our members mark gas grill isn't working

hi, we bought a member's mark gas grill model Y0101XC at Sam's Club, a lot of money, and the thing does not work. it wont go above 200 degrees F., it takes about an hour just to cook the hamburgers. when we used it the first time, it worked fine, the second time it didnt work(and consequently the next several attempts to use it, they failed). my mother looked it over, checked the gas and the line conecting it to the despensers of the gas, and everything else, and could find nothing wrong (she is the gas grill expert in the family, shes the one who bought it and put it together, and who loves this thing). so now she is heart broken because she spent $600 on something that doesnt work, and whenever we call in to the company all we get is the busy signal. This is NOT AMUSING at all, and it is bothering us quite a bit. So i need to find the information of where we can get in touch with them. We cannot seem to find this information. if you are going to kindly say the 1-800-770-9769 number..well thats the one that doesnt work. so please folks, help out 2 women who are running around ripping hair out of their head. or who will in about a week take a hammer to the grill and smash it to bits. please, knowing how much you ladies and gentlemen love grills, i'm positive that you would want to help us out. thank you so much.

Since the grill worked fine the first time, everything sounds like it is OK. Here is something you can try which is common to all gas grills which now uses the new style LP tank valves, not just the MM grills. When you turn on the main valve from your LP tank, make sure to open it slowly. It seems that with these new vales that are now required on LP tanks, to prevent over filling, if you open the valve to fast the valve is designed to restrict the flow of gas. This is a safety feature in case of a leak. With the restricted gas flow you would not get the high temps.

If you do need to contact Grand Hall, try calling first thing in the morning. I've called them a couple time then and got right through.

Keep calling the number the Tll free number I have talk to them twice within the last week. Once to order some stuff from the Catalog that came in the grill and last Thursday to order a replacement valve for one of the burner that went bad. The new valve came by UPS today and covered under warranty. Try around 2 or 3 central time thats when I have gotten thru. If the valve trick doesn't work, you may have a bad regurator and they will replace it.

I think this kind of thing could happen to anyone using any brand gas grill, so it's a good warning to check all connections carefully before grilling. I confess I only checked the tank to regulator and regulator hose for leaks prior to my first usage of the Virco. The manual did say to also check the gas control valves, but I couldn't figure out how to get to them. I guess I could see them from underneath if I lay on my back, so that's what I'll do next time. I also recall that propane is heavier than air, unlike natural gas, which is lighter than air. So the propane can settle in low places and collect and then explode. Also, as I have recently noticed, a new steel propane container may react with the odorant in the propane charge, and the result is that it can be harder to detect leaks. Lots of people are probably buying new propane tanks with OPD valves rather than retrofit their old ones, so perhaps some extra caution is needed for the first tankful or so. All this makes me wonder if perhaps I may be installing the natural gas conversion kit sooner than I expected...;-) Here is a link that might be useful: Propane safety

Snappy, If you are refering to the $599 model, they don't offer an NG model or conversion kit. Not sure on the new "Big" grill that is going for $1500. There have been several posts about converting these grills to NG here in this forum. I know you said you emailed the manufacture (Grand Hall). You could try an give them a call: 800-770-9769 M-F 8:00am to 4:30pm CST or 214-349-1097 Anyways, check out a couple other threads (I've posted the link below) in this forum about these grills. Lots of information has been posted over the years. The first one is mainly about converting grills from LP to NG. Maybe this will help you out. As many of you, I have been drooling over this grill for over a year. Your postings have confirmed my thoughts and I have already received financial approval. I will be getting this grill within the next 2 weeks. The question I have, and also saw that someone else asked but have not seen a response, has anyone done a "permanent" or "semi-permanent" installation with an LP heated house? My house is only a year old and is heated by LP. We have a 1000 gallon tank buried in the yard. All of the discussions of plumbing type and size encourage me to offer some detail as to our setup. There is a regulator on the side of the house that drops the pressure to 2 PSI. Inside there is a regulator attached to a manafold that provides individual taps for every appliance (2 furnaces, water heater, stove, dryer, and a dedicated run to the deck for a "future grill") All of this is done with a somewhat flexible 1/2" yellow (I guess vinyl) coated copper. That main regulator is supposed to be able to support all of the appliances and maintain the 14" of pressure. Outside is a stub of 1/2" black pipe to which I need to connect. My plan is a temporary connection (soft hose) upon purchase and a permanent one when I can build this unit in. I agree with the concerns of leaks and will obviously put a shut-off valve before any soft hose. I saw mention of a hose kit from HD for $35. This is listed as an NG hose but at roughly 1/2 PSI I assume it will work for LP? Any thoughts or input would be appreciated. Thanks, Lee

Alek, I enjoyed looking at all the info on your web site. Recently I saw a NG Y0660 that had been returned to Sam's Club because the buyer really needed the LPG version. It was a bit dented-up in the front, and missing the rotisserie parts. Sam's wanted $700 for it. I started the task of trying to figure out just what it would take to convert it to propane and to repair the cosmetic damage. When I realized that the valves would have to be replaced, as well as the orifices, both doors and one drawer, as well as all the missing rotisserie parts, I almost bagged the idea, but decided to call Grand Hall and check on parts prices anyway. Am I ever glad that I did! The prices were so reasonable that the total cost to convert to LPG and restore the grill to new condition was only $270.00 including shipping. When my offer of $500.00 was accepted by the manager at Sam's I picked up the grill and ordered the parts. I've installed them all, with the exception of one valve that was not correct, a missing bracket to mount the rotisserie motor, and slides for the tank drawer ... basically just "noise-level" problems. Haven't had a chance to use the grill yet, as the weather hasn't been too cooperative, but I'm looking forward to it. My total cost for an "almost new" Y0660 grill is now $770.00. ! ! ! ! ! ! S C O R E ! ! ! ! ! ! There are a few things that I've learned from this exercise that I'd like to pass along: 1) Grand Hall's customer service folks are great! Their policies are pretty good too ... with the incorrect part it was "Oh, we'll get a replacement out today", not "Send it back and we'll see ...". 2) If you know what you need, and how to ask for it, you *CAN* buy the parts to convert these grills from NG to LPG and from LPG to NG. 3) The parts costs are ludicrously low ... the main valves, which include the orifice are only $5.00 each, and the side burner and rotisserie valves are $8.00 each, as they include a little more hardware. It probably makes more sense to just buy the darned things than to do the drilling for the LPG to NG conversion, and it's WAYYY better to buy for the NG to LPG conversion than to try filling and redrilling with smaller holes. 4) Rather than actually replacing the valves, which can be difficult to get off the manifold of the Y0660, it's better to just swap the valve cores and the orifices. I don't know for sure if the valves are common between the Y0660 and the smaller Y0101XC, but the conversion pictures on your site look identical. For example, the main burner gas valve part number is P03222007A for LPG. Also, the valve bodies have the number "0404A" cast into the side. This is the same for the NG and the LPG valves. How does this compare to the part number & valves for the Y0101XC? I have a full set of parts for anyone wanting to convert from LPG to NG. I'd also be interested in that guage that you've got left over from your conversion,...

I have also seen this problem occur due to the opening of the valve too fast. I have found that if you have one of the burners on high before you open the tank valve, it seems to alleviate this problem. Just open one of the burner valves to high, open the tank valve as fast as you want then turn the burner off. Wait a couple of seconds then turn burner on and light as normal. I seem to have noticed that this is more common when the grill is sitting in the heat for a while. It does not seem to be affected near as much in the morning hours when it is cooler and (in my case) when the sun is not on the grill for a long while. I think it might have something to do with the heat expanding what gas is in the line between the regulator and the gas valve. Good luck, bsbbq

There is a safety device in the connector just before the regulator. There is a small ball that will stop or restrict the flow from the tank to the regulator. It is designed to stop flow if the hose ruptures, etc.

If the tank valve is opened too fast, you will send the little ball crashing into the end of the fitting nearest the regulator where it might stick and restrict the flow.

While you are wating for a response from Grand Hall or a new regulator, you can try this. If you are mechanically inclined, unscrew the fitting from the regulator. Try to blow both forward and backward through the fitting. If you can't free the ball this way, tap the tank end of the fitting on a piece of wood. If that does not work, you can try to gently push the ball back with a small wire. Be careful not to damage the small spring in there. If you get to this point, you may get it working but should replace the regulator under waranty.

If you get the ball unstuck, reattach everything. Use some sealer (teflon, etc from the hardware store) on the threads going into the regulator.

MAKE SURE THE HOSE IS NOT ATTACHED TO THE TANK IF YOU DO THIS. MOST PEOPLE WILL KNOW THIS BUT I THOUGHT IT MIGHT BE GOOD TO REMIND YOU JUST IN CASE YOU ARE AN AGGIE.

I know you may have had trouble reaching gh in the past but they have installed a new phone system with many more lines.You should be able to get through now I noticed a big improved-didnt have to wait at all.Here is the Customer service rep's e-mail that I used-you could drop her a line too
