I have cooked on all three and the TEK IR is the only gas grill that cooks as well as charcoal. It's advantages over charcoal are that it is quick to set up, easy to clean up and does an excellent job of creating the charcoal taste. As many here know, the flavor is created by the smoke from the fat striking the hot surface be it charcoal or something else. The higher the IR energy (from gas or charcoal) and the less the flame, the more smoke generated rather than being turned into additional flame. The TEK creates a great deal of smoke because the IR glass sits between the flame and the dripping grease. On older style IR burners there is still an open flame to ignite the grease drippings reducing the amount of smoke to add flavor. With charcoal, once the embers are glowing red, it is emitting a lot of IR and much less to no flame and hence produces a lot of smoke and flavor. I have owned the FireMagic and I would not purchase another. The burners are cast SS but they still do rust over time and the flavor grills wear out too. They are very hard to clean and the heat was not anywhere near as good as the advertisements. If you are the type that never clean a grill and don't mind a gritty looking grill it may not matter. I am the type that wants it to look clean and inviting each time and the self cleaning feature along with the dishwasher removal panels makes the TEK a breeze to clean and keep looking nice. For me that was worth a lot. The more conventional grills like the Firemagic, even with their ceramic infrared burner are not even a close match.

Some sources offered to me the possibility that the Viking trim kit would fit the essentially identical Jenn Air units but I didn't pursue it nor can I confirm it. Electrolux Icon CD shows an optional collar and louver kit in their specs but I haven't seen it displayed. If your main goal is to minimize protrusion, then any refrigerator could be made to appear more flush with either a recessed space behind to allow it to push back further, and/or extended side panels to camoflauge the exposed sides.Trimming out the top gap to fit tighter helps but air flow clearance should still be maintained per spec. Gasket and door still need to be exposed for doorswing clearance. I preferred the look of the Viking so I went with it. I'm hopeful that since it is really the ubiquitous Amana/Whirlpool/Jenn Air CD with a different skin and handle that I had a good chance of reliability and its ratings are of course similar to it's sibling units. It has performed very well.

Have 36" Wolf with grill and 600CFM VH. 1. Would not sacrifice grill for 2 more burners at all. Like the grill way too much. 2. Blanket hood CFM recommendations are pretty much useless--much depends on hood size, configuration, duct run, brand and how surrounding area (kitchen size, cabinets, walls etc.) direct airflow. Ours works well; fish is probably the mildest offender in terms of smoke and odor. If it's a wall mount and flanked by cabinets in a typical NYC galley kitchen that should enhance its efficiency. I'm assuming you'll be externally venting: Given that different apartments can have different ducting connections I'd find out what those are first (e.g., shared stack, max ducting size, etc.) These can make a hood either more or less effective as they determine what the hood has to push against to exhaust ("static pressure" in the trade). Once you find that out try calling the hood manufacturers' customer service lines and see if you can talk with a tech rep. If you can externally exhaust and the kitchen space you'll be amazed at how much cooler the kitchen stays, especially when you're using the oven. Those small kitchens get really hot even with a window open. My $.02 worth.

I am not sure if I can help you as I do not have a Viking. I just purchased that all clad grille at Williams Sonoma and it works fine on my Miele 36' gas cooktop. Just thought this may help!
