Half slab of granite needed for bathroom vanity!

Hi! We're remodeling our master bathroom and decided to use granite for the vanity countertop. Most of the granite yards we've gone to in Anaheim (along St. College) only sell whole slabs. Does anyone know of a granite yard that sells half slabs? The dimensions pose a problem as most slabs we find are 9-10 feet long and we need 10 ft. 6 in. x 22 in. We're trying hard to stay away from seaming two smaller pieces together if we can help it. Specifically, we're looking for a granite remnant or 1/2 slab in Kashmir White, Bianco Romano, Bianco Antiquo, or something similar. We already have a fabricator and installer----We just can't find the granite! Is there anyone out there that can help us? Thanks!

10' is generally the longest length that slabs come in. Only a very few colors are available longer, and only a very few fabricators carry the longer slabs. They command a hefty premium too.

Modify your vanity instead. That's an overpowering runway of a vanity! Break it up with maybe a linen cabinet between the two bowls, or a different height section for applying makeup. It will create more visual interest, detract from the dragstrip look, and be MUCH cheaper on your pocketbook.

I agree, I don't think you will find a 10 and 1/2 foot piece. We have a 96" vanity and got a piece of prefab granite that was 26x108, our only other option was to purchase a full slab and that was just too expensive

Marble: To me, a softer and warmer looking and nicer material. More easily scratched and etched. More easily stained. Limited colors, so it might be more appropriate for certain decor or period looks. More maintenance if you want to keep it pristine looking. Granite: A little colder to the eye, to me it's more sterile looking. Harder and less porous, so less likely to scratch or stain or etch. Numerous colors, veining options, and varying amounts of "visual business" in the differing slabs, so it could be considered more versatile in terms of fitting in to differing types of decor. My experiences with the materials make me see them in certain ways. So my list of what is "good and bad" may not be the same as someone else's. A few simple examples: If you have a cleaning person, are you all that concerned with the ease or difficulty of maintaining a slab since you'll never tough a scrubby? If you have a teenager who is into having a different hair color each week, that may sway your choice. Adult bathroom versus a kids bathroom, etc. Honed versus polished in terms of reflected light, with polished showing every smear, smudge, and fingerprint. But honed can be more prone to stains. A husband who cleans up after himself versus one who leaves a ring of shaving cream and whiskers around the sink and splashes of alcohol-laden aftershave all over the countertop. Oh, the humanity!

Would it be bad to use something like this, even though it is an older style? I am a huge sucker for black and white anything. I don't want to spend a lot of money (not that this is a lot of money at $5.75/square foot at home depot) and then still have the room look like it has the original tile, in case we sell. I like this too, for the same reasons...this is more expensive though, at $15.39/SF (for sale here: http://www.fastfloors.com/catalog/productline.asp?wid=FG8N2D2&productlineid=17937&productid=126165: I also like this, but I'm suspicious of the price ($5.48 for 11.25x11.25). Is the quality bad? this is at home depot. Would marble be better? Or granite? I have no idea what to do.

Cheap remnants or prefab that will work is how I would go. I would also see if the granite fab shop will do the sink cut out for cheap if it is needed. For prefab, it will already have the sink cut out for standard oval sinks.

Millworkman, I think I must have read somewhere that you shouldn't use granite on MDF cabinets Patricia Colwell Consulting, the vanity does not come with a top. It was just shown with a top. The Hayneedle website description said it was just the cabinet and it is just the cabinet (arrived this past Friday). Siamesey, I hear ya but since I spent a ton of money converting the tub to shower, I have to save where I can. Unfortunately, when you combine the needs of my mother (the main user of this bathroom), the style that I would like, along with the need to work around the plumbing location, I actually don't have a lot of choices. It's been really hard to combine the first two of those and find a vanity with drawers on the left hand side (the plumbing dictate). I looked at custom made and even semi custom made and no, I can't do that. Even though the vanity is made of MDF and is RTA, to me it has better quality than some of low end all wood vanities that I've seen. Also, most of the cabinets I've looked at still seem to have MDF in them somewhere, especially white cabinets which is what I wanted for this bathroom.

We needed a parcial slab for our kitchen island, and the fabricator was able to find a piece from another fabricator called "excess inventory". I'm sure there are pieces of odd sized inventory at most granite yards, or at fabricators. Just takes some effort to find them. We saved $30/sq ft by doing this.

Hi Cojo,

I live in the LA area and am also looking for the same type of granite for a much smaller vanity top than yours. I have faced the same problem with finding a remnant. I was able to find a large slab of Kashmir White for my kitchen at Marmol Exports USA, the slab was 131x81. Since they only sell whole slabs, maybe we can help each other out, :o) Send me a private message if this is something you might be interested in.

Thanks for all your replies--your ideas have been very helpful! @GreenDesigns, I could see how you would think our design might look like a runway. (great analogy BTW!) In trying to keep things brief, I failed to mention that we plan to place a tall cabinet on top of the granite at either end of the vanity and possibly a shorter one in the middle. Thanks for your great input!
After many hrs. of research on-line, I was able to locate a couple of granite yards in Anaheim that will sell 1/2 slabs. We will be checking them out soon and have also been checking tile and granite stores for remnants or excess inventory that meet our minimum specs of 126" x 24". I have also contacted @rem1970 as maybe we can help each other out if the price is right!
