Red Blotches on Face

I'm female, 46, and have red blotches and broken capillaries on my cheeks and nose. I try to cover them up with concealer and foundation but it doesn't last. The Dermatologist says it's not rosacea. I can't afford any type of laser treatment at this time. Anyone have any other ideas for this problem? Thanks.

I am 55 and do have rosacea (Irish ancentry - curst of the Celts) but am unable to use meds or topical treatment. Also have very thin skin so no hydrocortisone. What would help is to know your skin type and what products you are currently using and if you have any allergies or sensitivities to certain ingredients (e.g. I have a serious problem with many botanicals/algae, suffer from ragweed and to top it off, am allergic to anti-histamine). I have also been diagnosed by top derm as "having extreme sensitivities to products formulated for sensitive skins". Hormonal changes could also be contributing to the red blotches. I am unable to use any form of acids/retinols/Vitamin C on my face. Said use would result in serious irritation and red blotches not to mention cause my desert like dry and dehydrated skin to become every drier if that is possible. That said, I have worked out a plan and all in all my very thin, VPPP, dry, dehydrated, 55 year old skin does not look too bad. Also would be helpful to know if you eat a lot of spicy food, spend time in saunas or steam rooms etc. And, if so, are blotches worse are doing so. Heck are you wearing a moisturizer with a combined sunscreen - that alone would do it for me - everything has to be stand alone. Think of any other triggers. Also type of detergent you use can cause a problem - rash from your pillow. So many things to consider. Will check back.

You might try make up for scar cover up, it also works for other imperfections and is supposed to be more durable. I googled scar cover up and found several. Here is one link.

Here is a link that might be useful: Dermablend

Is this red blotch?

I had that happen to one of my bulbs. I'm not sure what it is as Google was not very helpful. But I isolated the Bob and let it grow out and treated with mite-cide and antifungal in case that is the problem. The subsequent leaves are ok, but it's still a wait game. I wouldn't chuck out a bulb unless it's mosaic virus that threatens the rest of your bulbs. :D

Seedlings should not be infected. Some types of fungi can pass from mother to seed because of mycelium residing in the seed coat or embryo, but in my experience this appears not happen with red blotch. Seedlings will grow up without the fungus, if they are not secondarily infected after germinating. The offset could be infected because of its close contact with the mother. It would be very easy for spores of the fungus to be transferred from the mother to offset. But my understanding is that red blotch is not systemic, so it is not passed directly through though the living connection. This is unlike mosaic virus, in which the offset is nearly certain to receive the disease directly from the mother plant. In Hippeastrum, many types of leaf damage can result in red markings, so yours may not be red blotch. If it is, however, it does not appear to be a serious case. I think most of us have red blotch in our collections, but we learn to manage it. I would be curious to hear if anyone here believes that s/he has a blotch-free collection. Maybe I am overly complacent about this. But in any case, it would do you well to try to prevent it from entering in the first place... Bill

Do you have a link to these "natural antagonist"? The red blotch seems always with Amaryllis. After one year, research, shopping Amaryllis online and local. I can see red blotch in all products sold. Most are minor infected, but it is obvious to the eye from my experience. I derived a process below, so it is under control and none observed so far on my 1st bulb started 5 weeks ago. It is in full bloom now, started at the south warm window and moved to the cooler north side of the house to slow the flowering process. I am starting a 2nd one today using the same process. The attached photo was the new bulb I bought this year from local. The seven I bought last year are still in the dominant state. 1. Keep the bulb dry at all time, 2. Bottom-up watering, 3. On new bulb, I start it soaking in bleach mix with hot water at 120F water bath for a few hours, 3. Then dry it out with a small fan on it for a couple days while the bulb starting on the water with base plate slightly above the water line. 4. Transplant bulb to a pot after a few days with loose soil (cactus type mix) with bottom of the pot touching a pan of water, 5. The bulb will look bone dry with green flower spike coming up, 6. After the flower above to start out, put the pot in a tall glass cylinder to help support the height of the plant with foam or cardboard cut out at the top of the glass cylinder. I bought seven this year below (6), first one was from Home Depot at $7 each but smaller than these at the high-end local nursery at $17 each. These are big over a pound in weight, one tip the scale at 23 oz. So I have 14 total in my collection and curious how last year bulb turns out.

We are quite limited in fungicide selection where I live. Captain is banned, and I don't remember seeing benlate. I used copper octanoate since I read that it was the only thing that could kill this stuff. If it comes back I will try to get some benlate, maybe I can buy it online. I also used cinnamon powder to seal any wounds from where I removed leaves and tunics, since I have had great results with that in the past. Currently I have just a couple bulbs that I did not repot yet that have the fungus, but it appears to no longer be spreading because of the copper spray and drier conditions. I've been keeping these quarantined from the ones I treated already. The bulbs that got the full treatment are recovering and have new growth. There were a couple I gave a hot water bath in addition to removal of infected layers and copper spray. I lost one bulb that rotted severely after a hot water bath. I had to do that because the red blotch had spread to areas in the neck that could not be cut out. All of the roots died and the basal plate was mostly destroyed and soft. I do not recommend that method except perhaps as a last resort. As for Eithea, the bulbs are doing well in the pine bark dust and have new roots, some even have new leaves. The roots have some pink coloration and I am not sure if that is normal, copper-related stain, or return of red blotch. The copper spray causes a burgundy stain that looks very different than stag, and that is what the roots look like they have. I believe that this species prefers indirect light and frequent watering with good drainage. Mine had bloomed previously under those conditions and was forming a dense colony of about 20 small bulbs. It is a beautiful flower, so I am trying hard to save them. If anyone in the future reads this, what I did was: -Dig up the bulb -Remove infected leaves with sterilized scissors (cleaned with hot water and liquid dish soap) -Peel off dead and infected tunics -Spray entire bulb and remaining leaves with copper octanoate -Sprinkle a generous layer of cinnamon powder on cut/exposed areas to seal the wounds -Repot in fresh, dry gritty mix (I use pumice instead of turface) -Wait several hours for the copper spray to dry before watering thoroughly

I also did think of Dermablend, but totally lack the skill to get the texture right. A makeup artist I know in Toronto is marvellous with it. She warms the product in her hand first and depending on the area to be covered, mixes in a bit of moisturizer. But the key is getting the best coverage by "working" the Dermablend. Guess the same thing as making pie crust - the right touch. But I still think that internal/external influences should be ruled out first. Even something as unlikely as a vitamin that you should not be taking.

Hi
Try Avon's Anew Clinical Laser system, a friend of mine used it to remove redness on her chin and cheek area.

This is what MSN style editor writes about the product:
" Hit Your Marks
"Natural," "clean," "undone" Â a few keywords for the most on-trend complexions. And while this calls for a light hand with the concealor and foundation, it also means more diligence in keeping your skin balanced, even-toned, glowing. AvonÂs got a dynamic duo that helps the real you come through proud and clear. The "laser" is actually a roller-ball applicator that precisely targets redness, age spots and blotchiness, and the "post-laser" cream coddles your treated skin and protects from further damage with a goodly dose of SPF. Bare is beautiful."

A makeup artist on another board I frequent has been recommending CoverFX instead of Dermablend. She uses it to cover model's tattoos and claims it blows DB out of the water. There are many shades, so it's best to visit a counter and get a match in person. Good luck.
