Super hot gas grill?

Hi I need a new grill. I use my current grill for BBQ but also for coffee roasting and pizza. For the latter two applications I need hot grill, particularly for the pizza which is best at 950F or thereabouts. So far all I have found that will get super hot is the Fire Magic brand of grills which advertise temps to 1200F. But they are very expensive. Any other ideas? I also looked into these high-BTU grills made by Lowes but they sound like they have major quality issues. Some of the infrared grills also get hot but I don't know if the enclosures are meant to be run so hot - for example the Solaire instructions say you must not close the grill top if you are running it at more than half power. I don't want to close the thing to get hot and then have it melt down on me!

My sear grill says to keep the top up, but it grills at 1600 degrees.

I would look for a gas grill with regular burners plus a sear zone. Those should get very hot with the ability to close the lid.

You might want to look at the Big Green Egg. It doesn't get quite as hot as you're saying, but lots of people use it to bake pizzas. You might want to do a search on google and read some about it. It's a lump charcoal grill. People say it taste like you cooked your pizza in a wood fired oven. It's a big ceramic egg shaped grill. It holds temps very well. I bought one a few weeks ago, and I love it, but I haven't done a pizza on it yet. There is a big green egg forum if you do the google search it'll probably come up.

Green man I agree with the chocolate habanero. I absolutely love them. They are one of my favorites for taste. Very fruity and not too hot. Seysonn it's good to hear from you. I remember when I first joined gardenweb you were one of my frequent people to follow up. I learned a lot from you and DMForcier. Scorpion john I didn't know they had a Trinidad Douglah. I grew the 7pot Douglah and I think that is one of the varieties I havnt eaten yet Bc I'm afraid to bite into it. I will look for those seeds. I got my little brother into hot peppers so I want to help him grow a bunh of cool varieties

I've been grilling BF the past couple of days on his views about getting a grill. He says, "We don't need one, we won't use it." But I know he has been eyeing that little Weber one whenever we go to K-mart or the hardware store. I like the little front tray part on the marine one Tricia posted. I think the cheif plus for us about having a gas grill would be ease of use and the chance to have some outdoor cooking space to supplement our tiny kitchen. My stove area is claustrophobic to say the least. It would give BF a chance to cook without having me in the way making the salad or whatnot. As it is, cooking together is a study in patience in my "one butt" kitchen. We dream of having our own place someday, with room for a big garden too. I've had some rounds of illness that have made it hard just to keep up with what I have here. BF is my rock, G-d bless him! BF has a covered back patio at his house just off the kitchen back door so he can grill year round and he definately has used it as a kitchen extension since his kitchen is almost as small as mine, albeit maybe a little bit better laid out. I don't see us grilling in the winter when the patio is full of snow. We'll not be covering our tiny patio for a good long while, if ever. I do have an extra patio umbrella though, so maybe I could leave it set up over the grill in the winter, lol! BTW, anyone who doubts the benefits of vegetation for combating the heat island effect should hang out in my yard. It is probably 10 degrees cooler out there than it used to be when I just had a big ol' wooden deck on the back of my house. I never went out there in the summer, it was hot and I felt like I was on display for the whole row/neighborhood.

2Many, I was thinking about how to use the 12" tube for shorter smokes. First thought was to loosely crumple some aluminum foil and stuff in as a space filler and then add pellets to fill. (Except getting foil out would be a bit of a pain.). Thinking that a partial loose fill might cause the pellets to burn too fast? After I ended up with that huge 40# bag of pellets decided not to worry about it; I'll just fill it up and let 'er burn out past the time I remove the food. With pricier pellets, yeh, I'd try conserving the fuel. Course this then strengthens the argument for adding a 6" tube...for shorter smokes and adding part way thru longer smokes. Then again, I was pondering last night why something like a tomato paste can or two with a bunch of holes punched in it wouldn't work... (from a brand with a removable paper label.) Pulled a couple of chicken halves out of the freezer last night. Going to brine overnight and smoke 'em tomorrow. Thinking I'll try to confine the smoke a bit better with the chicken going on what you learned with your bird. I bought the chicken already halved (was in the reduced 'Use today or freeze' bin--perfect, I thought for experiments!) so the halves may be a little more receptive to smoke than a whole bird? Also, more prone to drying out but brining ought to help offset that... This is actually kinda' fun to do. Needed that cause I get burned out on cooking!

1600 degrees? That's serious heat. I have a Members Mark that I just rebuilt. I took the regulator off and changed it out for an adjustable high output one. This thing sounds like a grill on steroids.... It hit 600 degrees in a short time but was difficult to control or get the heat back down without turning off 2 burners.I'm going be changing the regulator back to the "stock" one.

I ended up getting a Fire Magic grill, ridiculous rip-off price but it does get hot. I found I had to plug part of the vent in the top to get it really hot, with that plugged I can hit 1000F. Thats about all you need for pizza..

some aluminum alloys have a melting point as low as 950 deg F. The aluminum grill firebox will not get quite as hot as the actual grilling surface, but still... you wont get much over 1000 before having problems with the aluminum softening and collapsing.

Not if you get a Fire Magic -- the factory techs told me there were no problems with getting the grill to 1000F, it was built to take it. I am pretty sure the firebox is stainless steel on it. I do think that most of the grills made today will not work very long at these higher temps.
