Source for different woods to use for smoking

Hey all

We have really gotten interested in smoking instead of the standard weekend grill fest. Not that there is anything wrong with grilling, we just like the smoke optin on occassion.

Anyway, what is a good source for different types of wood to use for smoking? I have Mesquite chips, but I would love to try some pecan, apple and other fruit woods depending on the meat (or fish) we are smoking.

What is your favorite place to buy wood?

Hi Alexa! We like to smoke with apple wood here. Any of the fruit woods are wonderful. Wish I could say I have a source but I don't. I live in orchard country and we got a whole pickup load from one of the orchards. If you know of any, give them a call to see if they have any from trimming trees. I'll keep my eyes open when I stop at any of the farm markets.

My local Kroger grocery sell Mesquite, Hickory, Apple, and Pear chips. They are located with the charcoal.

THANK YOU Brandon for an answer to the pruning question!!!! Will be sure to keep the cuts above ground level!! And to clarify what you and Ken are saying about a view to the utility boxes- ...actually, forget it... I just typed out a huge long explanation that I just deleted...lol ...in short (or @ least shortER) with the height of our deck and where our seating is located, the size of the smokebush, and my intentions (clearly understood at least in my own head- haha) don't worry guys, I'll be fine. I always envisioned a multi-stemmed tree, which would still hide the view of the utility boxes. ...don't think I will end up trying to do tree-form after all but do plan on pruning off many shoots and thin the boy down! as always, i appreciate the input from you all :)

Is seasoned firewood related to seasoned BBQ/Smoking wood?

You did recognize my question and addressed my concern as to when does wood loose its value as firewood and BBQ/Smoking wood. I have tried to pay attention and rotate my wood and burn the oldest first. With a harvest of 3 of 4 cords green last winter, that put me in good shape. In the past at my grandparent's they had the choice to cut standing wood timing it to their need vs me finding wood that is cut or dead and need cutting as I am notified of I spot it. Last, A Twist To BBQing! The best BBQ in town is flavored with green Hickory as soon as it hits the ground from Oklahoma. Gas is used for heating in large insulated custom built rotisserie oven/grills and a small amount of green hickory is used with rubs for flavoring. Also a friend was advised to burned seasoned oak for heat at his business vs expensive cords of seasoned hickory and add a small piece of green hickory the last 30-45 minutes of the cooking. I have tried their method using their personal small piece of hickory and rub with no luck compared to their quality. My best flavor and quality comes from mixing seasoned pecan (2 small sticks) and mesquite (1 small stick) on charcoals (6 lbs) to get even heat and their rub. loger

Roper, I saw a setup for a cheap smoker (haven't tried it yet). You take an opened tin can (with the lid still attached)and punch a hole in the side near the bottom. Slide in a cheap soldering iron, cover with wood chips and close the lid to (to stop air getting in?). This goes in a big clay planter pot (with the cord for the iron coming through the bottom hole. A little late, but all I've ever used is Mesquite, Hickory and Apple. Found those in the local grocery, prior to Wegmans, which I think carries cherry, too.

This site sells a lot of different kinds - about $5 for 2 pounds, doesn't sound bad, but I didn't check the shipping. I know nothing about the site, either, but they sure seem to have everything.

Save your corn cobs from your sweet corn.

I cure and smoke bacon, and this winter I'm going to try cob smoking. I frequently use cobs with fish on the grill. Imparts a very nice taste without being overpowering.

That barbecuewood.com is a very good source. I've bought from them in the past.

P.S., try the pecan with chickens... It rocks!

I have a question about the cob smoking. We have corn on the cob at least once a week, but I usually trash the cobs. Do you dry them or use them wet? And is the flavor of the smoke compatible with most meats, fish and fowl?

This intrigues me!
