Propane - Refills better for environment than exchange

1- Refilling may be done at many service stations, garden/nursery center, etc. This is likely to be closer to your home than an exchange location like blue rhino.

2- Tank exchange is much less environmentally friendly than having your tank refilled. Trucking around a bunch of small blue rhino propane tanks is much less efficient than trucking a big propane refill truck that will fill up your local dealer's big tank, then yours. Think about it - by refilling, you completely eliminate the blue rhino mass refill center too.

3- A tank designed and certified by the government as a 20 lb tank should accept a fill for the full 20 lbs. If you pay for 20 lbs don't get 20 lbs, you are getting ripped off and that company is unscrupulously profiteering out of your wallet. Don't do business with them.

Your typical cylinder (not tank)used with a grill has and OPD valve that only allows the cylinder to be filled to 80% capacity. This allows for expansion and lessens the probability of venting of propane.

You are paying a surcharge for convenience with any of those exchange programs.

I got my own Worthington tank and it actually holds 5 gallons instead of shutting off at 4.x like most do. The local, family owned propane dealership charges a whopping $15 for a 5 gallon fill. The other day when there was still a small amount in the tank and it took 4.2 gallons, it cost me $10.

Any of the exchanges would have been $19.97+ for that.

We've done it both ways with no real problems although when critical planting time comes, we tell them to come EVERY TWO WEEKS AND THEY'D BETTER COME AT 10 DAYS RATHER THAN 15. They got the message, of course we were using a lot of fuel at the time with two 1000 gallon tanks and four full greenhouses plus a 500 gallon at the house. Still, you have to keep a watch on the gauges. We just filled up at the lowest cost in the past 5 years. This year we'll start planting a lot later just to save fuel. We continue to fine tune our operation. You might want to change gas dealers. I don't know where you live but around here [in SW'ern VA] there are several to choose from and we're very rural. Check around for prices too---they'll vary a LOT from dealer to dealer. We found that out when we changed companies. Regards, Tom

Hippy, propane is a liquid inside the tank. Doesn't matter if it's 1lb or 1000lbs, it's always a liquid. The pressure inside the tank, while it is full of liquid, is always the same in every tank as long as they are the same temperature. In the 50 or so degrees in my garage, the vapor pressure in the propane is 78 PSI. Doesn't matter if the tank is 1lb or 1000lbs, if it's 50 degrees, it's 78 PSI. Look up "propane vapor pressure" in google. If anything, I would guess it's getting LESS pressure with the adapter hose, because everything I hook up to it seems to have a slightly decreased output. That makes complete sense, because with any compressed gasses longer hose = less pressure. As for refilling the tanks, that's probably what I will be doing if I don't get the adapter to work. It is most definately safe and not illegal. If it was as dangerous as you make it sound credible companies like Mr. Heater would NOT be selling them to the general public. Of course coleman tries to trick you into thinking they are illegal to refill - they want you to throw it away and buy another! If you refill the tank before it is completely empty the pressure never changes, thus, there are no metal fatigue issues. Sure, they'll wear out eventually, but they will easily last 10 or more fills. Under no circumstances will I continue to pay $2.50 for a QUART of propane.

www.microfibertech.com has different microfiber mop sizes in it's commercial section of its website. I've linked to the 24inch size mop head, but you have to buy the pole separately. http://www.microfibertech.com/24quot-Mop-Kit_p_17.html The household mop on that website is my favorite mop. It is 16' and comes with the pole and the mop head and is more reasonably priced. You probably would have to cut down the dust mop pad a bit. I love using the washable microfiber pads. I use ones that I got from the store that weren't made specifically for their mop. (Orange Glo makes them and so does Bona. Deb: Compare the cost of 1 million btu's of heat. I'll use your average costs. Oil at $2.73/gallon, 80% efficient furnace (your old oil furnace may be less efficient): (1,000,000 / 139,000 btu per gallon) x 2.73 / .8 = $24.55 Propane at $2.57 per gallon, 80% efficient furnace: (1,000,000 / 91,000 btu per gallon) x 2.57 / .8 = $35.30 Propane, 95% efficient furnace = $29.72 Heat pump w/electricity at $.15 per kw-hr delivered, C.O.P. = 3.25 at 35F ambient: (1,000,000 / 3414 btu per kw-hr) x .15 / 3.25 = $13.51 Straight electric resistance heat: = $13.51 x 3.25 = $43.90 The heat pump produces the same 1 million btu's of heat at more than half the cost of the 95% efficient propane furnace, and almost half the cost of the 80% oil furnace. Note that the cost of a heat pump defrost cycle is not included in the above calculation. As ambient temps increase from the 35F example, the C.O.P. increases, and the heat pump is even cheaper to run. The C.O.P. was taken from my 3-ton 14 SEER / 9 HSPF Goodman heat pump at 35F ambient. The heat pump needs auxiliary heat for when the ambient temps fall below the balance point of the home. That aux heat can be a propane furnace, oil furnace, or resistance electric strips. there are a few misconceptions about the propane business. Not only did Blue Rhino drop the level of propane in their tanks, but they were the last ones to do so. Amerigas, and other regional tank exchange companies did so first. Consumers have been continually blaming Blue Rhino for the price of the exchange. Blue Rhino does not set the price. The proprieter at each location sets the price. That is why if you shop around town you will find a cheaper price for Blue Rhino tank exchange. Blue Rhino has dropped their price to our customers. The customer has not dropped the price to the consumer. Blue Rhino is training their customers to not accept tanks that have been serviced at other locations for even exchange because the valve no longer working. If the tank leaks around the valve connection, use plumbers tape to help seal the connection. It is a brass valve and it has a tendency to contract and expand due to temperatures.

20 LB tanks can not be filled to a 20 LB capacity. They are not permitted to be filled over 80% capacity for the reasons mentioned above (expansion and contraction).

If you get a fill station that puts more than 80% in they are definitely risking their licenses.

Simple solution - don't prepay when you get your tanks filled. Pay for what they put in, which will never be 20 lbs.
