weber silver genesis B valve/burner question

We have a 5 year old NG Weber BBQ grill. We have noticed that the back burner doesn't fully light. We have taken it apart and as per the manual, we cleaned out the burner tubes and cleaned the spider guards. THere was no large accumulation of dirt or spider webs in the burner tubes and the spider guards were relatively clean. After all the disassembly the last burner still does not light all the way. The first and middle burners are fine, the connector bar on the left is lit, but the last burner is barely lit halfway from the LEFT. We are surmising, perhaps incorrectly, that the valve on the manifold for that burner may be clogged. How does one check and clean the valves on the manifold? Or any other suggestions?

So far you did a great job. However I did not see that you brushed the burner tubes on the outside. At times gunk does get past the flavorizer bars and clogs the little openings on the burner. Weber described this problem in their old mullet wrapper "The Grillout Times" and recommended to use a a clean wire brush (don't recommend using the one you clean the grates with or more gunk will get on burner)and lightly clean the exterior of the burner using a front to back motion. Do not clean the burner using a side to side motion. I did as described and the lazy burner then lit all the way across.

Jeff, thanks for your reply. I'd forgotten to mention that we had brushed the tubes on the outside as well, and there was no change in that burner - there was still no flame from the middle of the burner all the way to the right side where it leaves the shell of the BBQ. Any other ideas?

My experience has been completely the opposite..... I hated canning outside! and there is no amount of money that could intice me to do it again. Maybe it was my burner, maybe it was the location or maybe it was just me, but it was awful. First I tried putting everything together in the kitchen and then just bringing a filled canner outside. Besides the safety risks of transporting a heavy hot pot, I had to sit outside and watch it like a hawk. It took forever for the water to boil (like 45 min) and the wind(I guess) made regulating the pressure a nightmare. I was regulating the flame every 2 min. even after moving to an enclosed area (3 walls and a roof). Never could get any reading done. After fighting with the gauge for 2+ hours then coming back inside, all the pots and pans still needed to be cleaned up. So then I tried moving the whole canning operation outside. What a pain. I only had the one burner and a regular gas grill. So there was a lack of heat sources. Then, it was hard to keep everything clean, bugs and leaves would fall into a pot of jelly (no trees in my back yard!) No water source, lugging all the supplies back and forth. Couldn't keep the pots from getting sooty and eventhough I soaped them first, I always managed to get soot all over me before it was through. I canned this way for an entire year. It was the same year we had 47 days in a row of 100+ temps (that's not heat index). It is my only bad memory of living in TX. My mom on the other hand will do large batches outside on old coleman camp stoves setup on picnic tables. Never had a problem, has even had 7 canners going at once. Maybe canning outside is something I am just not meant to do. Tanya

I'm happy with my Weber Summit Silver bought about 6 years ago. This model has 4 burners arranged left-to-right, by the way. Performance is good - my only gripe is that the separate side burner to the right of the grill isn't very adjustable (though I rarely need it for anything). While I could probably get choosey and find a more perfect grill, I would first look at Weber's higher-end because I'm thrilled with Weber's customer support. While performing way-overdue maintenance, I called them to order some replacement parts for items that had understandably worn out or corroded over time... They sent me replacements at no charge. No questions about warranty periods or anything like that. I called them intending to purchase parts, but it seemed they volunteered to replace them on the assumption that Weber products are designed to last forever. So I'm a loyal customer of Weber's. We live not far from the pacific ocean, the grill is outside, uncovered and facing the sea, and we use it 2-3 times a week year-round. No complaints.

The best inexpensive Weber is the Q300. My nephew has the Weber Genesis Gold and my niece the Genesis Silver. The grill on the Q300 is almost identical in size to the Silver; the Silver just has larger and more elaborate plastic counters. I've used all of them and am satisfied with the Q300. Extremely heavy and well-made. It tests very well (Cook's Illustrated recommended it as best in the low-priced models) and we've really enjoyed using it since I bought it two months ago. Rather to my surprise, it was $20 less than when I looked at it two years ago - $229 in a local hardware store. Plus, the store delivered and set it up for free, along with a $10 discount on the first propane tank. Despite the wheels, it doesn't move around easily - the grill itself is a heavyweight at 79 lbs, not including the cart that holds it. It's getting late in the season - whatever you buy, if it uses foil pans of a specific size for grease catching (the Q300 is in this category), buy a couple of pkgs of the pans since in a month or so they'll disappear from the stores until next year.

When you had the internals (Flavorizer Bars) out did you do a test light to see if burner lit all the way across? Reason I ask is did the crossover pipe light all the way ie entire length (should run along the left side of the box)? Think what you are referring to as the connector bar is the crossover pipe.

Additionally the area that did not light on the rear bar I'd give that area a light brushing again.

If all else fails give Weber a call they are very helpful and their custome support is top notch.

In our test lighting, the crossover (or what I call the connector) bar was lit along its entire length. We will try to brush the rear burner again...but we don't have high hopes. After that, a call to Weber will be in order - after I finish with Garmin and our GPS!

Helene,

I'm sure you will have a much more pleasant experience with Weber vice Garmin. I still have a flat spot on my head dealing with Garmin concerning one of the GPS' I have.
Keep us posted on what Weber says.
