what did you choose for bath fan & controls??

Hi - I am overwhelmed with the switching options for the bathroom fans.

Did you come up with a nice solution for your bathrooms?

Ideally, I'd like a fan with

* dimmable light

* delay-off for the blower

I like the Fantech PB110H, but haven't found a good compact solution for the switches/controls. The Panasonic whisper sounds nice too, and I like the fact that it is not plastic. (don't like that yellowed plastic on older fans!)

I put in the Fantech dual fan with halogen lights so they could be dimmed. This is the control for the fan, not compact, but don't really know what that means. I had the Fantech lights for the shower and over the tub put on separate switches, so I have a row of 3 switches, which is fine with me, but maybe not what you want. I didn't put a lot of time or energy into searching for other solutions. I did have them replace the original timer they installed because it didn't have an off switch and if I accidentally turned it on, it ran for the full amount of time.

PS. I LOVE this fan and the halogen lights!!!

I am very happy with the Panasonic Whisper and a separate light, controlled by a dual switch, Lutron Maestro. The switch has a timer for the fan part, and a dimmer for the light - only uses up one "bay". I ordered it from Amazon since I could not find it locally. As for the fan, the Panasonic is much quieter than my other fan.

Hi Jeannie01, our house is progressing slowly, but I'm doing oil rubbed bronze for my door and window hardware. I'd have preferred a tarnished, un-lacquered brass, but was not willing to strip the finish from a houseful of door and window hardware. Most of my bath fittings will be polished nickel, kitchen faucets polished stainless. I'm drawn to shiny faucets and fittings. Light fixtures are almost all vintage with finishes all over the board. As you've probably gathered, I'm not one for the matchy-matchy style. Good luck with your choices.

We had a huge debate about the floors in our house. Over the last 22 years of marriage, we've moved alot. We've had Vinyl, porcelain tile, travertine and wood. Hubby loved the travertine the best and was really pushing for it on the new house. I did like it alot but it was always so cold (physically as well as mentally) I insisted on hardwoods. We had Red Oak in a previous house and Maple. The maple was when our kids were first born. It held up really well with 2 kids and 2 cats over 5 years. This time around our builder gave us the idea of Brazilian Teak. (solid) I researched it, saw some beautiful pictures from other Gardenweb members and I was sold. We've only been in 7 weeks but so far so good. I love the warmth of hardwood and I think the upkeep is pretty easy too. My only regret is not doing the Great Room in hardwood because everyone is telling me I still need a rug to anchor the furniture together in the room. I am not a fan of hardwood on the stairs however unless you put a runner down. We carpeted ours. Good Luck with your decision! Lindy

@Corlett, I did wonder about that. We had a home that had countertops with a 90 handle and it was chipped to point it would put tiny little holes in my shirt when I was at the sink. Def don't want that again. As a matter of fact, I truly want a flat polished edge, but worry that we'll have the same chipping issue. Any suggestions for something that would go well with an eased edge?

Sheer window shades - what did you choose?

We used Hunter Douglas Designer Screen Shades in our house (no window treatments in the kitchen, though! LOL). In some rooms we have the Roman Shade style, but those have been discontinued. In other rooms, we used the roll-up flat screen style. I don't know how the Designer Screen Shades are different from their Roller Shades. Depending on the fabric you choose, they offer varying degrees of sheerness. Also, depending on your windows, these shades can be mounted over or inside the window casings(?). For our Master and Guest Bedrooms, we had HD micro-pleat shades installed behind the Screen Shades (theses are available in privacy and blackout versions, we used blackout). We raise them up completely during the day, while keeping the Screen Shades lowered (unless windows are open, then we raise those as well), and lower them at night. We are very happy with them.

I have the Whisper Warm by Panasonic and love it. I don't know exactly how the electrician did it but the heater switch and the shower light are on the same switch right outside the shower door. The rest of the bathroom switches are next to the door and the exhaust fan part of the Whisper Warm is there on a 30 minute timer switch. 30 minutes is more than enough time for our space. By the way, our vanity light is on a dimmer switch and it's nice to be able to turn it down low for lots of reasons including not waking anyone up in the night.

Our bathroom is pretty small and the Whisper Warm heats it up great but I read reviews where people with high ceilings or large bathrooms were not happy with it so I got one that was for a larger area and am thrilled. We pur our towels under it when entering the shower and when we get out they are so warm. We also put it right above where you step out of the shower and it's really nice! Oh and the switches are 1/2 the size that the used to be so 2 things fit in the space that one used to take.

olychick, does the fantech w/ light give off a good amount of light? if it was just outside of a shower would it sheds some light into the shower?

Steph, it is a small yet bright halogen spot?/flood? and lights up the shower quite well. I wanted it bright in the shower for cleaning really, as my eyes are closed during showering and don't really even need a light for any other purpose. I don't think outside of the shower would have been bright enough for my purposes. But my shower has 3 enclosed sides; if you have one or more glass sides and more light gets into yours from other sources, it might be fine. Or if you are younger, with better eyesight :-)
