Help with choosing grout color with Black pebbles- pictures anyon

Hi,

We are putting a river rock (black pebbles) on the floor of our shower and would like to figure out a grout color that will bring out the pebbles, without too much of a contrast.

I have chosen rectified porcelain tile (Iron black,similar to the pic attached)for the shower walls, and will have a narrow band of pebble going up the wall as an accent.

My question is - what color grout would work with the tile and pebble without seeming too different? I prefer tiny spacing for the tile, and the pebbles will definitely have a lot of grout. I am leaning towards a grey color (Montana grey or Indian Flint by North American Adhesives).

Any suggestions, pictures of your project or ideas will be greatly apreciated.

Bump! Please anyone, pictures?

Here are the ones I have chosen for our shower..Iron slate porcelain tile for the walls, and black pebbles for the floor. I would like to use a grout that will show off the pebbles, but not provide too much of a contrast. The rest of the bathroom is clean and simple. I am going for a spa like feel, contemporary look without being minimalistic. {{gwi:1388133}}From Drop Box

My GC is saying we should use the same oclor grout to "tie it all together" What it would do is make it alot easier for the installer, being he doesn't have to worry about getting the wrong color grout either in the joints of the floor, or on top of the already grouted floor. I agree-- a bit darker grey would work much better-- even a charcoal. Using a charcoal with this hex would be the same thing as a light grey with the white tiles-- just enough of a shade off to show up the pattern, but not enough to take away from it. Either way, using a real light colored grout in that black hex, IMO, would be a mistake. But then again, it's not my floor, either. :-)

I would love to see a picture. I have my pics on photobucket, but there are other on line storage sites. From there, I copy the html code (by clicking on it, and a tiny sign says "copied"), then I paste it right into my message. A way to test grout color is to put some dry grout into the cracks of a portion of your mosaic. Then vacuum and blow it out. That is how I chose the colors for this little table. The warm tan looked better with the table colors than gray. I had already grouted the bird dark grey as I wanted it to look like lead. I chose gray for a lamp I made because it had bluish pinks in it and I thought that gray complemented that better than tan. I never use white, but I have a friend who does and her things are beautiful. Her tess tends to be light background tho. Hope this helps, Kathy

Yes and no. We caulked where the walls meet the floor, which has been an improvement there. Unfortunately a few months after this post a hairline crack started from the corner towards the drain. It was several inches long. I had the contractor come out to fix it and he just dremeled the crack and put more grout. Told me that would fix it. Literally 2 weeks later the crack was back. After having used him for many remodeling jobs over the years, I found out after the bathroom was done that he'd only done a handful of bathroom remodels and usually hired out a tiler, but decided he'd "do me favor" to lower the price doing it himself instead. I'd never have hired him for it had I known any of that. Calling him again for more ineffective patch jobs on this seems pointless. I just want it fixed properly at the point. Since then I had another contractor redo a different bathroom and asked his opinion on this. Within 5 seconds he could see the slope wasn't steep enough for the pebbles. He thought the entire pebble base would have to be removed to fix it, which would be a nightmare as we have a marble bench on one end and it would likely damage the marble walls. I don't have the time or $ do literally redo a remodel so soon. He said maybe we could get some kind of custom colored grout/caulk mix from the tile company to fill the crack and keep it from spreading. With other renovations & a new baby I haven't had time to try that yet, but every time I look at it I worry that it's going to get worse and get so frustrated that something that cost so much has been such a problem from the beginning. Any recommendations would be appreciated.

I assume you have children. I assume you are looking for spill and mess tolerant. I will assume the budget is strict. I will ALSO assume you will be back here asking how to bring the space to life. Don't purchase mud if you can avoid it. The selection above is better, but still heavy and dark on the carpet. Must you have wall to wall carpet in the family room is the question, and must you have tile? Sectionals are first SIZE and fit to a space. ........first things first, here.. And yes..........where IS the counter top selection., please !!?

Since you need a bump I'll chime in...

I prefer charcoal grout with black pebbles. A few times I've blended grout colors together blending charcoal grout with a dark gray for a "light" charcoal or a really "dark" gray, or blending carbon black with any grout to darken it.

That's my personal preference with the black pebbles. With other pebbles more contrast is okay, but with black pebbles I'm always drawn towards dark grout with minimal contrast.

Funny thing is with dark tiles I like dark or light grout. It's the black pebbles that sway me to dark on dark for whatever reason.

Thanks, mongoct! Do you have any pics that you could share with me? The one swatch I have posted is with "monatana grey" grout that I just made up as a sample. It dried darker than I thougth it would..so my worry is that if I go with a charcoal color, it may not show the pebble feature.
of course my wate ratio may have been waaaay off, as I have never mixed grout...ever!

No. No photos.

You can certainly go with the lighter gray, it's your preference. That's why I emphasized it's just my personal preference to do close to black on black with pebbles. There's absolutely nothing wrong with gray-black.

If you really like the contrast and want to make the individual pebbles pop, then make it happen, it's perfectly appropriate.

We ended up using Montana grey grout for the pebbles, as the only premixed choice wer gray or black, no charcoal, which would have been my preferred choice.
I did not trust my GC to mix a batch and bring out consistant color, so we went with gray. Here are some pics of the finshed shower..the pebbles need to be cleaned and sealed yet.
