I have done days of research about a cream that would get rid of my dark spots. I have traveled to many countries in Central America and have become darkened by the brutal sun. I don't have a problem with getting darker it is the unevenness of my skin tone that is the problem. I originally have caramel skin but because I have been exposed to the sun so much I have dark nearly black large spots on my forehead plus smaller ones on my cheeks from acne. I would also like to turn my knees and elbows the same color as the rest of my body. I have heard a lot about Makari products but am afraid that they don't work for the price, I was also considering Melasma. Please someone recommend something fast acting and works well for black skin. Also please tell me the difference between lightening and whitening creams? Also I have very sensitive skin.

Well I think for your case you should get more water for your skin first, and let it recover by itself, without using any very effictive lightening or whitening creams.

So much sun is certainly not helping you at all. Those darker spots are probably early age spots at extreme. If you have sensitive skin sunscreen may also cause you problems. My sis claims just using aloe vera caused these type spots to lighten which I would try as well as sun screen all the time and stay out of the sun. An MD might recommend (sell you) an Obaji system to lighten your skin but this is a long process which anything else alsos will be. Nothing is going to be fast. Lemon juice is also mentioned as lightening skin. Doing a google search will result in many brand name creams that may or may not work. Ubiquinone 2+ is the highest lightener you can find without a Dr. prescription. Let us know if you find anything that works.

I was e-mailed a full copy of the paper by a reader of this forum. Thank you. The chemicals used were: "To study the effect of melanin biosynthesis inhibitors (MBIs) on D. rosae pathogenicity, the following MBIs: Carpropamid (Bayer CropScience, Monheim, Germany), pyroquilon (Pestanal; Sigma-Aldrich, Seelze, Germany), and tricyclazole (Dow Agro Sciences Ltd., Norfolk, UK) were used as aqueous solutions at concentrations of 100, 250 and 500 ppm in 0.03% non-ionic emulgator NP15 ? 1 ml of acetone." -------------------------------------- Table 1 is titled "Efficacy of prophylactic application of melanin biosynthesis inhibitors of black spot disease of roses on rose leaves compared to trifloxystrobin" A summary of part of that table is: After 14 days, observation of blackspot on Carpropamid treated rose leaves controlled 70.2 Â± 2.4* (n = 13) relative to setting Trifloxystrobin treated leaves at 100 Â± 4.0 (n = 11) and no treatment at 0* (n = 16) --------------------------------------- In a short search I could not find any EPA information concerning Carpropamid.

Over 2% hydroquinone requires a prescription - there are no over-the-counter creams with over 2%. Be very careful to know what you are using - many Chinese and other foreign formulations contain mercury, which is poisonous. I would stick with name-brands from a reputable store. The hydroquinone creams work but you must use them for about 2-3 months religiously, and protect your skin from the sun in the meantime, as it makes your skin more sensitive. You are not supposed to use them continuously. About 3 months at a time is suggested. There are some rat tests out showing a hydroquinone-cancer connection. But the tests were not definitive and have not caused the FDA to pull hydroquinone, and it's been years now. I noticed Estee Lauder has pulled their whitening creams off the shelf for some reason. Shiseido is now using some secret formulation that costs an arm and a leg. You'll see some alternative ingredients like licorice being used. I can't vouch for any of those. But hydroquinone is still the "gold standard" of skin discoloration faders.

I like coconut oil to moisturize lips, skin, hair, stir fry veggies, make curries, and husband uses it to pop popcorn. From what I've read, the problematic fats are the ones which are partially hydrogenated (trans fats) and, according to medical research, cause all kinds of health issues. They were widely used in prepared foods, but the FDA banned them a few years ago and many companies have replaced them with other oils.

Thank you for the thoughts and feedback! I wanted to mention we have well water and a water softener. I just realized I don't have very many all white things in this house. Even our socks that are white have gray usually on the toe and heel. I never knew that about gray in with the whites! I don't know if Restoration Hardware would stand by the shower curtain if it would bleed. I think they would consider it used and could say I didn't follow the washing instructions. However, I just looked and the description reads: 100% cotton Embroidered color on a white background except ivory stitching, which is on an ivory background Deftly stitched color will not shrink, fade or bleed Reinforced buttonhole top with 12 holes Use with our Clear Liner or Hotel Shower Curtain Liner (sold separately) Machine wash Made in Italy etc.etc. It doesn't give info. about water temp. suggestion but I could email them. The shower curtain was recommended to me on the decorating forum (They have one.) so I think I'll ask them about the color they have and how it's held up. I'd definitely wash it separate. That's a good theory about the Persil and gross smell from the clothes. If it cleans as well as it's supposed to it's bound to pull out old oils. Well I'm off to the store today and think I'll grab a small bottle of Persil. They didn't have the 2 in 1 in the small bottle so I'll probably try the original. Wait, is Persil only for whites!? I've read so much laundry stuff now. I think some of the detergents where it says safe for color I read here many of you only use for whites.

I have melasma, and my dermatologist prescribed Tri-luma cream applied 6 nights a week plus a glycolic acid pad on the 7th night. I've been doing this for 4 months and my dark brown splotches have lightened considerably. Also, you must use a sunscreen with an SPF of 25 or 30 that has zinc oxide. Plus avoid direct sunlight as much as possible on the effected areas. Of course, you'd need to see a dermatologist to get a proper diagnosis and treatment

I have problems with patches of darker skin from time to time. My dermatologist prescribed Triluma and it worked very well and faster than the 3-4 months other products require. It costs a lot for a tube (about $100) but I think will last me well over a year. I don't have to use it all of the time. Just when I notice the patches/spots. Then I use it at bedtime for several days or a week or so and they fade and I stop using it unti they reappear. It is one of the best investments I've made. I had the laser treatment for spots and it worked great and lasted for about 2 years or more but it's pretty expensive. The cream is good enough for me.
