Shower size and bench

If you want a sit down bench in the shower, what size do you think the shower should be? They roughed in the shower today and it looks too small for a bench. It's about 3 x 4. Is your shower rectangle or square with a bench or corner seat? How wide and deep is your corner seat or bench?

Is the shower floor area 3'x4' and then the bench is another 12"? Will it be tile walls?

The space of our shower pan is 3x4 finished (so 38x50 rough) with a 36x16 bench at the back. It feels TREMENDOUS but that could just be relative to the crappy shower we had before and that we are using right now.

Sounds like you are potentially inviting a leaky shower by penetrating the barrier if you do that. Even with an originally-built bench, there are mixed feelings about potential long-term issues due to standing water sitting on the bench. You'll probably get a lot of votes on here for a nice teak bench in the shower. That's what I'd do.

Supposedly not if its just oiled. The squeegee is suctioned on and has only fallen down twice and needed to be resuctioned in 1.5 years.

I suggest you go to the store and look at the two pieces together. Since the legs on the table are slanted the bench may or may not fit under the legs properly. As for the general length, a bench of that size might look visually ok when the leaf is not in the table but it will look too small when you are using the leaf. I have a bench at my table and measured it for reference. My table is 82 inches long and my bench is 70 inches long. Between my table legs is 71.5 inches.

The darker bench top is desirable for those of us who are nearsighted or have cataracts. The contrast let’s us see exactly what is bench and what is shower wall or floor. In a place where people won’t be wearing their glasses, where heat and turning around can cause disorientation, it is always better to have contrast in the environment. These all-the-same-marble showers can be dangerous places for elders and people with bad eyesight. I can’t get back to your post right now to see if you have a curb. If you do, the top of the curb should be the gray from the countertop, too. A solid top is best for a curb, and the contrast, again, helps.

We're still just in the framing stage so this is all I have:

We also have the sloped ceiling in there (the real reason for the built in bench - to keep DH from hitting his head) so it's a little strange.

Thanks for the photos...I draw all of this stuff out on paper and one minute it seems like enough room, then I panic that it isn't. I think you have plenty of room. When I saw the photo, I thought the bench was perfect since the ceiling is sloped then I read your caption! It's a great use of space and, in a shower you need more arm room than leg room anyway. How wide is your doorway (finished) to the shower?

Also I remember you got your floor pan from showerbase2.com...we may do the same. Also, if you don't mind, if I recall your toliet is to the right of the shower by/under the window? What is the size of that space and specifially, the size of your pocket door? We'd like a couple of pocket doors and are not sure what space allowances we need.

The doorway to the shower is going to be around 30" finished give or take. Originally the pocket door was also going to be 30" but then we found a huge vent stack in the corner that I had to accommodate and things got shifted.

I wanted a decent sized bench for my decent sized butt so we decided to take a few inches out of the toilet stall instead. We happen to have a small bathroom downstairs that is a few inches smaller than what I have planned up there so we know it will work without being uncomfortable (and it's plenty wide).

I was originally going to put a niche on the side wall but decided to put it on the back wall instead so we could bury the stack.

Here is an older version of the floor plan. The basic stuff has pretty much stayed the same but some walls have shifted slightly (due to existing conditions and joists falling in inconvenient places) but I don't have a pretty plan that shows it. The tub is now a double ended tub and the box behind the door that was the old radiator is being replaced by a combo radiator/towel warmer from myson. The toilet stall is about 3' wide by 4'9" long here, it's down to more like 4'6" in reality. The shower is 3' x 5'6 overall (a little smaller in reality now too with a few inches taken out of the bench).
