Even though I think Cherokee Green is the best tasting green when ripe I've grown, and I've grown lots of the green when ripes, I can't help you b'c I'm sending ALL the seed I have, several hundred seeds, to a commercial place that wants to offer it in probably 2010. They'll do seed production next summer.

And this meant deleting Cherokee Green from my SSE YEarbook offerings, but it also means making this variety available to even more folks.

There are quite a few commercial places that already offer Cherokee Green seed, but the seed manager at this place wanted them to offer it as well.

Carolyn, who is a strong supporter of folks buying at least some of their seed from the small family run places that preserve and distribute seeds of OP tomato varieties, especially in the current economic climate.

No, they aren't the same variety. Emerald Evergreen, aka Evergreen, has long been known and was listed by the Gleckler Seed Co perhaps as far back as the 60-70's. I've grown it and many more green when ripes as well.

Cherokee Green was a spontaneous mutation of Cherokee Chocolate that Craig LeHoullier found when supposedly CC seeds were sent back to him by Darrel Merrell.

Cherokee Green is a beefsteak variety in maybe the 8-12 oz range, sometimes a bit more sometimes a bit less. And that's about the same size as Cherokee Purple, give or take.

I don't think they taste the same at all and consider CG to be the far better variety IMO.

Its' been offered for several years by both Sandhill Preservation as well as Victory Seeds.

And TONS of folks list it in the SSE Yearbooks for SSE members only, not the general public SSE catalog.

As a follow up, does anyone have a good source of Cherokee Green seeds? The ones that I bought were from a reputable retail seed seller, but I want to try from somewhere else.

Sorry, looking for sources OTHER than the ones listed...saw that Tomatofest has them, but I don't need $15 worth of seeds this year. Just want to make sure I have a good chance of getting the right seeds.

Anthony, please tell me again how the shape of your CG was different from what you expected as in not even close as you said? I don't see a huge problem with your CG's looking like Evergreen or any of the small beefsteak green when ripes that I've grown.

I ask b'c taste is individual and perceptual and what I might experience you might not so I don't see that as a criterion for saying a variety is wrong either.

Before saying that either Sandhill or Victory don't have the right CG I think I might look a bit further, as in, did all the fruits have the ****typical coloration one expects with a green when ripe?**** I think that's most important to start with, taste and fruit shape being influenced by many factors.

If it were me I think I'd reassess the situation re the two traits you spoke to before suggesting that either Sandhill ot Victory are selling the wrong CG/ Actually you're the first person I've seen to even suggest that.

So did the fruits have the typical coloration of a green when ripe b/c that really is most important? Fruit shape and taste can have so many variables that I wouldn't use them to say what you had was wrong.

That's what the Victory Seed package said it was.
Never grown it from Sandhill Preservation.

Looked like a typical green when ripe, but shape/colour/internal structure did not match what Bill shows above. Beefsteaks were slightly more fluted and flatter, less consistent in shape (than my CP or C Chocolates, which were shaped and had internal structure like Bill's pics). I understand that shape can vary depending so this might not really tell us anything, but not one tomato on the 2 plants had the same shape as my CP's, CC's, or Bill's pic, but were consistent with the flatter, slightly more fluted, and inconsistent shapes of the evergreens that I have grown before. Internal structure included much larger seed cells/less meat.

Skin was more yellowish-green than Bill's pic, though the pics I saw of both fruits on tomatofest looked about the same colour. Bill's pics above look like the Green Giants that I have grown (in terms of colour), but definitely don't look like the Cherokee Green's that I had (from Victory Seeds). I grew (emerald) evergreen twice before, taste was consistent both times, and was the same as the Cherokee Green that I grew this year. Actually, the first thing that I said when I tasted them was 'I am surprised that Carolyn rated this as better than other greens, this tastes exactly like emerald evergreen'. Did not taste like GG, I could easily tell them apart. Anyway, no harm trying a different source for next year.

Yes, I personally think that Cherokee Green is better than any other green when ripe that I've grown and that includes Green Giant and ARGG and Evergreen and Dorothy's Green and Grandma Oliver and Charlie's Green and on and on for maybe 10-12 different ones grown to date. Oh, that includes Humph and Malakhitovaya Shkatulka as well. ( smile)

One exception to the above is that I think the new cherry Green Doctors also has a place near the top.

Mmmmm, those look yummy. I think prior to growing CG I wouldn't
have found those pictures appealing, BUT after growing CG, YUM!
CG makes GWR toms very appealing!

CG is very much worth a spot in anyone's garden.

I'm sorry I didn't take any pictures of Green Giant, which I grew this past summer, also from Victory Seeds,
but I would describe them as potato-leaf vine with 50 - 100% larger on average than the Cherokee Green fruit,
about the same sweetness but a little bit less zingy and more fruity.

Problem I had with Green Giant is the ONLY indication they give you of readiness to pick is feel, and they bruise
so easily, that once you "feel" their ripeness, you'd better take them directly inside and eat them within 12 hours.

The ones I left on the vine to full ripe consistently began decomposing while on the counter for more
than a few hours. First, little round indentation began appearing in the skin which soon began spreading into the flesh
as large, soft, grey spots. Green Giant is NOT a mark tomato, which is too bad, because when eaten at the peak of flavor,
they are as good in their own right as Cherokee Green.

Unfortunately, over half the Green Giants I grew ended up rotting on the vine because I just didn't discover them
soon enough. But I did succeed in crossing Green Giant with Yellow Submarine this summer, so who knows what might evolve
from that. Other attempted crosses of Green Giant with larger tomatoes failed to take this time around, though.

For someone who likes green-when-ripe tomatoes, I'd suggest they grow Cherokee Green as first choice and
Green Giant as second choice, but be prepared to prune away excess foliage so you can find and pick the fruit when ready.
Another great one is Lime Green Salad, which is a dwarf suitable for 5-gallon containers, and makes cute little salad tomatoes
with quite a zesty zip ...

And obviously I was not questioning your tastes, I was just thinking 'these CG's taste exactly like my EE's, no better and no different', but at that time I failed to consider the possibility that they might not be the right variety (which is obviously not established and would be very difficult to establish, but if I try another source next year I might be able to get a good idea). I see that Victory does not appear to carry evergreen so probably not a seed mixup, probably just a result of the horrible weather that we had last summer. We will see...

Bill I agree re. sweet and fruity taste of GG's compared to most others, and also a big pain in the but in terms of how delicate they are/how easily they rot, and how they sneak up on ripeness without much of a colour change, but they sure are tasty.

Bill, I'm glad to hear you say that GG is soft, bruises easily and tends toward rotting with a short shelf life, if you will.

And I find exactly the same thing with Aunt Ruby's German Green.

I had forgotten that I also grew Aunt Ruby's in 2006 along with Cherokee Green. Same garden. Aunt Ruby's tasted very good to me, but not as good as Cherokee Green, and Aunt Ruby's produced far less fruit and the vine went down while Cherokee Green kept pumping them out.

I found Cherokee green very prolific as well.

I was pleased as punch with them all around really - they're
pretty, they're delicious, they're prolific... what else
could you want in a tomato?

I found Ananas Noire like that with regard to rotting on the
vine and going down hill extraordinarily fast. But we ate
them up just the same. Partially it was my fault - I didn't
know when to pick!!! AN was not prolific.

thanks for the recommendations, I will give one of them a try. Now that I think back I recall that one other plant from this packet was not a green at all, but a single mixed up seed could happen to anyone/any retailer at any time. Actually, 2 of my most delicious tomatoes have been mixed up seeds from a packet of black krims that I got a few years back...one a super sweet round red/pink that produces early and late, the other a prolific plant with bunches of smaller tomatoes (very slightly oblong) with a brownish skin and a rich tasting purplish interior. Red Krim and Brown Krim until otherwise identified.
