Installation of GE Cafe range

We just received our new GE Cafe range (AG) and was ready to install, or so I thought. We were converting from electric, so I ran a new circuit for the electrical and we just had a gas line put in today. In both cases, I consulted the installation manual online from GE Appliance site for the recommended areas to run these connections.

Now that I physically have the range here, it does not appear to match of with the diagram at all. The instruction manual that shipped with it (correct model #) matches the same diagram I was using. However where it says I have 13" of vertical clearance just near the centerline, there is only about 4"!

The culprit appears to be a shroud for the fan. Without the shroud, the diagram makes sense. With the shroud I have a lot less area to work with. The shroud extends below the fan motor about 10" more than it needs to (in my opinion).

So it would seem my options are:

1) Have the gas line moved.

2) Remove the shroud and install as is.

Does the shroud serve any purpose other than protecting the fan motor? Am I contemplating something stupid by removing it?

Please help!

Thanks.
