadles didn't have the S, they were also the "Coffin top" type. For age, what does the machine opening look like? that may also give a clue to the manufacturer of the machine that went i, though many used the same cabinet manufacturer (though not Singer). I'd also say the age is in that range - Before that they didn't use the flip type opening that this has. I've been doing a lot of research on SInger treadles, and I've seen a lot of other treadle cabinets online and in person, but not one like that. The ornate sides that hold the drawers are very unique, and it's also got a very plain treadle base. Try Wheeler and Wilson - that looks the closest - does yours have metal support right up under the cabinet to hold the legs together?

Solstice: If you send me the serial number of your Singer, I can tell you the day it was commissioned. Calliope: Don't get me started on old machines! It's WAY more than a hobby for me! Of course there were industrial Treadles! What do you think industry used before the 1920s when the first electrical sewing machines were produced?

Wheeler Wilson was a well-known manufacturer of treadle sewing machines. They are quite common among sewing machine collectors.

I am not sure, but I believe it was produced around the turn of the century.It had to be before 1905, because that is when Singer took over the company.

(I love old sewing machines, but wish to heck I collected something smaller.)

Generally speaking, "industrial" equipment has a larger head and is powered by electricity. My 1929 Singer 31-15 is a perfect example. So is the 1943 Willcox&Gibbs rotary take-up(have 2 and love them!). Both techinically have "treadles". But the treadles are not the primary means of powering them.

Of course, "treadle" machines were used commercially before electricity; I'm not THAT dumb, after all... ;) I was merely pointing out the difficulty "treadle" presents as a descriptive term. My brand new Juki 9010 has a "treadle", but it's simply an antiquated monniker, in no way indicative of the computerized motor/control box that operates the machine head.
